  1. I wish you, or some other conservative, would point to any appealing urban residential/entertainment neighborhood anywhere that uses the availability of parking as its (or even a) major selling point.
  2. Excuse me, but when did the neighborhood declare itself as not having an issue with this instant surface parking? It’s only been one week since an outside speculator/private developer bulldozed the Corbo’s edifice leaving it as surface parking despite the developer “hoping” it won’t last as such long. I’d hardly say this sudden and sad turn of events by one dollar-driven private entity foisting itself on LI’s thriving entertainment district represents some kind of surface parking plebiscite by LI's residents.

... I wonder how all those losers feel, who gave Derrick grief for not playing in the playoffs last year? They questioned his honesty and his team spirit as well as his manhood. That's not fandom; that's idiocy.

^The Rose injury is bad news for all lovers of pro basketball... His is a rare talent that most likely will never have the chance to fully flower (no pun intended).... I'm totally bummed about this.
  5. Downtown Cleveland Has Enough Gimmicky Tourist Attractions 4 November 2013 No Comment We’re getting ready to spend $16 million on a giant chandelier in Cleveland. One of my friends cited this as her breaking point, the reason she is moving out of Cleveland. She and her husband are planning to move to Minneapolis. At least they’re trying to do things with transit there and improve quality of life, she said. http://rustwire.com/2013/11/04/downtown-cleveland-has-enough-gimmicky-tourist-attractions/
  6. I totally agree with you ClevelandOhio, and unfortunately this wretched theme plays out again and again in the City: How Dan Gilbert runs roughshod on our historic preservation sensibilities, but city officials bury their heads because his casino brings in tax dollars and, as KJP noted, the wimpishness to allow property owners to maintain a hole on Public Square, the “living room” of the city. Of course, next door, the Warehouse District is similarly scarred…. Once again, where is the proper use of eminent domain when you need it a Club Corbo is demolished and a business district is severely damaged? Just because Frank Jackson has helped usher in a burst of significant development downtown and in certain trendy neighborhoods, should he get a “bye” for stuff like this? Is LI pressuring its councilman about this?
  7. ^^Terrible. How can you have a surface parking hole right in the middle of a high density district like this? For all the positive that has happened in LI recently, this is one giant step backwards. At least the investors have said the parking is an interim use. We can only hope.

Kyrie blew the game tonight, no ifs, ands or buts… with a 12-point lead, 4:40 left and the ball, Kyrie attempts a foolish alley-oop pass early in the shot clock when we should have taken the air out of the ball. That’s trying to rub the opponent’s nose in it, and N.O. was fired up after that. Of course, Kyrie went on to commit what has now become his signature, hog-the-ball-turnovers late in the game, which added to the comeback… This kid has talent oozing out of him, but he lacks big-time maturity at this point… And Anthony Bennett didn’t play and is out of the rotation… The AB disaster just keeps getting worst…
  9. ^^Very happy to hear about a Happy Dog branch opening in the Euc… Too bad about the Food Co-Op coming down for surface parking, but with the feeding frenzy growth happening in this area, it won’t be surface parking for long.
  10. Yep, this appears to be the case. Officials would rather wing it, ignore the trains and look to fill the $17.5M gap elsewhere rather than more logically tying in the bridge to the RTA Waterfront Line and the Amtrak terminal (potential regional rail hub) that fall just below it which would make the project eligible for a TIGER grant to subsidize this amount -- it was noted earlier that the Feds turned down the City's TIGER application because the bridge merely connects to a parking garage. It's unfortunate and myopic and once again reinforces the cars-first/anti-transit mentality of our public officials. This approach completely ignores the inter-mobile access/increased walk-a-bility possibilities for this area where officials clearly want to increase density and foot traffic.
  11. Yeah, I've been hawking TripAdvisor (and Yelp) too about Aloft and the U. Circle Courtyard/Marriott... I think the comments are generally pretty positive. Initially there was more gripes with the (N.S.) train rumbling/noise, but that has died down pretty much. ... I agree with Straphanger, those who have some issue with the somewhat minimalist nature of the hotel ("Ikea-like"), probably aren't familiar with the Aloft brand. And most seem to like the funky almost counter-culture décor.... The great news of this development is that Phase I tackled the largest, riskiest (large new class-A office space + hotel separated from core downtown) and engineering-ly most difficult aspect of this development.... Although most of us probably feel the residential/apt aspect is the most important along with the retail, these aspects should be less onerous, although I understand any large-scale, all-new building, esp apartments even given the high demand downtown, is challenging from a financing aspect.
  12. Wow, yet another groundbreaking push back … this time, until early next year, along with squishy words like “should” (break ground) added to an “ unforeseen issues” caveat. Seems Fairmount still can’t close the financing on this deal, even after the substantial County subsidy, extensive City infrastructure improvements and what should be money flowing from what appears to be the great success of Phase I (fully leased office tower; enormously popular new hotel and upscale eateries) … Can someone reassure me that Phase II will, indeed, happen? … Paul in Cleveland? Michelle? … Adam Fishman?

