Cleveland icon ideas
^I will say that vista of the Main Ave bridge over the Cuyahoga and Flats entertainment district has become iconic in itself, so that any different form of the bridge, or no bridge at all, would look weird.

Cleveland icon ideas
^Actually, I'd just as soon tear down the Main Ave bridge for good rather than replace it, esp with the boulevard-ing of the West Shoreway, its utility as an high-speed east-west connection has been supplanted by I-90, 490 and, (ugh) the coming OC. But for Cleveland drivers convenience is paramount, so that probably won't happen. As for making its replacement an icon, I think the single, mid-road suspension bridge style has played out or, at least, we've become over saturated with it. Also, because the Main Ave squeezes between, and is close to several office and WHD buildings, a continuous suspension-type viaduct would be visually messy... I've actually come to like the more understated Inner Belt bridge over the Flats with the funky color lighting underneath.

Closing off the EC/CH borders isn't workable and would likely/justifiably raise cries of racial segregation.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I've seen lots of Tribe-game bound friends complaining on social media about the redline today. You're right--a few runs of the articulated longer buses would have certainly helped. It's a sign of bureausclerosis when an agency can't even react well to planned changes in circumstances. You would think RTA would plan a shutdown when the Indians are on the road and there are no big events downtown... In somewhat RTA's defense, the next 2 weeks feature Labor Day and the Air Show next weekend and the Browns home opener with the Steelers in 2 weeks, both of which will have rare crowding/rushes on the Waterfront Line, which is a good thing.... The arguments against RTA is why didn't they time this construction/rehab earlier on seemingly slack weekends?

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Boston also has the Lakers' 2018 1st round (also unprotected). The Lakers, like the Nets, are likely to be in next year's lottery even with precocious rookie Lonzo Ball, Brook Lopez and the boyz, so this pick, too, will likely net big talent in next year's projected talent-rich draft -- which, of course, is why the Celts, uncomfortably, were willing to part with the Nets' pick to help land the elite Kyrie ... But if I'm Koby I'm going for it. If Danny says no, then we weigh our options. Maybe we back out... maybe not; we've already

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
^Cavs are in the catbird seat. If Thomas' hip is still, in fact, injured, I were Altman, I may just keep Thomas and the trade in tact, but additionally demand either another 1st round pick or Jayson Tatum. If Danny Boy balks at both, then we rescind the deal.

Cleveland: Historic Photos
Amazing set, KJP. I always wonder what this corner, and much of Euclid we today call Midtown would have looked had those WWI-era plans for a subway up Euclid had materialized. There was so much density in/around that old Uptown/Doan's Corner era. So many apartment buildings along Euclid were bulldozed, just like Doan's Corner -- in 1950 Cleveland had 914,000 people within the same borders of today -- or 11,870 people per square mile (Chicago's density today is 11,898) -- today Cleveland barely has 5,000/square mile. It's breathtaking to consider what we lost over, really, a mere 30-year period.

Carmelo Anthony to Cavaliers not as farfetched after big trade By Marc Berman August 23, 2017 | 8:42pm When the Cavaliers talked to the Knicks about Kyrie Irving, Cleveland brass had no interest in discussing Carmelo Anthony. Kristaps Porzingis was their lone focus. Whether that changes after the blockbuster trade that sent Irving to the Celtics, with the Cavaliers emerging with more assets than anyone imagined, remains to be seen. As does whether Anthony, who has a no-trade clause, will have renewed interest in playing with LeBron James — even if it is for one season. http://nypost.com/2017/08/23/carmelo-anthony-to-cavaliers-not-as-farfetched-after-big-trade/

Report: People close to LeBron James confident Dwyane Wade will join Cavaliers by Colin Ward-Henninger LeBron James has said that at some point in his career he'd like to play on the same team as his best friends -- Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul -- and he may take a step toward that goal this season. In the "Wine and Gold Talk" podcast with Chris Fedor for cleveland.com, Joe Vardon reported that LeBron's camp thinks Wade will be end up in Cleveland this season. From Vardon: As of right now, people close to James are fairly confident that, at some point this year, Dwyane Wade is going to end up on the Cavs. https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/report-people-close-to-lebron-james-confident-dwyane-wade-will-join-cavaliers/

These are skewed. Thomas was the man in Boston. His numbers will go down playing next to LeBron, as will his ball handling. Kyrie's ppg will likely rise playing next to Hayward in Boston; the latter being much less ball dominant.

Way to show of the 'intelligence' of Cleveland fans... First some fans burned LeBron's jersey when he left in 2010, then cheered on Dan Gilbert after is wacko 'open letter' to LeBron shortly thereafter. Not a good look nationally.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
In my mind this is kinda an apple and oranges comparison, except for those riders who want to go from Little Italy to Public Square. If I wanted to go to Tower City I would of course take the Red Line. However, if I wanted to go to the Clinic, Gallucis, CSU, Playhouse Square, Heinens, Jacobs Field or points north on East Ninth Street I would take the Health Line. The Red Line is quicker but at least on the east side between University Circle and Public Square it doesn't go anywhere I or most people want to go. Too bad City leaders continue to punk out in building a subway up Euclid again and again... btw, a person in Little Italy wouldn't opt for the Health Line over the Rapid to get to Progressive Field. Not so sure about Heinen's, either for a person in Little Italy would have to walk practically as far to get to the HL as they would from Tower City to Heinen's for a ride that takes twice as long to get there and, as noted above, even longer during rush hour.

