  1. And that's the exact reason I don't care for this being built I wish something better would be there... Like what? A Starbucks?
  2. The continued growth of the Flats East Bank project is going to drive some type of change to the Shoreway connection also.

C'mon people, if you want to post an article criticizing Kasich, please post a link to something a little more credible, it's not hard. That article was poorly researched & poorly written. The tidbit of facts that it offers, someone from Kasich's inner circle asked some other guy to step aside, happens all the time in politics and is really not newsworthy. Hello, Cuyahoga Corruption scandal, anyone? How many times did Russo get a sham opponent to run against him in primary races, only to drop out right at the last minute? Saying the FBI is "looking into it" is like saying the sun will rise tomorrow. Please post something when charges are filed against Kasich or his allies. Classic tipoff about some obscure contributions to Mandel & Renacci's campaigns but no mention of who donated to their opponents' campaigns. As much as I appreciate how the internet allows off-topic news stories to be circulated, it shouldn't sacrifice established journalism standards like unbiased reporting or covering both sides of a story.

Highway maintenance like snow plowing & pot hole patching & such should absolutely be privatized. They already went this route with mowing.
  5. I already noted up thread that the developer is the Ferchill group, I've worked with them before and they are no slum landlord, nor are they amateurs in anyway. I know what it takes to apply for LIHTC's and historic tax credits and Ferchill has plenty of accountants and architects and other experienced professionals who can handle it. I never made a comment about the project being owned or managed by a slum landlord, but just that it was disappointing the entire site was going back as low income housing after the renovation.
  6. It's a very rare slum landlord who will invest millions of dollars and navigate the expensive/time consuming/difficult LIHTC and Historic Preservation Tax Credit programs to renovate a building. It's free money from the government in the form of tax credits so spending a little money upfront to get the credits means the project will be a cash cow for at least another 15 yrs as low income rentals. And using Pella windows doesn't mean jack squat either. The Italian restaurant on the corner hasn't been vacant that long, maybe a year & half. It was on the market for sale prior to that but was open & active up until 3 yrs ago. I'm sure the owner got zero interest considering it's surrounded by low income apartments. It's too bad, a friend of mine used to be chef there. There was actually a planning study done to narrow Detroit down in that very area to make it easier for pedestrians to cross. I think it was posted somewhere on the City planning website under neighborhood plans...
  7. I can't believe the City actually filed a notice of violation for interior/exterior maintenance... what a novel idea. the project manager said the interiors were the worst living conditions he's ever seen and should've been torn down completely. He said the conditions were much worse than the CMHA Garden Valley Kinsman or Valley View Tremont projects which were torn down. And this is how the city lets a "historic landmark" development be maintained...
  8. General contractor is Marous Brothers Construction, I believe the developer is Ferchill Group. I know it's staying low income apartments because it's being funded with LIHTC's. Too bad it's all staying low income, that area could really use an infusion of quality market rate apartments
  9. I was at a party in Rocky River last weekend & Sam McNulty showed up on his bicycle
  10. Say what? You have a link to an official document or website to back that up? There is no requirement other than being poor to get public housing or foodstamps. And once you're qualified for the program, the only requirement is that you stay poor. Able bodied, sound mind, no difference

  12. On a very slightly related fringe theory, could Obama perhaps benefit if the Supreme Court were to rule Obamacare unconstitutional? The WSJ piece I linked mentioned that Obamacare was a major roadblock to business hiring due to uncertainty and increased regulation. By that token, if it were rejected, the business sectors should resume hiring and Obama could claim credit for his other policies finally taking hold thus driving down the unemployment rate...
  13. This is a great thread, agree with the comments about the research becoming a book someday. Interesting also is the historic events and external influences that affected the development, like the war's cost on materials, labor shortages, etc. Detroit's people mover is barely a step above a carnival ride. I lived/worked in downtown Detroit and could watch that thing roll by totally empty for hours a day. I think it's a 12 minute walk between any two farthest points on the loop. Add up the cost to acquire land for the track locations & stops(even if elevated), the cars, the initial construction and ongoing maintenance and you could have given lifetime bus passes to a good number of Detroiters....
  14. it was sent out at the top of their weekly newsletter, I'd say that's a pretty decent job of promoting
  15. This is a fun update from DSCDO Detroit Shoreway luring retailers by offering free rent for top plans The Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization (DSCDO) recently got some ink in Crain's Cleveland Business for its recently launched business plan competition. The competition offers free rent in increments of three months, six months and a year to the winners, who will fill vacant storefronts in the Gordon Square Arts District. "When people go shopping, they are looking to stop at more than one or two stores," Jeff Ramsey, executive director of DSCDO, told Crain's. "They want a selection of stores to visit. We're trying to expand the mix of businesses here." For more information on the business plan competition, contact Nick Fedor, Director of Marketing and Economic Development, at [email protected] or 216/961-4242.
  16. ^very true. At this point, I think the 2013 economy is looking tough for whomever wins. I don't normally like to link opinion pieces, but this one has some interesting arguments (all debatable of course) on why the recession is lingering and recovery has been so weak thus far. It's definitely a criticism of the Obama administration and it's policies, but some of the points about low interest rates penalizing savings seems to be true. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304019404577418311631098508.html?mod=opinion_newsreel
  17. Tigers are slumping. How many plays did the Indians beat out running to first base last night? 3 or 4? Indians outhustled them. Johnny Damon looked unbelievably slow trying to swing the bat. After he struck out the 2nd time, I said in unison with the stranger beside me "I could have taken a better cut than that". Need Sizemore back in the lineup
  18. it's an interesting thought but i don't think it's really a likely outcome. The quality of design & materials & maintenance that went in to Crocker Park & Legacy Village is so much higher than Parmatown or Midway Mall in Elyria. There's also a mixed use component built into Crocker Park which was never part of the other projects.
  19. I was at the game last night - Perez got huge cheers when he came into the game to close
  20. What's everyone's thoughts on Linkedin? I just created a profile, added like 100 connections from undergrad, grad school, previous jobs, current connections, etc. So now what? What do other people use it for besides keeping in touch?

how about the protestors who showed up with sticks & bats to pummel the police this year? Idiots. What a huge drag on the Chicago economy too - all the overtime for local & state police, all the lost business revenue from people who stayed home, avoided the city, the businesses that had to board up windows prematurely or close during the protests...
  22. Article says "mixed income" rentals. 18 units, I think 14 are low income, who wants to be the 4 market rate guinea pigs?
  23. Massimo's at the corner of Detroit & 25th has a nice party room and does very nice dinners. Close to downtown also for hotels & such.

Can anyone explain what the purpose of the protests are and why the anti-Nato sentiment?

Re-reading "Armchair Economist". Very easy read, actually entertaining. Funny stuff about how a group of lab rats & pigeons were taught the value of "work" and wages to perform tasks for a reward of food or rootbeer. Another instance of how car accidents actually increased after seatbelts became mandatory along with padded dash boards, etc. Bottom line, people respond to incentives.
