^Mike started off well, but the wheels really came off this season. Johnny, Gilbert, Bowe, Erving and the boys undercut Mike as well; plus he had no answers... ... anyway, back to da buses & trains.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Helps being a guy (I am assuming from your name) and helps more if you are larger and look neither very young nor very old. The only reason anyone bothers me pretty much anywhere is if they think I am Mike Pettine. But can you coach? ... because, if so, you've got a serious leg up on Mike.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
^I understand this sentiment but, of course, money is an issue for hiring personnel to man the 17 other stations than TC. Also, even going back to the CTS days, these people went off duty after rush hours, meaning CTS/RTA had to run those dreaded 1 car trains with passengers lining up, single file, to pay their fares to the driver while the train car just sat there at each (non-Tower City) station until everybody was paid and on board. No thanks! Nowadays RTA runs 2-car trains as its base with a single driver; trains are, thus, faster and more efficient, and there's also more seating for passengers.... So if we went back to the pay-booth system, not only would trains be slower, less efficient, and often jammed with people but, in light of greater off peak travel, you would still have un-staffed stations during non-rush hour and into the night anyway. So on this one, I think RTA got it right with POP. I just think there need to be more cop presence at the stations, particularly at night. And get them the hell out of Tower City so much, which is a waste of resources.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
I never really saw the burning need for the 73rd Street underpass since a new, wider/safer pedestrian tunnel was built under the RR tracks from BP to Edgewater Park, which is literally a hop, skip and jump from Battery Park anyway. But if the residents are happy with the bridge, who am I to say? I just hope it doesn't become a shortcut for drivers passing through Gordon Sq and Battery Park, with no business or connection with either.

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
^^ I really like the design of the townhouse group. Their sizes, materials, color and layout, mesh well with the neighborhood (let's hope reality will be as good as the rendering).

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I've stopped using the station to go to the airport. Too many kids asking "whats in the bag?" I figured it wouldn't be much longer until my laptop got jacked.... Damn shame... Meanwhile, the RTA cops I've seen are deployed mainly at Tower City where groups of them are there mainly socializing with each other. I can never understand this because Tower City is a controlled, safe environment, with turnstiles manned by RTA employees. Some cops seem to go over to W.25 to check tickets when all the kids come through there in afternoons after school. I have seen some spot ticket checks on Red Line cars occasionally. Other than that, I hardly ever see RTA cops patrolling any other station.

I don't see the problem. The elevated RR tracks which, I believe, separate Edgewater from Cudell, have no industry at this immediate location, but apt buildings and housing adjacent IIRC. As we've seen elsewhere in town, noisy freight RR tracks may not be ideal for residential development, but do not completely thwart it. The new, expensive FEB apts are a half block from the same busy freight tracks that I just mentioned. Over at the new Little Italy/Univ. Circle Red Line station, there are 2 sets of elevated freight tracks (along with the 2 Rapid tracks) and, yet, trendy Little Italy is on one side and red hot Uptown is a few blocks away on the other, with the large Intesa mixed use apts/offices/retail development planning to rise soon right next to the tracks.

Beg to differ. That area needs jobs a hell of a lot more than it needs stores or more residents. Agree on E. 116th though. Depends upon what type of jobs. If you're talking about service/white collar, I would tend to agree with you. But another plant-type or warehouse-ish factory, no. I would rather not emulate, even roughly, the factory that was torn down. But I would never thumb my nose at multi-unit housing; not in a city that has recently led the nation in population loss... This location has the bones to be a truly great walkable neighborhood. Lots of multi-unit dwellings along with some side streets along Detroit east of West Blvd, with small lots, solid housing and even some walk-up apartments. There are a number of Victorian/pre-WWI era terrace-row homes around Cudell as well; many recently rehabbed. I know there is a feeling of a crime element in parts of the area, notably south of Detroit, and around Madison, but even that seems to be declining -- I don't know, personally, because I don't live there, but a drive through of this area last summer left me with the impression the housing stock, and even some of the small commercial areas, were in better shape and it seemed like things were on the upswing. Of course north of the N-S tracks you enter the tony Edgewater area ...

Cleveland: Downtown: The Beacon
^I tend to agree. Plus, in looking at 515's current base, it's not horrible even if not great. It also appears that its glass panels could be removed/replaced if necessary... But I'm more on board with function over form for this project. An all-new apartment 18-story tower with some more people-friendly ground floor retail at 6th & Euclid will be a huge boost for the immediate area and downtown, in general.

What's a rail-head? You mean the end-points? Gathering points; major transfer stations: ie: U. Circle, Windermere, Warrensville/Van Aken (for now), etc...

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
^No question, density around stations is the ideal situation (ie: Shaker Sq). But a lot of people do travel to rail-heads.

