from In the Wake of the Butcher: Cleveland's Torso Murders By James Jessen Badal (pg. 28-9) ""a sixty-foot slope on the south side of kingsbury run where short stretches of both east 49th and East 50th meet the gully. Neighborhood Youngsters used the steep hill for sled riding during the winter. (The terrain has been altered since then. Part of Jackass Hill has been cut away, and only one lone house remains on the small stretch of East 49th just of Praha Avenue. It remains a remarkably isolated region, and it is difficult to believe that such an empty and desolate place could exist in the midst of a large city." East 49th near Praha no longer exists in 2013; perhaps it did in 2001, when the book was written?

Since you offered a guess, mine is that it's largely split between state lines and Toledo media and fans would be cavs. I'm basing it on the NFL team allegiances, which was analyzed by Facebook, http://deadspin.com/5979970/facebook-data-provides-the-most-accurate-nfl-fandom-map-ever-created and Another quick analysis, compare mentions of them in their local media. I did this with the toledo blade, surprisingly, there were more mentions on toledoblade.com (thanks to google site search) of pistons AND "detroit pistons" than cavaliers and "cleveland cavaliers" or just "cavs")

Cleveland: East Side Neighborhood Development
A couple updates... I hope to continue providing more as I'm spending a lot of time in the often 'forgotten' East Side neighborhoods. - Greater Cleveland Food Bank is expanding at their current location, south waterloo, just east of 152nd. They're adding additional storage space for freezers and produce. project will be done in late spring 2014. they started digging out for the foundation and laying the gas line in october or november. - League Park construction was coming along. 66th north of lexington was closed for construction. - orlando bakery is expanding at its current location. No idea what the in the expanded space, it's a taller building, looks to be high enough for 2 stories. EDIT: (1/9/2014): Drove by there today, the brick facade and large windows definitely suggest that it's office space. Pictures forthcoming. Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Question: Why does the #16 (and my co-worker says the #2 as well) divert 2 blocks from East 55th (between Euclid and Chester) to East 59th Street? http://riderta.com/routes/16 I first thought it was because at that section of road East 55th is 2 lanes each direction and there is no dedicated turning lane onto Euclid but then I thought the bus would be able to stop to the north of Euclid... For what it's worth then, google maps is incorrect because it has a bus stop on the southeast corner of chester and 55th (requires you to be zoomed in quite a bit)(RTA, I'm not sure of your responsibility, if any, to notify googlemaps of changes to your routes, but just an FYI in case people get confused).

Duck Island (Cleveland)
I'm starting to look for a place (1BR) to rent for the near future and would love to find something in Duck island... I've been occasionally looking on CL for the past month or so but I have found just 1 listing (which is for a house that will likely be demo'ed in the Brickman devel, it's on west 20th, north of lorain). Is a budget of $600 for anything in that area realistic?! Any leads or other places to look!? I'm fine with something smaller, less up to date, or with fewer amenities [no AC, no dishwasher, etc] at a place given my location and budget.

Noticed another demolition this week, the northeast corner of East 55th and Luther (about 100 feet from the actual corner, on Luther ave, Northside), there had been a church there previously.

Cleveland: East Side Neighborhood Development
Sooo... back on topic... I'm spending a lot of time driving through Central and on East 55th w/ the new job. There's a small building being built on the west side of East 55th at Hawthorne Avenue. No basement, I saw them pour concrete and didn't dig up much of a foundation. Any idea of what it is ? Looks to be the size of a fast food place, but I'd be surprised if it is, the concrete ground-pour looks to be less than 50 feet from the curb.

Coworking Spaces in CLE?
Yeah, unfortunately, the cleveland co-working space is pretty sparse as far as I know. There was the cowork cleveland (correct name?) that you referenced above which closed in '12. IMHO, they were a little too pricey. There's also an informal one organized by daniel dudley - http://www.lakework.co/ - although that's been on hiatus since July - but read that page, there appears to be a couple other leads there and he'd know more information.

Not so fast.... At first glance, perhaps, particularly near WSM. There's still several blocks of the edge of Ohio City north of Lorain (44,45th) as well as many blocks south of Lorain that are riddled with empty lots and houses that would need to be renovated before attracting rents of >$500/1BRs.