I like the deal. You swap comparable point guards although Kyrie, overall, was better imho. You also get Crowder, who is a nasty defender at the 3 and who is a decent 3-point shooter at nearly 40% last regular season. He is a worthy LeBron backup... Zizic could be a strong big at some point and, perhaps, can take some load off Tristan... But almost of equal importance is the Nets' 2018 unprotected first round pick which, as Believeland hints, will likely end up in the top 3; maybe no. 1. If all remain reasonably healthy, we now have Thomas and Rose backing him up at the point. You also have Cedi Osman as a potentially strong 2-3 swingman back up, especially defensively. We also bring in Jeff Green as the backup 4, who also has strengths... All in all, we look pretty good on paper despite the tumultuous off season... The only potential downer is Thomas' health. His playoffs hip injury was huge and some are saying the Celtics may have viewed him as damaged goods and, therefore, were willing to part company with him... Ironically we will immediately see Kyrie at the Q for the opening game next season on national TV. I'm sure the fans will trash him unmercifully. And while I thought he chose a graceless way out the door, I will forever be grateful to him for THE SHOT in Cleveland sports history. Besides that he provided tons of enjoyment for Cavs' fans for 6 seasons here and I hope fans remember that, too.

Cavaliers, Celtics agree on deal for Kyrie Irving and Isaiah Thomas By Joe Vardon, Cleveland.com jvardonCleveland[/member].com CLEVELAND -- The Cavaliers and Celtics agreed on a trade to send four-time All-Star Kyrie Irving to rival Boston for two-time All-Star Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, and a No. 1 draft pick next summer. Imagine that. Irving would still open the 2017-18 season in Cleveland. The Cavs and Celtics play the first game of the NBA's schedule at The Q on Oct. 17. Think fans will remind him he asked out of Cleveland? The Cavs acted on Irving's July request to move him, two years before he hits free agency, so he can escape LeBron James' shadow, by netting a significant return that includes not only the NBA's third-leading scorer in Thomas but two players and Brooklyn's No. 1 pick in 2018. http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2017/08/cavaliers_celtics_in_discussio.html#incart_2box

^There you go... pretty amazing. And the HL is an upgrade in speed over the old No. 6 bus it replaced, it just can't come close to competing with the Red Line speed-wise... I do believe dedicated BRT lanes from E. 105 to E. 118th Street would certain help speed things up for the HL. It's hard to envision this happening given the level of traffic through this area during rush hour ... and btw, on more than one occasion while driving, I've been caught in bumper-to-bumper westbound traffic on Euclid between 3:30 and 5p.

Which is why University Circle employees (esp UH employees), students and visitors are better off walking to the Little Italy-UC Red Line station (which is .4 miles from UH's main building; .3 miles from the corner of Euclid and Mayfield) and taking the Red Line downtown or beyond... IF a. their destination downtown is west of E. 9th or b. they're heading to the West Side... The Rapid usually only takes 14-to-16 minutes to reach Tower City from Little Italy.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
^^ ^ OK, now the PD is reporting 2 shootings: a 17-year-old accidentally shot himself (sustaining a powder burn) while running away from the cops and a domestic incident with a shooter on a bike... So there were 2 shooting incidents this past Saturday night. Not good... As I said, I'm glad CPD established a cop substation at Public Square, a la Times Square. I want a police presence but not a police state with a bunch of cop goons throwing their weight around on a testosterone high intimidating the public. I also don't want the punks to take over either because decent folks and families will stay away... Hopefully we can find a happy balance to Public Square may continue it's back-to-the-future growth as an honest to goodness urban park for, well, the public.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
^Yeah, unfortunately Public Square has been getting somewhat rowdy as it was in its pre-reconfiguration days. In some recent trips to/from the TC Rapid station in recent months; the latest being mid-afternoon last Monday, I've seen a couple fist fights breaking out with crowd around them... The only thing that calmed the latest altercation was that 2 cops were seen heading towards TC from mid-Square near the fountains. I thought it was a great idea to have a CPD cop station visible and well located inside Tower City on the Square, but still some idiots are still prone to nonsense, most notably in/around the HL bus stop... I hate the idea of a police state, but cops may need to keep a sharper eye out for this kind of B.S. The great success of the new PS is that it has become a family-friendly, people centered place that has actually become a destination and not just the dowdy RTA bus terminal it used to be. It will revert to a punk hangout joint if officials don't get a handle on the escalating problems that have been occurring there of late.

RTA plans 'rebranding' of two HealthLine bus stations in University Circle as 'Museum Stops' By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority plans to host a gathering at 1 p.m. today to announce the "rebranding" of two HealthLine bus rapid transit stations near cultural attractions in University Circle as "The Museum Stop." An RTA announcement states that "colorful artwork and depictions of area museums are included in the new designs that embellish the stations." The changes in graphics are intended to help RTA riders associate the stations as "Museum Stops," to clarify which ones are closest to attractions including the Cleveland Museum of Art and Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra. The new Museum Stops are located on Euclid Avenue at Stearns Road and Stokes Boulevard, RTA said. http://www.cleveland.com/architecture/index.ssf/2017/08/rta_plans_rebranding_of_two_he.html#incart_river_home

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
^^btw, the new Van Aken Center is currently building a similar low/mid-rise apartment building with wood-frame construction above the base level. As noted, Snavely is using it too on Detroit @ W. 25th. Apparently this is a state-of-the-art technique... and as noted, it likely saves a bunch of $$ which is the bottom line.
