Honestly, I wasn't aware those networks you listed had donated to Strickland. What would their agenda be for doing so?

I don't think it's so interesting at all and probably is a drop in the bucket compared to all the union donations and contributions for Pro-Stickland and Anti-Kasich ads.... Anyone able to do some quick research and find out how much the AFSCME, SEIU, Teachers, Police and Fire unions have contributed???

Interesting story but hardly surprising as you noted yourself. I think most people who plan to vote for Kasich are doing so because of his pro-business stance and they're ok with that. It's easy to focus on all the downsides of a pro-business platform, but there are plenty of things that could be improved to make Ohio a more business friendly climate... lower taxes for one...
  4. Progress continues in the wine bar/west space of the Powerhouse. Must be getting close to opening. I saw kitchen exhaust fan & other equipment being delivered the other day and painting being touched up inside. Anyone have an update on target opening?

Well now you're changing your tune, your earlier post said Kasich was making 3-C the primary policy of his campaign... I just went back & looked at his website for 10 mins and I didn't see it. Not trying to be a pest, just trying to educate myself. Back to my original comment though, I think this 3-C issue is minor compared to alot of other alarming things about "privatization" on his website... Could the governor actually "give back the money" that is designated for the 3C project? I thought these types of budgets were usually tied to other items so states had to accept or lose funding to other programs like education or road construction The jobs issue is going to be front & center in pretty much every race, local, state & federal, and I honestly think it should be considering we're still hanging around 10% unemployment. The state is broke. I think focusing on much else besides how to attract & retain jobs is skirting the issue...

^^Interesting comments. Primary Kasich issue is Jobs Jobs Jobs. How Strickland didn't hang on to the jobs and how he will. I've seen every tv ad for both sides of the Governor's race probably 50 times and I can't recall the 3C train being mentioned ever....
  7. ^Interesting thought, but the logic is partially flawed. 3-C will be a commuter rail. It won't carry truck type freight. You still need highways for truck traffic even if you could get all passenger traffic to ride a train or some type of public transit... I know alot of people on this forum are in love with this train idea, but you really have to ask yourself why. Why is it better than cars? Why don't people take more public transit now, even when it's available? Why can't it be done for less money? I hear people discussing options of somehow "forcing" people to take public transit or penalizing them for driving a car... this is America, build a better mousetrap, don't wrap your idea in legal regulations and mandates so users don't have a choice...

