    Good news, very cool perspective
  2. whatever. In your post above you begrudge people for driving to campus, but when a legitimate question is raised about grad students who live off campus (some very far off campus, like Mentor, Akron, for whom public transit isn't an option) and commute in, you turn it into some sort of joke/personal attack at me. Very mature. Back on topic
  3. so how would you classify the thousands of people who are part time graduate students in the business program, urban program, law program, etc that work/live off campus???
  4. Talked to some friends this weekend that got to go through the new "Crop" location on the corner of 25th & Lorain. Sounds like it's going to be fantastic. Beautiful renovations of the original interior art & murals. This area continues to grow & thrive.

^great point Hoot, I agree 100% but we'll take the added tax base of that business which moved across the river won't we?

Unbunch my my panties? You're the conflicted one, not me. Did Kasich clarify where jobs were going to come from during his campaign? Does it really matter if a company comes from 1,000 miles away or 10 miles across the border? Does it? You tell me.

How can anyone say they aren't sure how they feel about new businesses coming to the area? Of course they were lured from other regions, near or far away, who cares? Other regions have been doing this to us for years with no response. Were you also unsure how you felt when this was going the other way? Or perhaps you just can't let yourself be happy about new business relocating to the area because John "lord vader" Kasich was responsible for the move?
  8. I'm sure they'll replace Connie with another lefty lib to keep the balance and satisfy the likes of you

^I see your point, but Walmart's have been putting mom & pop grocery stores out of business for the last decade, regardless. How can you incentify small business hiring & expansion, on a level that will support substantial decreases in utility rates? I think this plan is targeted more at "stealing" office & industrial operations from other states, trying to lure them back to Ohio... which in theory could jumpstart small businesses nearby if the larger employers made $5 million increases in payroll or $50 million expansions....

Of course Kasich is not popular on this site, but did you even read this article before assuming it was diabolical? "The plan calls for offering discounts on electricity to businesses that create or increase payroll by $5 million or more and add at least 75 permanent new employees in Ohio. Eligible businesses would also have to make a job retention commitment through the duration of the discount and agree to make at least $50 million in bricks-and-mortar investments." That sounds pretty good to me. I like the incentive aspect as well as the forced retention and the reinvestment requirement... if anything, it might be too stringent of requirements to entice many businesses to go for it. Or it could just be another move by John "Lord Vader" Kasich to ruin the state...
  11. This is ridiculous. Assuming it passes & is implemented, can you imagine the challenge of actually "representing" the needs of a district that is shaped in this manner?
  12. Columbus Dispatch has an article today outing Bobby Digironimo, local Cleveland businessman, principal of Independence Excavating, as booster who paid Terrell Pryor & other players. Anybody who knows "Buckeye" Bob Digironimo, knows he has been giving out hundred dollar handshakes for years. All four of his kids are OSU Alum. Every summer he would have OSU football players "working" in the shop delivering tools, etc to jobsites for wages much higher than they should've been paid. He watched the home games from the sidelines, stayed on the same hotel floor as the team when they go to bowl games, has a big RV done up in scarlet & gray that he takes to every home game, buys pizzas & meals for the entire teams, has a championship ring from 2002 season, has a driveway that is stained concrete with a huge "Block O", has a OSU custom painted Escalade... The university is absolutely complicit, they enable guys like this who are lunatic fans with loose money to get access to these young impressionable players, it feeds their addiction by letting them into the inner circle and be on the sidelines and watch practice and such... the young players don't know any better, than to accept an envelope from some rich old white guy who says "go play hard son & beat Michigan!" what are they going to say besides "yes sir".
  13. ^the Stern show was huge that day
  14. Since the weekend will be filled with newscasts & stories about the 10th anniversary of this infamous day, I'd like to create a thread where everyone can recollect their most powerful memory of that day, that moment in time. Of course we all remember where we were when we heard about the attacks, seeing the buildings fall, seeing emergency rescuers covered in ash, faces heavy with fatigue & grief. One memory that really struck me was a day or two following the attacks, Dan Rather was on Late Night with David Letterman, recalling the event and he was overcome with emotion and broke down in tears on the show. Dave comforted him as he sobbed and they went to commercial. Seeing a grizzled veteran news guy who's covered countless tragedies in his career break down like that made me sick and still does thinking about it. Edit: found the video clip on Youtube. Great insight from Dan Rather on the mindset of Islamic extremists and the war we've been waging for the last ten plus years... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2ocnOqUuGM&feature=player_embedded#!

