This is frustrating and shouldn't be happening in THE rail transportation mecca of the nation.

Canada: Passenger Rail News
I like the Euro/Canadian term "Light Metro" better than "Light Rail", as the former, which includes this new Ottawa rail line, is true, grade-separated rapid transit, as opposed to what we Americans like to call LRT, which includes everything from a Shaker Blue/Green rail system -- which is true rapid transit -- to Cincy's and Detroit's new street car lines, which are hardly "rapid" and, yet, for Americans who seemingly prefer to go cheap rather than efficient, they can pretend their LRT's are actually rapid transit ... or a close substitute. Not! A

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Bottom line is that the Cavs truly are the most talented team in the East by a wide margin... BUT it is also a team with demons, chief being that they are wont to get complacent and bored when they have big leads and stop playing fundamental basketball. In playoffs that can't happen because the 2 teams in a series have the opportunity to assess their opponent's weaknesses and every opponent is made up of NBA players -- if you give any player or team the belief they can win and give them the opportunity, they will in fact win, which is what Boston did on Sunday. Same thing happened to us in Games 3 and 4 last year in Toronto. ... Obviously we have to be on full throttle all the time against the superior (than Boston) Warriors. Fortunately, by necessity, complacency is never a Cavs' problem when we play Golden State.

I disagree. It's a must win because you can't give any NBA team confidence in a short series, esp the team that won the Eastern Conference record-wise. As I said, Boston matches up better against the Cavs with Smart at point rather than Thomas. Another win by them would fuel confidence they can beat us in the series and they'd be going home. I'm confident that the will win ... that said, they must follow through. We will have to agree to disagree here. I thought all of us Cleveland fans realized last year that its not a must win game until the other team has three wins...that holds even more true when you have Lebron on your team Come on, Believeland, I'm as dyed in the wool Cleveland/Cavs fan as anybody, but you can't tell me that, early/mid 2nd quarter, when Boston was dominating every aspect of the game last night -- including on the glass, which is absurd for one of the worst rebounding teams in the League -- and when LeBron, then, went out with 4 fouls, you weren't the least bit worried... and remember, this is a Cavs team that, for the last umpteen games, hasn't won one when LeBron sits... That's not just fandom, that's craziness... ... yes, ultimately in the 2nd half our superior talent in Kyrie, with help from Love and Thompson, prevailed over the scrappy, lest talented Celtics. But they certainly put a fear in me last night up till halftime. And from the silence and stunned look of fans as the halftime buzzer sounded, I surely wasn't alone (and no, I'm not calling you Shirley).

Phew! That's what have superstars is about... When LeBron got 4 fouls with 6+ minutes in the 2nd quarter (when Lue foolishly left him in after 3), and Boston was dominating the Cavs with 16 and 12 point leads, I saw it slipping away.. But then came Kyrie... and Love and Thompson were important elements as well, but this was about Kyrie Irving. He kept the lights on until LeBron was able to come back, play well and avoid any more fouls... Great win!

^But Montco has both high-quality DC Metro (2 substantial Red Line branches) as well MARC commuter rail service... Baltimore's rail network is not yet fully realized. I tend to root for quality transit everywhere, not just in select places.

It's simple -- because when the Democrats controlled Congress at the beginning of Obama's presidency they FAILED TO DELIVER on their promises, yet again. I love the Democratic Party platform -- but the Obama/Pelosi/Reid leadership did not enact near enough of it to make a difference. I disagree; they did make a difference under the threat of Tea Party (Tea Bagger) threats and craziness.. Obama "failed to deliver" because too many weak-kneed Dems were too skittish to get behind him for fear of purple state/district backlash. His jobs and infrastructure bills would have addressed many economic ills -- as it was, even what Obama was able to get through helped right the ship the Bushies were sinking... TIGER was a very worthwhile program granting transit projects in large cities.

