Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I wish RTA could keep the 10-min rush hour intervals for the East Side Red Line because of the new UC-Little Italy station which should draw a lot more passengers, especially after Intesa is built.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I was thrilled about OUR SHOT yesterday and that fact we stole home court back, but we still didn't wrap this series and wrapping it still won't be easy. Chicago has already won on our floor. Also, if anyone had told me that Kyrie was limping to the point of ineffectiveness without Love and a hobbled Shumpert and we would still win, I'd had put that person on a breathalyzer. I hope Blatt realizes that our slim path to victory in this series calls for the Thompson-Mozgov pairing, esp when Rose and Butler are on the floor. It was these guys who presented the rim fortress that disrupted Chicago's offense to no end -- I believe we forced them into 5 24-second vios with T-M on the floor, and clearly it was this frontcourt that shutdown the Bulls and allowed us to overcome the late 3rd quarter 11-point lead and take command into the final minutes (until LeBron started jacking 3s and turning the ball over to make it close at the end)... If we take care of business tomorrow, then I'll breathe easier because then we'll have 2 games to win 1 with the final game at the Q, but until then ...

I've Kyrie is hampered tomorrow like he obviously was yesterday, we're toast. If he's 75% normal Kyrie, we could survive. Both of the losses were there for the taking, but we also need LeBron to protect the ball better. He was assertive, but his sloppy passing along with those Butler poke-aways killed us. He did a ton to get us to the brink in the 4th, but the missed layup that would have given us the lead was huge.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
LeBron's ball handling is a concern. Just like in Monday's loss, he had a key turnover and a critical blown layup in the final minute. Kyrie was obviously hobbled, and it negatively impacted his explosiveness to the hole as well as his defense. I don't recall Kyrie making a single layup all night. Major kudos, though, to the non-stars. Tristan (who is actually a star in his own right) was gigantic again on the boards and on D and scored some big points (but as somebody noted, when Tristan scores as much as Kyrie, you know things are out of kilter); the much-criticized Delly hit buckets and assists at critical times to keep the good ship Cavalier afloat tonight, just as he did Wednesday, when Chicago's furious run seriously cut in to our big lead; JR, what can you say? He hit crucial 3s when we needed them, including the one that we all thought might send it into OT; once again JR had big D stops too; and Mozgov was back to looking Mozgovy tonight -- with well timed athletic alley-oops; major blocked shots plus plenty of those rim scare-aways that have become his signature. ... If only we'd gotten something from injured Kyrie, and LeBron was more sure of himself...Overall in this series, Butler has gotten the best of LeBron in terms of big shots and big defensive plays. And Butler's steals of been back-breakers (like his steal in the 3rd quarter Monday turned a 51-51 tie into a Chicago 15 point run which put them in control for the rest of the game) This shouldn't be: Butler's obviously very, very good and recently recognized as the Most Improved Player ... But LeBron's the best in the game, and one of the best in history. Let's hope the scowl and the swagger of Game 2 are back on Sunday, and LeBron wins one for the team ... and for Gloria on Mother's Day.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
What a disgusting scoundrel; I hope the put him in the hole for the rest of his life till he rots there... As disgusted as I am with the Cleveland Police these days, I'll give them kudos for staying on the hunt and finally arresting this suspect. I'll be interested to find out the particulars as to why (at least in this fool's twisted mind) he did this.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Pau Gasol is a prototypical soft Euro player (as opposed to his against-type brother Marc who is a tough, hard-nosed center). Tristan fought through screens and we bumped Pau around all last night and put a hand in his face and, as a result, he only had 11 quiet points. Barkley and others believe Chicago mailed it in content with stealing Game 1 and that the Bulls will be ready tomorrow night. We'll see. I think the difference was LeBron-- Monday, he was tentative and not-decisive in his passing, dribbling and shooting. He was not assertive with other teammates either in words or body language. Last night was the OLD LEBRON... I knew from the 1st few possessions, when THE SCOWL was back, Chicago had much to be worried about. Even though he yelled at Tristan on missing those Rose-Gasol high pick 'n rolls on Monday, he thoroughly chewed out Mozgov in the 3rd quarter last night; Blatt yanked the pout-y big man and he never returned to the lineup. Obviously we need Timo to step up -- he's struggled a lot in the playoffs -- but more importantly when our leader is totally engaged, there are few teams that can beat us. in fact, there is only 1 player in the NBA who can stop LeBron .... and that's LeBron.

Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
Did anybody see "Cleveland Abduction" on Lifetime on Saturday? I thought it was raw, realistic and hard to watch -- great performances, especially Raymond Cruz, who effectively depicted monster Ariel Castro -- Emmy caliber stuff imho... And aside from the obvious horror of the story, it definitely was filmed on Cleveland streets -- with snippets of University Circle (at the Lagoon, although weirdly ignoring the spectacular Art Museum that crowns it), Edgewater Park, and had a distinct Cleveland, especially West Side Cleveland, feel in the housing, neighborhoods and commercial districts. And apparently (I didn't follow the production of this project) the courtroom scene was filmed in an actual Justice Center courtroom. All in all it was well done-- better than I expected. And as horrible as the subject matter was, in the end it was positive -- not just for the obvious extreme courage and heroics of the 3 women, but the ultimate humanity of the City and her people for keeping the hunt for the women alive all those years and also in the City's embracing them thoroughly once they escaped. In particular, the scene where the lady cop marches scared, shell-shocked (and visually impaired-- he smashed her glasses the day he abducted her) Michelle down Castro's long horrible stairs into daylight and freedom, was a keeper.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
^Very nice. The immediate area around 5700 Detroit has a nice density to it and Templin Bradley will only add to it. It would be great if, some day, the strip of D-S vibrancy can stretch all the way from here east to Hingetown and west through Gordon Sq... It's almost there, but not quite yet.

Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
This looks really nice... Google Street Views reveals that this particular building was built either in/or between 1892 and 1896. It's part of an interesting, in-tact group of historic storefront blocks including the Fridrich Bicycle store... Fridrich is obviously a local institution and resource, but I sure wish it's building were spiffed up a bit because that last time I was by there it looked pretty raggedy.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
The Little Train that Could survives again!! I sure hope INDOT is serious in it's negations with Amtrak for a long-term solution for this train. As we know, the 1-round-trip-per-day on such a short route between 2 major metro areas -- with a large State U like Purdue in between, is the barest of minimum services that, hopefully, will be expanded and, then, extended to the Louisville, Cincy routes you mentioned earlier.

Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
^Unfortunately, this was the sign of the times (late 1940s through the 70s) and a lot of cities did this. The nation was hot to become "modern" in every facet and the mindset was that historic = old and old timey and wasn't worth protecting. By the 1980s the concept of historic preservation began taking hold--- that this 'new' nation actually did have buildings and artifacts worth protecting. We're very fortunate that this Schofield gem only was facade-d as opposed to meeting the wrecking ball.

... and I give Joe big props for consistently speaking out for more State transit funding. Ohio is abysmal on that issue and Joe's voice should be heard.

Cleveland: North Coast Transportation Center
I'm big supporter of the NCTC generally, but it makes far more sense for it to be located west of E. 9th adjacent to the Convention Center. Placing it to the east of 9th Street, at Muni Lot, would put it in no-man's land at the fringes of downtown several blocks away from the relevant activity centers. Of course there would be plenty of parking at Muni Lot, which seems to be the most important thing to too many leaders. It's nice that the NCTC is even being discussed, because I had taken it for dead, but a far more up-front aggressive stance by local transportation authorities would have probably landed the NCTC in front of the Convention Center where it belongs... Obviously RTA can't foot the NCTC bill alone; it will take a collaborative effort with probably a substantial State and/or Federal match. However RTA is the primary public transportation agency in the region (and that includes LakeTran, Greyhound, Megabus, Akron RTA, PARTA, NOACA, etc), which gives Joe Calabrese the major bully pulpit to advocate for transit issues. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to use it very often to stump for important transit innovations like NCTC. Had he really been vocal about this -- as he was regarding the Public Square rehab -- this project probably would have been developed properly and in the right place. It's the kind of cooperative advocacy and leadership Chris Ronayne has shown in University Circle and, as you can see, the results there have been stunning... Maybe you heard something I didn't, but I sure haven't heard much of anything from Joe C until very recently regarding NCTC.... Instead, until the Pedestrian Bridge was recently postponed and people finally started discussing NCTC, NCTC had been almost completely ignored by public officials and the PD, and that's what pisses me off.