Let's recap: - Politicians who support SB5 are just greedy fatcat FoxNews watching SOB's. - Business owners who support SB5 are just greedy SOB's who are interested in taking away people's rights. - Farmers who support SB5 are just greedy SOB's who are interested in keeping subsidies. Except the members of the Ohio Farmer's Union, they are good people. - Individuals who support SB5 just don't understand the bill or law in general. Honestly I don't think the law is too difficult to understand. Predicting the impact that passage of SB5 would have on state & local budgets is another issue that Hts121 claims to fully understand. I have no comment on that.

^Typical response from someone who doesn't know much about farming or farm subsidies and probably doesn't even know any farmers. If you did, they would likely tell you they are sick of school levies being put on the ballot time & time again and do not want to pay higher property taxes for schools they don't have children in, police & fire departments that don't support their rural locations, etc. My family still owns several farms and this is the overwhelming sentiment in these rural locations. Subsidies have nothing to do with it.

The first "Issue 2/SB 5" tv ads hit the airwaves this weekend. I saw it several times, the ad has a fireman saying reduced staffing will result in slower responses, etc. The tone was civil and didn't really attack the other side of being unfair or greedy. We'll see how long this civility remains and how long before the other side launches their ads.

Man, good point. I never thought of that. Damn those businesses and their selfish capital seeking interests...
  20. gottaplan replied to a post in a topic in Ohio Politics
I'm not trying to argue the merits of the bill, I'm just pointing out that the business interests are the ones that will be paying for all the pro-SB5 ads as this vote gets closer. If they are going to spend millions to counteract the public employee union crowd and their supporters, they must have some vested interest.

I think you're missing the overwhelming support for this reform from the business community. Kasich isn't pushing this issue because he is some anti-union guy, he's pushing the issue becaus the people that helped him get elected have told him to make it a priority. That isn't going to change.
  22. We already have large tracts of new land available residential along the lake. It's called Battery Park. And after 5 years it's not even half sold. I don't think creating new land for development is a real essential component of the project. You're only thinking about the actual mainline conversion into a boulevard and missing the critical interchange at 73rd which is essential to Gordon Square and the surrounding community. The interchange at 25th/28th is such a nightmare for vehicle & pedestrian traffic I can't believe it hasn't been redone already. These are the essential portions of the project, not the actual boulevard construction. The multi-use path you're dismissing would allow biking/jogging along the lake from downtown to Edgewater which currently doesn't exist - another key component of the plan, which as many have pointed out, exists in other cities like Baltimore, Chicago, Milwaukee, etc.
  23. Minimal? There are no intersections as currently planned and just the mere reduction in speed limit has West Side commuters up in arms. Be careful about making assumptions as to what effects others would consider "minimal". Traffic interruptions aside, it's now a cost issue. There isn't enough money to reconfigure the 25th/28th intersection which was the most important from a safety standpoint, there certainly won't be enough to reconfigure any others.
  24. so trust of ODOT studies aside, you DON'T think there would be significant traffic backups if at grade intersections were part of the project? It's a moot point, the latest iteration doesn't include any intersections and they still don't have enough money...
  25. where exactly do you think these four intersections would be located? And to answer your question, yes, they would be unacceptable. Traffic modeling studies done several years ago showed backups occurring even during light traffic and major backups occurring during peak hours.