Hogan's the man who, just 6 months into his administration back in 2015, deep-6ed Baltimore's Red Line, over a decade in the making and something like $250M spent -- a massive subway/LRT project which had been meticulously planned by prior governors and mayors (including Martin O'Malley) green-lighted by Obama. Oh yeah, they all happened to be Democrats... The Red Line would have connected popular neighborhoods and destinations like Fells Point, Canton, Harborplace, East Harbor, Social Security/Security Mall and MARC rail, as well as bound together Baltimore's existing LRT and HRT. So let's not be blinded by whatever rose pedals he's tossing the DC suburbs, who already have excellent Metro Rail service, btw. Hogan acted as a typical Republican and kicked Maryland's largest city right in the economic solar plexus in so doing.

^ ^^ These last 2 posts suck pretty bad. Just shows the backwards direction of this country on passenger rail and transit (and a whole lot of other things) under Republicans... I'm very quick not to put all this on Trump because he's just the doofus of the moment... He's a product of Republicanism, not the other way around. Republicans regressive views and policies on trains and transit have harmed both for decades. Our systems are the laughing stock of the Industrial World thanks to Republicans. My question: why are Americans so dumb as to keep electing Republicans?
-
Other States: Passenger Rail News
Cool. Republicans labeled the Cali HSR project a "boondoggle." Really!? I just don't get why Republicans generally are so adamant against public transit. It makes no sense. Totally backward, and this attitude has held the USA back transit/passenger train-wise to this day... But in the end, I'm glad to see this project moving forward. Denver is proving commuter rail electrification need not be confined to Chicago and the East Coast's largest metros ... or to the 1930s and before...

Tristan Thompson had one of the games of his life yesterday. He was the only Cav who punched in at the time clock... Too bad his great effort was wasted.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Last night was an embarrassment and an irritant. We KNOW this is clearly the superior team in the East and one that is capable of beating the current Golden State Warriors to win the championship... But we obviously still have demons; the ones that manifested during the regular season; esp late in March and early April. LeBron struggled all night, but regardless: we had a 21-point lead in the mid-3rd quarter against an inferior, Isaiah Thomas-less Boston Celtics team at The Q. This team -- as it's wont to do -- simply got bored, fell asleep mentally and, as Lue has noted often, disrespected the game of basketball, and that's inexcusable... No way a Golden State or a healthy Spurs team blows a lead like that; not in the playoffs, no matter the opponent nor the win/loss situation. So obviously it had to be that other players either stopped producing in the 2nd half and played down to LeBron's level of play (Love, Kyrie, especially) or simply didn't show up at all (Deron Williams, Jefferson)... Williams was especially bad in clanking shots and turning the ball over especially during that critical stretch late in the 3rd when Smart got hot behind the arc. I know it sounds crazy, but Marcus Smart is a better fit at pg against the Cavs than Thomas -- he's big, physical (unlike IT) and can shoot the 3 when he's hot -- like last night. Kyrie usually has his way offensively against the smaller Thomas. But Smart gave Kyrie fits when no. 2 tried to drive the lane. Kyrie was getting crowded out, blocked and often ended up turning the ball over because of Smart's superior defense. I know tomorrow now becomes a "must win" or else we lose homecourt back to Boston and they return to TD Bank with both momentum and the belief they can beat the Cavs... Won't happen. LeBron will likely focus, muscle up and the Cavs will blow Boston away much like Games 1 and 2... It's just that LeBron and this team have established an obvious and nagging blemish... I think this loss may put pressure on the team come June 1 when we go into Oracle against you-know-who. I also hate the fact that, now, the team is forced to travel back to TD Bank to play at least 1 more game before those spoiled, pampered, A-hole fans... Oy!

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
I know the Water Taxi is not easy and I would rather have this in the more qualified hands of Metroparks than the fly-by-nighters who ran the old Holy Moses -- fun though HM were back in the Flats' heyday of the mid/late 1990s -- I'm just thankful there were no serious accidents and fatalities with HM because the condition of their boats was awful and the experience of their crewmen, suspect... Even if, for now, Metroparks just added 1 more boat and crew to run the back 'n forth to the West Bank, I'd be happy for now... I'm not sure when you tried it PoshSteve, but there were definitely lines when we tried Water Taxi last summer on a Saturday afternoon -- one our trip over we had to wait 3 boat revolutions before we could get over-- we didn't mind too much because we were just enjoying all the excitement and activity of the rejuvenated East Bank... Coming back it was just 2 revolutions... Add to that the fact the 2nd mate crew man (woman in this case) was taking fares and counting the passengers to make sure there was available space on the boat... 1 more boat + crew would work ... for now. btw, isn't Metroparks a quasi-public agency meaning, couldn't they seek some kind of local, state or federal grant to run water taxi as transportation service in the public interest? Just curious.