Campbell wasn't great today, but he was better than Andy Dalton who, amazingly, throws 2 picks and only for 93 yards total, but his team blows us out... But our Special Teams were disasterous; 2 blocked punts and a terrible long punt return for Packman Jones.
  14. ... add to that all the other townhouse and infill development that has happened (and promises to happen) at Uptown's fringes... Ronayne had a hand in just about all of this.
  15. ^^Hiring Chris Ronayne was the best move Jane Campbell made, in her otherwise lackluster mayoral administration. Ronayne, to me, is why Uptown even exists. When he came on the scene there was typical Cleveland dysfunctional-ism: UCI was a largely do-nothing agency kissing up to UH; Case was faltering, having fired their president for ineffectiveness, and the haughty Hessler Road neighborhood association had pretty much vetoed any serious development next door at Euclid & Ford…. As UCI president, Ronayne brought a too-rare can-do attitude; brought the parties together as well as his vision of a dense, transit-friendly, walkable, urban neighborhood… and now we have Uptown, which is indeed, all that…
  16. Yep, Cleveland Beer Cellars had a soft opening a few weeks ago at Uptown (in the northern end of the south/east pavilion on Euclid opposite Accent’s space). Their formal opening is next month … It’s a large, attractive space with large windows overlooking Euclid, an upstairs stage – yes, they feature live bands – and a large outdoor seating area on Euclid. Lots of beers on taps plus bottled beer seemingly from everywhere. CBC has the potential to pump even more life into the highly successful Uptown project. 18. It's a newer, somewhat fancier version of Ruth Chris'.
  19. Obviously, I think Eric Wobser has the more levelheaded approach here.... From Namik's tone, I don't look for the proponents of Sarstedt's plan to roll over on this.

This has devolved into the Globetrotters vs. Generals... Cavs have mailed it in… I'm out....
  21. Stopped in Red, the Steakhouse tonight to make reservations for Friday... and, of course, to check the place out. Very impressive and crowded. Make sure you bring a stocked-up pocketbook, cause, well, the appetizers costs what entree's cost in most sit down, downtown restaurants...and some of those entree's were north of $50... you get the idea. The steaks, though, looked up to the billing…. Lunch is coming in December; the rooftop seating, in the Spring.

... as they say in law: the defense rests.
  23. Guess I have a bad attitude about this whole thing… The 2 things I desire for the stadium ain’t gonna happen as long as the current folks are in charge: 1. Relocate the building away from this prime lakefront land allowing for proper residential/retail development, or 2. Dome the damn thing; preferably with a retractable roof, but a permanent roof would be better than what we have… Sorry, I’ve wimped out with the current milleneals. That He-Man/old school play games in the ice and snow is for the birds. I spent too much of my youth freezing my arse off at Browns and college games out in the bitter cold… Society has changed. People want excitement, but they want comfort as well… I’d rather be in my cozy man-cave with my 46" flat screen & the remote (or in a warm sports bar) rather sitting out there in the freezing cold… And of course, there could be so many alternate uses for an enclosed stadium that the outdoor concrete N’ steel bowl we’ve got now. Everything up to an NCAA Final 4 to a Super Bowl; but with a lot of concerts and big events in between. So my attitude to the Big Announcement is: Big Whoop…. To use the now tired old metaphor: this is tantamount to putting lipstick on a pig … thank you Sarah Palin… I think.
  24. BRT is a very broad terminology. Cleveland's BRT is highly urbanized -- a level bus line that runs through some core urban areas of the city. It’s only separated lane-wise from parallel traffic and, by traffic signals from crossing traffic… Pittsburgh and Minneapolis’ BRT runs largely on grade separated roadways or freeways so, necessarily, that type will be faster and probably more reliable than the Health Line.
