The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
Cleveland is gaining Geraldo. Much more famous than Ruhlman...and arguably sexier. Yep, and I'm sure Geraldo has written books, even though I haven't read any of them...

... also the large building on S. Woodland in Shaker, now known as Woodbury 1-8 Elementary, which was Woodbury Junior High in my day, was originally Shaker's High School, as noted by the map... Onaway ES next door, was only planned on the map. The current HS, at that time, wasn't even projected...

Cleveland: Random Development and News
Interesting 1920s era map. Of note: Chester Ave, from downtown, ended at E. 30th street. There was a small section of (what became) it named Windsor Ave (between E. 40 and 55th streets), which explains for that tiny block of those still surviving old Philly-style row houses on Windsor Terrace in about the 4100 block. Most of what we know of as Chester today was an extension built during or after WWII IIRC (which is why, until recent years, there were very few homes, apts or businesses that actually fronted on Chester). Also, of course, there was no Shaker Square at that time, but Moreland Circle where, in the middle, the 2 Rapid lines split, as opposed a block east of that location where they now separate. Surrounding it were mostly numbered lots in the Van Sweringen allotment... Also the Shaker Rapid, called the Cleveland & Youngstown RR, heading downtown, ended on a ramp up to the street at E. 34 where rapid cars headed to Public Square over city streets... Terminal Tower and the (then referred to as) Terminal Group buildings were still on the drawing board. Some numbered streets were referred to as their original names, like Highland Street for W. 117... good stuff.

Cleveland Area TOD Discussion
Clearly the Red Line's Little Italy-UC station is the undisputed TOD king with the several LI projects planned and Centric rising on the Uptown side... Speaking of Centric, it is rising very quickly with the 1st level complete and moving to the 2nd floor going in. Viewing the project at ground level, it seems much larger than I had visualized. .. With all the excitement about this Red Line location, I'm betting that the parking lot across Mayfield from Centric will be next to go. It's a high quality, interesting urban neighborhood as it is, and the idea of another mixed-use building going in opposite Centric in the middle of everything, seems like a winner.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
^Good news only if there was no hanky-panky subverting a rightful claim by the woman... Otherwise the Browns end up getting a quality player for a badly needed position in a late round steal.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Jackson's calling Reed a "pimp" was really weak and small-minded by the mayor. I'm really surprised given is long incumbency and wisdom through age he would stoop to such childish name calling. Bad move out of Frank.

Other Countries: Passenger Rail News
Every country in the world is investing seriously in passenger EXCEPT for the Republican-dominated, knuckle-dragging US of A where focusing on bombs and the wealthy are the main priorities.

Detroit: Transit News
You need to petition RTA GM Joe Calabrese who seems adverse to anything on rails. There have been several streetcar or LRT projects he's beaten off in favor of BRT.

Giant Asterisk. They, once again, are the beneficiaries of good fortune. No way they finish that off if they dont roll Kawhis ankle ... and starting point guard, Parker, is gone for the playoffs. A team of Aldridge, Paddy Mills, Danny Green and a bunch of rookies not only blew out Houston by 30, but nearly beat Golden State... Yes, that group gave up a 20-point lead... But with SAS's coaching and, hopefully, Kawhi back, they can beat the Warriors... And even if they don't, they exposed the Warriors and, to me, look less formidable to the Cavs.

It's a gorgeous, historical building that is also sizable. I'm glad their plans are just for investment purposes..at least that's what they're saying... I'd hate seeing this one demolished.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
Our attendance is much better this year as is befitting a thrilling World Series contender. 28K yesterday (plus the squirrel) for another small-market, non-Detroit, Cubs, Yankees team was a very nice crowd. I'm more concerned with the team's total lack of hitting more than I am anything else.

NBA: General News & Discussion
This isn't the first time Harden completely disappeared in a playoff closeout game. He had a similar game 3 years ago when Golden State came back from a deficit to beat Houston and Harden had something like 14 turnovers. This from a guy who was the 2nd-rated MVP vote-getter ahead of LeBron, which once again exemplifies that the MVP should include the much more important playoffs as opposed to just the regular season... I have no sympathy for Harden. This is the same guy who took off after his rookie season in OKC with budding powerhouse featuring him, Durant and Westbrook because he wanted to be The Man on his own team... Well, he is The Man now in Houston, but like a good ship's captain, he once again has gone down with the ship. Yesterday was totally embarrassing for Houston, who went down to an old San Antonio team sans its superstar in Leonard and it's former All Star starting point guard in Parker. Mike Dantoni seemed completely clueless in piloting this team as well. The Rockets played with no discipline and totally quit. This was much more than the Spurs' excellent pick 'n roll defense.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Lots of talk in the FEB thread about the new Collision Bend micro-brew/restaurant. It's interesting that when RTA's Waterfront Line was new, even a moderately upscale restaurant like the Watermark (which was in the same spot Collision Bend occupies today) used to print on its menu's and literature that the restaurant was only steps away from the FEB station, even including a small map of the juxtaposition of the restaurant and the Rapid station... Nowadays since the WFL has become such a hated facility by RTA much of the public, no way would Collision Bend or any new restaurant tout the trains. People would look at you strangely if you even suggest anything but driving, cabbing or walking up and downhill in/out of the Flats as a means of getting there... Funny how things change.

Cleveland: Little Italy: Development and News
I did not reread, in detail, last year's article about this project, but I wouldn't be surprised if, like the apts planed for the Golden Bowl site, these units would be converted to condos once the market is right.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
I stopped by a few weeks ago, too. Though a much different kind of place, I couldn't help thinking about the classy Watermark that used to be here. Collision Bend though has retained Watermark's configuration almost totally despite an obvious difference in décor. Bruell and Purcell have done a nice job; CB is a classy place. And its so good to see life seeping back in outside of Fairmount's FEB footprint. These old Victorian buildings are awesome and let's just say it without a hint of arrogance: Milwaukee and other riverfront café settings are very nice, but the Flats are simply unique.

Excellent sleuthing guys... This guy should be exposed publicly for this. I know court records are per se public, but obviously in this case it's not enough...it should not be the mere secret that it currently is...his narrow self interest is hurting both the neighborhood and the City.

Cleveland: Little Italy: Development and News
Quote from Michelle's article today: To the north, between Coltman Road and East 123rd Street, a 200-plus-unit apartment plan has been stymied by litigation involving one nearby homeowner for two years. So this other huge, promising apartment plan is being held up for the last 2 years by one homeowner!? Anybody know any details about this?

^I know she was a witness when Braylon Edwards punched out one of LeBron's associates at a club several years ago during the LeBron I era. She was dating one of the Browns at the time. She has some kind of online health/fitness business. Apparently trouble follows her.

Cleveland: Downtown: Standard Building
Pretty exciting. The Standard has beautiful Art Deco detailing... When this building is finished, along with TT, the Beacon, Garfield and, maybe, Union Trust, the downtown apt population is going to skyrocket.