Ohio Highway Patrol
Except for major holidays, you never see state troopers in Greater Cleveland. BTW, that video of all the trucks hitting the railroad bridge was shot in Raleigh, NC where stupid drivers must be everywhere! This is no longer true--I see them out just about every weekend. The other day they were in Bratenhal (must have given the local guys the day off--for once!). I've also seen them just south of the 71/90 split off the innerbelt bridge. I would say this no longer true as well. I've driven on 176 (Jennings freeway) a few times a week for the past 8-9 years... You'd see a cop (whether city or trooper) maybe once every 6 months... In the past 18 months or so, I see a city or even a state highway patrol now about once a week. Secondly, whenever I swear whenever I drive 480west (once every couple weeks) there's a state highway patrol pulling over a semi over on the bridge over ridge road, particularly during weekdays between 9-5.

Your mentioning of neighborhood crime made me curious to check out how my neighborhood - old brooklyn was doing. For me, It felt quieter this summer compared to past summers (09-12). The crime stats of the past 90 days backed my assumption: that there would be a lot more crime west, than east, of Broadview. It's quite a stark difference. http://i.imgur.com/UyrNx5t.jpg (you can't see broadview on the map, because it is covered by the markers... it is street running north/south, just to the east of the brooklyn heights cemetery. Even growing up and visiting my friends who lived off Pearl and state as an adolescent, I could tell that part of OB (west of Broadview) was a lot less stable and felt less safe than the part to the east of broadview (where I lived growing up and moved back 4 years ago) simple things like hearing fighting/screaming in houses as while you ride your bike past, teens starting fights with you without any provocation, find broken bottles in the street.

Drove through Broadway for first time in a year or 2: The dollar tree store is fully built, neon sign is up, parking lot is paved but the landscaping needs to be done. Looks like it should open relatively soon.

Another thread that likely had a few questions/answers wiped out in the crash... here's a new question: What's the status and short history of a very large park on Garden Valley ? It consists of several ball diamonds I drove by it in the fall and it looked to be quite abandoned, a very large space. Why was it closed ? Any interesting stories besides my likely theory that it was simply closed as a result of continued population loss ? In a nutshell, it's an easy way for them to earn revenue. With their city govts budgets being cut, they'll likely keep any revenue sources they can get and charge you. I completely disagree with those actions. What may be more important for you, imho, is the license of what you can do with this data (whether you can modify at all, for personal use, for corporate use i.e. you can incorporate into a map you make for sale, etc) For what it's worth, Cuyahoga (Cleveland's county) is available to the public and free, although their licensing is left to be desired (I thought they had a more liberal use license, but it's been several months since I last checked until minutes ago - http://gis.cuyahogacounty.us/cuyahogaplanning/faces/CuyahogaPlanning.jspx There was also a really important ohio supreme court case regarding access and cost to spatial data, i'll see if i can find it, decision was made in april or may.

What Mass Transit Systems Have You Ridden?
Rail: SEPTA (Philly) NYC Boston Amtrak (OR, MI, IN, OH, IL) Portland - gorgeous, great service, ran often (except at night... Chose to walk instead of waiting 35-40 minutes for a PDX bus, at 11p on a friday night) - used it 6-7 times in Oct. - bought day passes at kiosks that were curbside, NO waiting for people paying on the bus. Cleveland - only 2 or 3 times (gasp!) Chicago - the L Madrid (doesn't really count, only once, to/fro airport to downtown during a layover) Bus: Cleveland (don't live near the rapid, so if I take RTA, it's the bus) Portland (just rode it for several days for the time in Oct) Dakar

Cleveland's Tower City Center - declining or realigning to its market?
While those factors you mentioned had an effect, I think the 2 biggest ones are: A] the continued proliferation of other (competing) malls/shopping centers in NEO. I'm really interested to know how many national stores/chains/tenants in NEO were exclusive to Tower City, before competitors like South Park, Legacy Village, and Crocker Park opened. Also, other older malls in NEO were competing with Tower City, so they too were also trying to lure then-tower city exclusive tenants B] The Internet. Although it didn't necessarily kill TC in the 90s, the increase of people buying products online certainly decreased the overall amount of shoppers and $ spent in all malls. (I'm going with the assumption that malls are a zero sum game. If a new mall opens, revenues generated there are generally going to be taken from other malls, as those customers go to the new one). (RE: htsguy, I don't mind talking about it again... I'm a youngin' and don't really remember a vibrant tower city.)