I think the 3-C rail discussion is such a small issue for the big picture of voters. Sure it gets hotly debated on this site and is a passionate issue for some, but of the total electorate, how many are even well informed enough on the subject to make a reasonable decision? Hell I bet most voters don't even know what 3-C is...
  9. ^They already have that at Reserve Square and it's not doing very well...
  10. Not sure on the confusion, but Bohn Tower is at 13th & Superior - that's the CMHA building - definitely not for sale. The Rockwell building is up the street...
  11. Major progress on the project today, I need to get some updated pictures, but the upper portion of 76th are really coming together, alot of the new wall portions are formed & poured. Big pour down at the Lake Ave tunnel today as well. Most notably though, the old center stair section between the tracks and the Shoreway was demo'd out today. I came by in the morning and they were working on it. By the afternoon it was rubble. By next week they should be forming the retaining walls along the sloping grade to 76th...
  12. What's your point? Cars are made in China pretty much exactly the same as they would be here in the US. Same goes for everything from cell phones to air conditioners. The technology is the same regardless of where the manufacturing is. But that technology is also going to be focused at the location of the assembly plant. Which needs to be here in the US. Congress created the legislation which enacted NAFTA and created the outsourcing of so much manufacturing jobs. Close up that loophole and stop the outsourcing. Work with companies and unions locally to bring the jobs back. It can be done. It needs to be done.
  13. This whole Recession can be summed up in 3 words: Perot was right. Back when he was running for President in the 96 election, he was a vocal opponent against the NAFTA. One comment he was dead on was "That giant sucking sound you hear is the sound of jobs leaving America...." Truer words could not have been spoken. I have an engineering background and pretty much all my friends from college frequently travel to China or Mexico either setting up shop there or working with suppliers who already have. So now we have high unemployment, the home market is stalled out, the stock market is in flux... because Perot was right. Allowing all the manufacturing operations to relocate to foreign countries has been the #1 downer for our economy. I don't care what anyone says about bundling bad loans together or adjustable rates exploding etc. None of that would be an issue if there were still plentiful good paying jobs here. I have 2 cousins that are recently graduated from OSU in engineering, neither can find a job. That was UNHEARD of a few years ago. If this country is going to get on the right page, we need to go back to MAKING things. That's the only real way the middle class will be restored and have sustainable income. To hell with stimulus programs, tax programs, every other stupid govt program... Get people jobs and the rest will take care of itself. Healthcare included!!!
  14. I can't imagine something so tragic for a family as a young person committing suicide, but alot of things have to go wrong for that to happen. Parents need to be involved in their kids lives enough to know that something is wrong. Either giving them the tools to be able to deal with bullying or getting the school administration to intervene is a must, but is bullying really a new phenomenon? I have to think kids are just as cruel now as they were decades before, only now the parents are encouraged to sue the school by some nitwit attorneys...
  15. ^agree on all accounts. Just listened to a great speaker last week discussing the upcoming wave of commercial foreclosures.
  16. I think you're arguing for the sake of argument. This is essentially a dead area of the city that is contaminated, underutilized, and in dire need of new development. The new Opportunity Corridor can buy out those people, clean up the land, create new development, all while curing one of the worst traffic backups in the city. The new Land Bank already owns a good amount of the property here, why not give it a chance to add more parcels and really create an area within the city that can get some new life breathed back into it? None of the cleanup or buying out the current residents is ever going to happen if left to the forces of the normal market or private investment.
  17. Thanks for recapping Planning 101. And we're a long freakin way from having traffic problems of LA, Houston or Atlanta...
  18. So you support the current traffic jam conditions that occur daily now at Woodland/Kinsman & 55th? All that traffic trying to get over to 490 and cut over into the right lane is a nightmare. Are you aware that CMHA is consolidating and relocating over 350 employees to the new campus headquarters at 79th & kinsman next year? That'll be fun, watching all those folks try to leave work at 5 and make it to the highway... Hate the project if you will, but you're in the minority on this one
  19. Anyone make it to the furniture show/sale that was held in the Powerhouse on Saturday? I understand the wine bar is getting close, hoping to open in a few more weeks. He sent out a msg via facebook that he was looking to start interviewing & hiring employeess...
  20. Well, you can look at it two ways. Weakening him, or educating the voters. I prefer the latter At the end of the day, the PD is all about selling newspapers and getting readers to the website. This county corruption thing must've been a godsend for that. Blowing up every little detail & development is what they do best. Making a mountain out of a molehill. See the Warehouse district tensions for further evidence. I"m sure they'd love to see Fitzgerald get a little dirt on him now to keep the race close. Anyone else think it's a little too coincidental that the feds waited till the week after the primary votes to drop the hammer on these clowns? I suppose a better question is, would the votes have come in much differently if these latest arrests had come a month earlier?
  21. 20 single family homes & 48 townhomes built so far. I think there are 2 single family homes available and 7 or 8 townhomes available...
  22. Well if the new County Govt has disciplinary procedures, they should be amended that judges or other officials placed on administrative leave, like the judges charged, do not continue to receive full pay.
  23. ^So which was your dad, a gangster or a puppet master?
  24. Gangsters? Puppet masters? Come on now, I think someone's watched the Godfather a few too many times. Let's be honest, even though the facts against Dimora will be pretty overwhelming, what is he really guilty of? Alot of favors in exchange for favors. The stuff with the judges is very petty. Helping a buddy get his divorce cleaned up? Hardly a multimillion case and certainly nothing involving "gangsters". He got some masonry work done at his house and an ice machine installed to set up a fund raiser. Big whoop. Got a bj and some free trips to Vegas. Hardly gangster stuff here. The sad part is really how easily these fools were bought & sold... Russo is probably the exception, sounds like he had a bit more of an elaborate scheme going with the appraisal firm, but again, I wouldn't call it gangster activity or as if he was reporting up to some ultimate puppet master. No information has revealed that these two were reporting up to anyone besides themselves and their own selfish indulgences.

I'm really at a loss to support either Kasich or Strickland. I'm also at a loss to support the 3C rail project. It seems like such a pipe dream. I know there's a separate thread on this board to discuss it, but I definitely feel that the money could be better spent on other projects we need now. So for Kasich saying he'd kill the 3C project isn't really a reason for me to vote against him...