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
I always love these smug easterners' view expressed in the article's headline: Geraldo is moving to "Ohio" as if Cleveland, greater Cleveland in this case, isn't even worth mentioning even though Cleveland is mentioned in the article... The NY Post is a rag, anyway.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
It's going to be tough for Vegas and the national press to favor the Cavs given the huge star power of the Warriors -- esp after picking up Durant -- as well as their, once again, runaway best regular season record... But I agree with you, in looking at the Cavs right now... I myself and not comfortable with predicting a Cavs repeat, but I think we're at least a 50-50 bet to do it.

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
Obviously, I like most people, absolutely love the awesome, long-standing service of Cleveland Metroparks: their tremendous upkeep of our amazing Emerald Necklace park system; the Zoo; Merwin's Warf and the major improvements/upgrades of Edgewater Park since they've come in a few years ago... They're obviously good people. I'm just not sure they are the best group to be running the Water Taxi... I'm not saying they aren't, I just feel the jury is still out... The boat and crew of the single run they now have is top quality, as expected. No denying that. But even before they started, I was a little put off by their decision to cut off service after 9p because, in their words, they weren't designed to 'ferry around drunks' in the Flats... That attitude was troubling if, for anything, how could they project the Flats would revert to being, once again as in the old torn-down Flats, a crowd largely of drunks? I haven't seen that so far I the happy resurgence of FEB and even quality-looking Collision Bend restaurant/brewpub. I don't know if a better regulated (than the old Holy Moses folks) private water taxi operator wouldn't be preferable for the Flats... I'm not saying they would; I'm just not sure they wouldn't be... With all the casual boaters, including college crew, jet skis, paddle boats and small pleasure craft along the Cuyahoga in the Flats these days, it's obvious that a whole lot of people want to be out on the water. From the long Water Taxi lines we endured last summer just to ride across the river and back, it was obvious back then... and now, this summer, with FEB even more established -- and East Bank establishments expanding, it's even more so.

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
Sounds pretty conservative to me. I mean the FEB has been open 2 years and we've had a full summer with the FEB boardwalk open. .Same with Merwins. Shooters has been open since forever as has been the Powerhouse which has had the Aquarium for, what, 4 or 5 years now? What are they waiting for? I'll give Metroparks last year to get their legs under them. But now it's over a year and clearly the Flats, esp FEB, has established itself as a bonafide hit, esp on weekend nights (and not even warm ones at that). Now with many designated cultural events down there along with Flat Out Friday's which was a hit... Again, what is Metroparks waiting for?
-
Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
What's going on with the Metroparks Water Taxi? According to their website, they're still just doing that single-boat, over-and-back FEB-FWB shuttle. Seems a waste. I would have thought, by now, they would have multiple boats and have routes covering places Merwin's, Settlers Landing, Wendy Island and, maybe even, North Coast Harbor. What's the holdup, lack of corporate sponsors? This is the summer I thought Water Taxi would really be expanding, especially with expanded activities and restaurants on and coming online like Collision Bend and Margaritaville.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
As much as the boredom kills us as fans, and as much as pundits like Brian Windhorst want to believe the team will be rusty, these long breaks-after-sweeps play right into No. 23's hands. He was fresh as a daisy and attacking the lane all night yesterday. With the beating he takes during games, esp during the regular season, and the long minutes Lue plays him, LeBron needs that rest... ...btw, I noted a week or so ago my concern that Richard Jefferson had dropped out of the rotation, thinking we'd need him for Golden State... Lue played RJ last night ahead of Frye.
