Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
Digging out an old thread, construction progress looks steady for the new XYZ Tavern on Detroit next to the Public Theater. No idea on an opening date yet though. Anyone have an update on the "Toast" wine bar that was on 65th between the Capitol & Stone Mad? Last I knew there was a meeting this spring where the public was invited to sound off about the project and from there it was supposed to go to a Board of Zoning Appeals... haven't heard anything since...

Cleveland: Keeping its entertainment districts safe & vibrant
Club Alchemy is a mess. The parking lot outside has everything from guns to drugs & everything in between. Diamond's next door is suffering because patrons don't want to leave their cars outside with all that mess going on...

Cleveland: Shoreway Boulevard Conversion
Demolition work continues on this project. I'll have to get some more pictures but the the tunnel is now completely closed to pedestrian access for the rest of the duration and demo has really stepped up. Forming for new walls should start next week. At a meeting last week & Councilman Matt Zone said the interchange at W. 73rd under the railroad tracks was a definite go for 2013. Seems like a long time away but it really isn't.

Cuyahoga County: County Government Reform News & Discussion
After Dan Brady won in District 3, I'd say most definitely more of the same for CuyCo. Really sad too, considering what a great opportunity we have to make real changes for the future

Cuyahoga County: County Government Reform News & Discussion
Lanci's ideas on reducing taxes and streamlining govt sound great, but what exactly does he plan to do? You can't cut taxes without reducing services or adding some other type of user fees.... And I wonder how his plan would go over with the new council ward members, would they support such a plan? Seeing how the primary voters went, I see Fitzgerald cruising...

Cuyahoga County: County Government Reform News & Discussion
The number 1 thing I want to hear from any county exec is consolidating services with the overall goal of regionalism. Anyone who is weak in the knees about that topic or thinks it won't work should get out of the way right now.

Cuyahoga County: County Government Reform News & Discussion
I think Fitzgerald wins the Exec position for the Dems and in the overall this fall. I think Terri Hamilton Brown is going to surprise him though and pull alot of votes from the East side. I hope he can find a way to include her in the new administration somehow, she's too talented to not be. I confess, I do not know much about Ken Lanci other than he's a private business man with no political experience.

Cleveland: Keeping its entertainment districts safe & vibrant
Solution is simple. No loitering. Either you're in line for the bar/club or you're just hanging out. If you want to hang out, go somewhere else & get off the sidewalk. If you're in line for the bar/club, better be old enough to get inside & have $$$ for a cover charge. The amount of media coverage this recent story about the two "Morehouse College" students is getting is RIDICULOUS. Who cares where they went to college? If they were a couple white kids who went to Kent or BG and they got their ass pummelled by the bouncers, would it be a story? NO! Stupid media trying to create a story where there isn't. Were the bouncers too quick to bust them up, most definitely. But as the story stands, they were told to leave & clear out and instead they chose to stand & argue. I've been in the club enough times at closing to know you don't argue with the security staff. But because they were black college kids (like that automatically adds credibility to their side of the story) and the cops were white, we got a problem now??!!! Puhlease!!! Where's the outrage at the two white guys from out of town who were BEATEN so bad they were KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS & ROBBED while coming out of the West Bank flats??? Total non-story. The warehouse district will continue to decline as long as all this nonsense goes on. It can all become hip hop clubs for all I care. Plenty of new fun safe spots to go out in other parts of the city like E. 4th, Tremont, Ohio City, etc.

Cleveland: Downtown: Playhouse Square Development and News
Yes I have thought about it. I've done historic renovations in a number of cities, and those renovations included cleaning the exterior limestone/masonry similar to what's being done. A city can create & enforce this along with their building code, same way they can enforce businesses to keep up their storefronts to a certain level so there aren't tattered awnings, broken sidewalks, peeling paint. Of course it becomes difficult if the building doesn't have a full rent to help pay these maintenance costs, but it can be done in a downtown district.... another thing some cities do is to require inspections on the exterior of such buildings every other year. They inspect caulk, tuckpointing, make sure ledges, cornices, window sills, ballusters etc are not loose & crumbling. It basically forces building owners to do preventive maintenance on the exterior so the buildings don't get to a point where they are beyond repair....

Cleveland: Downtown: Playhouse Square Development and News
I was down in this area last night for class, the difference in what's been cleaned is amazing. Unbelievable the amount of soot that has been allowed to accumulate on the buildings for years at a time. The buildings will look so much newer & brighter. Cleveland should initiate some type of program to do this on a host of buildings downtown, perhaps offer some incentives for owners who have this done. Now that we've gotten away from the days of heavy industry, coal fired boilers, etc these buildings should stay clean for decades

The Continent, Columbus
Damn, we used to head to the bars at the Continent back in the mid 90's when I was a student at OSU. There was apartments nearby where students lived and there were a few bars in that development that were a big draw...

2010 Gubernatorial Election
I watched another Kasich ad this morning and he does call for smaller more effective govt but doesn't say how he'd go about trimming the fat. Assuming he was elected, I wonder what he could really do without full participation from the legislation? I guess what I'm asking is, what is the Governor directly affecting, in terms of government size, outside his own appointees and their staffs?

Cuyahoga County: County Government Reform News & Discussion
Slightly different discussion, what's everyone's thoughts on Terri Hamilton Brown's chances in the primary? I know a few people working on her campaign and they are working even harder since Ed Fitgerald got the party endorsement. I don't know alot about either candidate but I've heard good things about what she did while at CMHA. I think it's really going to come down to who can get their people to come out & vote. By the way, I saw Ken Lanci today. holy crap is he tan.

Cleveland: Shoreway Boulevard Conversion
The tunnel will remain open yet this week for pedestrian access to the beach, then next Tuesday it closes down completely and the serious demo will occur and I assume the existing steps will be taken out. That's going to be a big change. I need to get down to the other tunnel that's part of this project, in front of Don's Lighthouse and take some pictures of the progress over there.

Tunnel renovations are really moving along. Demolition is well underway as is the excavation for the new grade at 76th. Also digging for the retention pond down at Edgewater below. Retaining walls should start soon. I have plenty of pictures if anyone is interested. Also attached are a few basic overview plans from the ODOT prints.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
I like Lakewood, but I've been to several of the other cities on that list and Lakewood is a joke compared to Birmingham MI, Evanston IL, Roswell GA or Almeda CA. They have 10x the natural beauty, architecture, entertainment and culture. Sorry Lakewoodites.

2010 Gubernatorial Election
I was in support of Kasich early on, then I cooled off and figured he was toast when all the ads about him being a Wall Street exec for Lehman came out. He seems to have weathered that storm pretty well and is definitely on the attack regarding the jobs issue. But as others have pointed out, I'm not really sure what he plans to do to create jobs. He must have a TON of campaign support though, his commercials are on here in Cleveland 24/7. Makes me think he must be making some big promises to big businesses, otherwise those people will do whatever to get rid of Strickland...

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
Can anyone do a very quick approximation, running the numbers, on how long it might take to pay back that purchase price, based on typical lease rates, and a 92% occupancy? Of course there are myriad of other factors like taxes, maintenance, etc, just curious if it's more like 10 yrs or 20 yrs
