Not sure if the article mentions it but Michigan law allows the use of "Michigan Doubles" or "gravel trains". These can have a GVWR of 120,000 vs Ohio's limit of 80,000. Big difference
  2. A coworker was just telling me that alot of the existing buildings have been demolished where the new casino is going to go. Can anyone confirm? Pictures would be even better? I'm going to head down & check it out this weekend. Need to see the Flats progress too
  3. Having lived in the state of Michigan for many years, I can tell you our roadsides and streets are just as clean as theirs. Maybe cleaner. Many panhandlers who "clean up" bottles & cans laying around also throw trash out of containers in search for a few more dimes.... And panhandlers can't cruise the embankments of the highways picking up cans either. Besides, if people are going to litter, they're going to litter. 10 cents is not adequate deterrent.
  4. Holy cow I could not agree more. He seems totally oblivious to issues here at home and would rather focus on global issues which make him look foolish for trying to weigh in on them. Aside from Dennis, I'm really wanting this project to go forward. If they don't, Clifton needs repaved badly anyhow, so they might as well do some upgrades at the same time.
  5. Not necessarily development news, but the windows started getting replaced in the CMHA highrise along W. 25th yeseterday. The faded orangish/red are getting replaced with silver
  6. Just to throw in my 2 cents, I've been hanging out on W. 25th the past two years now and those places are really booming now on the weekends. What used to be more alternative crowds are now becoming more mainstream crowds and even "party buses" for bachelorette" type parties or whatever. These crowds used to be exclusive to the W. 6th bars, but not anymore. Sources in the liquor business tell me W. 6th's volume is significantly down to years past. Could be due to E. 4th impact also, but I'm sure it's a variety of things.
  7. This is excellent news. The boost in downtown business just from all the construction activity will be a nice bump. From the article, this building is going to get a major makeover, inside & out. Should be fun to watch the transformation
  8. ^have a little respect, someone got stabbed, that's not funny
  9. Some of these developments are already 15 yrs old. I know the ones near 65th across from Edgewater on Fr Caruso have their tax abatements expiring next year. Ditto for the Tillman townhomes in #1. I prefer the styles with more brick & stone & less vinyl siding. In these older established neighborhoods they blend in better and "age" better. Very cool thread though
  10. what a waste of a half-assed career
  11. Agreed, the coverage is very weak. When Detroit Free Press followed former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's saga, they had a reporter giving up to the minute blog updates on questioning & court details. Former Judge McCafferty guilty on 10 counts of lying to FBI. What's the sentence going to be? Jail? Disbarment?
  12. quoting "Rolling Stone" articles in a political discussion is like quoting "Wall Street Journal" for music news
  13. Or just scream at em to get away and blast em with pepper spray. That works too
  14. I haven't noticed a big increase in panhandling downtown, but last year I recall seeing sandwich board type signs around downtown about not helping out. It had some sort of catchphrase like "thanks but no thanks" or something but basically said not to give to panhandlers. Anyone else recall those signs around E. 4th area and others? What happened to them this year?
  15. I actually watched the video clip live last night and the discussion focused on two things - major overhaul of the tax structure to make it more fair, close loopholes, and increase revenue, and major spending cuts. Everyone agrees on defense spending, and changes to the structure of SS/Medicare/Medicaid, but nobody wants to step up, because it'll be political suicide. Is Herman Cain that crazy "taxes are too damn high" guy?
  16. Agreed, but I know they are following the blueprint established by the Cedar Lee district, which started with the theater and a few solid dining options, and is now a major entertainment spot. And they have a new parking structure... And if you know what houses I'm talking about on 65th, they aren't worth saving. I think one is a campaign headquarters that's pretty much vacant? Not to mention, this area still has alot of momentum coming. The Cleveland Public Theater is still under renovation and the open lot at the corner of 67th & Detroit will someday be home to the new Near West Theater. I think a parking structure will be much needed by then.
  17. I really like Roseangel, but I know others have mixed feelings as well. They are bringing back Salsa night I know, which went away for awhile, so that's cool. It's pretty far down there from the main intersection of 65th though. I wish it were closer. Or rather, I wish there was more development in between 58th & 65th. As it is now, I don't think many folks would feel comfortable walking that distance on a given evening.
  18. Very excited about these new developments too. XYZ food is okay, but another midrange to upscale restaurant to compete with Luxe would be great. Of course, the problem is already parking. They need to build a garage behind the Capitol where that lot is, take a few more of the houses to the north along 65th.
  19. ^did you read the article? Does it say anything about Wall Street greed??? No, it says spending must be cut significantly. Current political discussions about spending cuts amount to "arguing over the bar tab on the Titanic". Dem's are baiting the Repubs into sticking their neck out and calling for serious cuts & reforms. Then they will use it against them come election time. Majority of Americans are too stupid to realize or care.
  20. ^ I read that same article recently and found a number of the cities on there a surprise, since I'd absolutely consider moving there. Surprises to me included Baltimore, Memphis, and Indianapolis....
  21. ^corrected, thank you. Classic line from her baliff during questioning today: 'I knew she was stressed & was worried because she was smoking". Haha. Bridget stepping out to puff on a camel light?
  22. Former Judge Bridget McCafferty headed to court today to defend against corruption charges. Anyone want to weigh in where they see this going? Sounds like the feds have a pretty tight case...? Wiretapped phone conversations, Russo is taking the stand as a witness.... I'd say she gets a guilty conviction but a light sentence
  23. That sucks. That stretch of road & neighborhoods could really benefit from this type of project. The Cleveland section of Clifton is potholes galore. The Lakewood section is nice & smooth but its 7 lanes of asphalt cutting through a nice residential area which needs a little break up