Cleveland: North Coast Transportation Center
If Tober had stayed, true we'd have more rail services by now. But GCRTA would be in FTA receivership and run by a federally appointed trustee. Point is, Tober isn't here. Calabrese is here, and he's a huge supporter of the intermodal hub. So let's work with what we have organizationally and financially. Your point about FTA receivership is pure conjecture. Clearly you didn't like Tober while I admired him. ... I'm glad Calabrese supports the NCTC, but I don't see him being as proactive as he could have been -- and I'm talking about the NCTC as well as a connector to the CC -- like Tober certainly was about the walkway to Gateway (now named for him) that was a key element in saving Gateway; getting it over the hump for pols and voters.... You're entitled to your opinion, while I'm entitled to mine.

Cleveland: North Coast Transportation Center
If Ron Tober had been RTA's GM for the past few years, the NCTC (probably with commuter rail) and the connection to the Convention Center would have been built. If Joe Calabrese had been RTA's GM in the early 90s, there would never have been a proposal to connect Gateway with an underground walkway from Tower City, meaning that Gateway likely would not have been built with the Cavs still playing out in Richfield, Summit County -- and the Indians? who knows if they'd even still be in Cleveland. Funny how that works.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Nets tie Atlanta 2-2, which is amazing. If Hollins can keep Williams interested and keep feeding Lopez in the paint, the Nets could upset Atlanta, which has size issues with Brooklyn, the Cavs and a lot of teams. If the Nets could take out the Hawks it would make the Cavs' path to the Larry O'Brien that much easier. Meanwhile there's much angst in the Windy City -- much of it, surprisingly, directed at Derrick Rose -- because of the Bulls' inability to close out the banged-up Bucks. And if Milwaukee hadn't choked away Game 3, they would be ahead 3-2. Still, if they force a Game 7, all bets are off.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
The NBA really screwed Cleveland with the JR decision. Meanwhile, Olynyk should get 5 games next season, at least. To hell with all the nicey-nice talk from defenders of Boston. Olynyk meant to hurt Kevin, it's patently obvious. He wasn't going for the ball but since he had Love's arm, he made sure he was going to wrench it out of its socket. Boston was beaten and they could have lost with honor and hope for a bright future. No, they decide to go negative. There was clearly a 'hit' out for our stars, from LeBron to Kyrie to Love. And Kevin had a big target on his back since he delivered the dagger in Game 3 and skipped around the court in Boston... they were going to make him, and the Cavs, pay. I hate Boston now more than I ever have ... and that's saying something!

Cleveland: North Coast Transportation Center
^Good points 327... I was in Philly much of this past winter, which was often as brutal and bitter as Cleveland's. Meanwhile, they held major annual exhibits like their Auto Show and Flower Show, and they were packed with people coming into town on the trains and walking through the warm, temp-controlled rail station connection directly into the Convention Center... SEPTA even decorated the adjacent Jefferson (formerly Market East) train station in balloons, bunting and other decorations welcoming them to the Convention Center exhibits. I think the failure to connect our CC to our rail line just feeds planner's thesis that the Waterfront Line is useless and never should have been built, a wholly negative approach, instead of using it as a catalyst for growth and development. At least FEB gives me some hope. ... oh yeah, Philly doesn't have an IX Center stuck out in the middle of nowhere sucking major exhibits away from downtown like we do. Ugh!