Yeah, I was never thrilled with 515's odd glass box architecture. From the renderings I've seen, if there is redesign to the base it will be minimal. Where have you seen a rendering? Is this something you can post? Do you have any details? I would really be interested in seeing this! I know I've seen it but, for some reason, I can't put my hands on it at the moment. I'll post as soon as I can.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
To each his (or her) own. From my personal experience and observation, RTA is one of the few rail networks that offers free parking at it's rail stations. Keep in mind, also, that rapid transit in most cities is designed to collect passengers to a rail trunk line, with passengers traditionally arriving by foot, but also by streetcars which morphed into buses in the mid 1950s. Cleveland's Red Line was the 1st rapid transit in this country to heavily rely on cars/parking. Some older systems, like Chicago's L, have a few parking lots at the ends of a few lines, but parking is minimal on such systems. All this means that a lot of people are not within a 10 minute walk of rail stations, even in cities with great ones like Chicago or Washington... even NYC has tons of bus transfers in certain areas. The important aspect is that trains deliver you within reasonable walking distance of your destination, and given that the core party/entertainment areas are clustered at or near RTA rail stations, RTA seems to deliver on that score.

^I also think West Blvd-Cudell has a lot of potential, too. It's surrounded by and accessible to a large population and is fed well by the No. 26 bus coming from Edgewater/Lakewood. I wish that nearby recently cleared Trinity factory site could be redeveloped for more than the light industrial development planned. Why not mixed use retail/apts? Seems like this could be yet another lost opportunity for TOD. ... and let's not even talk about my favorite whipping boy: E. 116, one of the biggest wasted TOD opportunities in the entire RTA system.

Does the train have to come to your door or block for it to be accessible? And if not, might as well drive, strain the car, deal with traffic (downtown) and pay oodles for parking... I hear this in Cleveland more than I do other cities. I also disagree that places like Edgewater and Cleveland Hts. are inaccessible to rail, with most of Edgewater, and much of lower Cleve Heights walkable to Red and Green Line stations, respectively. And driving to these stations is little more than a 5 minute drive, if that much. One good trend that I see bucking this mentality is the growing number of Millenials who are using trains to hang out in Ohio City. I've talked to a number who say they drive into Brookpark and ride the Red Line in.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
The 3 core entertainment/party areas in/near downtown: E. 4/WHD (plus 5 points/Gateway), FEB and Ohio City, are packed with people on weekend nights. And all these areas are convenient to rail. Univ. Circle-Uptown/Little Italy is not quite there, but is growing. But we're playing the chicken and egg game: RTA: "There's not enough patronage to justify the time extension on weekends because everybody's driving." The Public: "We have to drive because RTA's not providing the late-night service." ... and yada, yada, yada... the beat goes on.

^This again puzzles me as to why pols in affected neighborhoods and cities (E. Cleve, Collinwood, Euclid) have been so silent. If it wasn't for you making (positive) noise, RTA pretty much does what it wants without anyone questioning. Damn shame.

Cincinnati Streetcar Operating hours have been set by the transportation committee. Streetcar operating hours: Sun 9A-11P Mon-Thur 6:30A-12A Fri 6:30A-1A Sat 8A-1a Streetcar frequency: 15 minute base (non-peak) 12 minute peak Mon-Fri 11A-7P Cincinnati's planned streetcar schedule is better than Cleveland's RTA Rapid schedule in that, at least on the weekend, Cincy has the good sense to run service till 1a while RTA stubbornly shuts down at 12a. Many rapid transit cities run much later on weekends. The Washington, D.C. Metro runs to 3a on Friday and Saturdays, will Philly's SEPTA runs the Broad Street subway and Market-Frankfort el all night on weekend nights. Whenever I bring this up, RTA declines to explain this policy.

Non-Ohio Transit News & Discussion
I think Indy is ready for light rail. The strong and growing downtown is seeing lots of urban infill on empty lots, and a starter line would be successful along a main spine of the city. I also sense recent political shifts that are leaning more progressive. It could be the next Detroit or Cincinnati in regards to light rail. BRT does not lead to the same types of long-term investment potential as fixed rail. I think in most cases, rail is always the better way to go to promote urban infill. I agree, C-Dawg, but unfortunately right-wingers have converted LRT talk to a total system of BRT. While there can be a place for BRT on 1 or 2 lines in a city to supplement it's rail system, it's pretty obvious BRT has become a tool for many conservatives to "save money" while delivering a system with far less positive impact. Indianapolis is an example of how NOT to build an effective transit network. The below 2014 link reflects the article KJP posted about the right-wing phobia re mass transit. http://www.urbanindy.com/2014/01/29/next-train-going-nowhere/

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Maybe not, accept for the separate fact that Mo's play has dropped off considerably also, as the article notes. This, on top of the fact that he showed up late, just an hour before the Orlando game, Saturday, which isn't like Mo. I, like you, really do hope this is much ado about nothing ... I was, and am, thrilled the Cavs were able to snag (relatively cheaply) a highly-capable point guard of Mo's caliber to help relieve Kyrie. While Delly, now Kyrie's backup, is the superior defender (between all 3 point guards, actually, including Kyrie) and has picked up his offensive game, I feel fairly comfortable predicting that Delly, throughout his career, will never sniff the 52 points that Mo bombed on Indiana last season -- hell, Delly may never reach even half that total (I believe his career best is the crucial 21 he scored in the close-out Chicago playoff game last season). Mo is a talented scorer; we know this from his 1st tour with the Cavs, but we need his head to be right. Contrast James Jones, who goes several games as a Coach's DNP. And yet, when his number is called, he always comes in and gives it his all, even if his oft-deadly 3-pointers are not dropping. He never sulks which is why he's earned the nickname "Champ" and is much beloved by his teammates. Let's hope Mo can follow Champ's sterling example.
