#48: <img src="http://i.imgur.com/rq9Tg.png" alt="" title="Hosted by imgur.com" /> I don't know anything about the building itself; I wonder about its origin. Here's a bonus, I miss this game ! #49: <img src="http://i.imgur.com/5zWxT.png" alt="" title="Hosted by imgur.com" /> Hint: one of these is on the west side (of the river) and one is east.

Cleveland: Best Kept Secrets!
It looks to me as if the remaining houses on the other streets were built in the same era (early 1900s). It's just that the other streets seem to have more common wood-frame houses that are a dime a dozen in Cleveland, whereas Newton Ave. has craftsman bungalows, which people were more likely to want to preserve. I just biked there yesterday morning. The housing stock on Newton (bungelows densely packed together less than 20 feet from the curb) is unique to the neighborhood. As Etheostoma Caeruleum said, the rest of Hough is mostly (which has a lot of green space, probably the most I've seen in any neighborhood in the city) is apartment-style [3 floor] public housing (prominent in the late 20th cent) and older single lot colonials.

Cleveland Googlemaps Scavenger Hunt
Only been a couple hours but it's not in any of those 4 areas. Broadway/Aetna would be the most near out of those 4. Here's the answer to #41 which was insanely difficult. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=2797+east+90,+cleveland+ohio&aq=&sll=41.483762,-81.624781&sspn=0.003593,0.009645&gl=us&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=2797+E+90th+St,+Cleveland,+Ohio+44104&ll=41.482449,-81.625793&spn=0.007105,0.01929&t=h&z=14&output=embed

Favorite City Street Names?
Go out there at night sometime, it's a blast! Personally I like most street names in the older neighborhoods. Around me in the OB there is Behrwald, Wichita, Gifford, Ardmore, Bucyrus, and Woburn. Now those are manly, confident names. Those are names that go on battleships! On the other hand, new sprawlburb neighborhoods have THE worst street names. Who really wants to live on Misty Lake Rd? Willow Wood Dr? Pepperwood Ct? Those are flavors of Yankee Candles. +1 originaljbw. haha ! James Howard Kunstler once remarked that the names for sprawling suburban streets are usually from what they displaced. Somewhere between Cleveland and Kalamazoo (I think on the Ohio Turnpike) there's a bridge above the freeway named Fangboner road.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
There is already at least one on campus (I think maybe there's 4, if I remember correctly from the presentation). As the presentation went, a rep from the Indians and the one of the leads of the first wind turbine at CSU ran into each other at an event and things went from there. The vortex-like design for the 36 ft turbine is different than the one(s) at CSU and this one will produce more electricity although the total energy produced is very negligible. The presenters admitted it is more an educational and promotional piece (the Indians received a lot of press for their solar panels) than anything else. On the plus side, they'll become the first team in the MLB to have one at their stadium. IMHO, I have no problem with it, it's visible but not intrusive and even smaller than the light poles that are near it.

Cleveland Neighborhood Map
It is not, that little dot is Larchmere. A larger copy of the map can be seen at http://skorasaurus.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/version4-2-final_2011_07_22-cnm.png MTS, I'd love to hear your 2 cents on Buckeye/Shaker. =) Is Buckeye-Shaker one neighborhood ? Sounding ignorant, but is it often called that by residents and stakeholders ? I drive through the area weekly; Shaker Square and Buckeye are appear to be branded as two different entities. For example, I haven't seen any businesses or churches in the general area named Shaker/Buckeye; but I think there may be a couple named Buckeye (and Buckeye Plaza). I'll be the first to admit that I am not very familiar with the area but Is Larchmere just a part of the Buckeye-Shaker Neigbhorhood ? If so, perhaps it and Shaker Square are subneighborhoods within the Buckeye-Shaker neighborhood.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Although I was only there only once, that's a small hit to the downtown scene. On the other hand, there were about 4 other sports bars [panini's, winking lizard, nick's, harry buffalo, and cleats] within a 2-3 block radius of there; but I don't know of anyone else who offers virtual golf.. According to their website, they were owned by K&D, who also owns[ed] Ponte Vecchio, and Zinc. Wonder if K&D is restructuring or going out of business ?

Cleveland: Basketball Courts
Not sure if they're safe (most here on the board wouldn't consider it to be very safe), but I usually see a lot of games going on at Luke Easter Park's Courts (on MLK boulevard, just north of Kinsman) on Sunday afternoons. I've also heard there's pretty good competition at the Multiplex (indoor) in Warrensville Heights, http://www.multiplexohio.com/index.htm

Kalamazoo, Michigan
awww, this thread made me nostalgic ! I lived in Kalmazoo (except for the summers) for 3.5 years in college. =) Great pictures of downtown Kalamazoo, you definitely focused on the beautiful parts. As for Bell's, yes, it is a homey building (and the facility itself is quite small - it consists of the Bell's restaurant, a store with beer and homebrewing supplies and the beautiful beer garden building the building ; the actual brewery is in Comstock, a few miles down the road from the brewery shown in the picture). If you don't mind, I found a couple photos of downtown in my collection. As Robert Pence also mentioned, this is the downtown pedestrian Mall. It's a one way street with minimal slow traffic (no more than 10-15mph, IIRC). During the late 2000s, it was relatively stable in vibrancy although its tenants changed. There was a couple fancy restaurants, a couple daytime offices (PNC and another bank were the largest employers on the block, I believe), shoe repair, thrift store, old-time candy store, sub shop, a sports apparel shop, and a few other places. Some retail businesses, had closed, like a memorable mom and pop bookstore, in 2006, and as far as I know, as did the local food co-op in 09 or 10, (a great place, brought a lot of traffic to the street), but I heard the food co-op opened back up [although about 3/4 a mile away from their downtown location) within the past year. While I was there, a rock climbing gym. Nonetheless, there usually was minimal traffic and activity (pedestrian or automobile) after 6 or 7pm at night and it was very well maintained.

Cleveland Neighborhood Map
I'm rolling out an update in the coming days but I'd like your advice for the borders of Asiatown and st. Clair-Superior. According to the St. Clair-Superior CDC, their borders are "St. Clair Superior Development Corporation service area extends from East 30th Street on the Western Boundary to Martin Luther King Boulevard as the Eastern Boundary, South to Superior and Payne Avenues and North to the Lake" http://www.stclairsuperior.org/ABOUT_US.neighborhood.html The Asiatown website defines its own borders as "East 30th to East 40th Streets between St. Clair and Payne Avenues." http://www.asiatowncleveland.com/current.asp According to those two self-definitions, Asiatown is completely within the St.Clair-Superior neighborhood. Personally, I always thought Asiatown as a distinct neighborhood separate from St.Clair-Superior. I also didn't know a CDC serviced that area of 'st. clair-superior' or I wonder if that's the name its stakeholders (residents, business owners, community leaders - elected or unelected, and others) use to self-identify their neighborhood and what area(s) do they define to be their neighborhood. Anyone on the boards who spends a lot of time in those areas would like to share their experiences ? What do you believe Asiatown and St.Clair-Superior to be ? Do you call the neighborhood St.Clair-Superior ?

Cleveland: Warehouse District: Development and News
Couldn't agree more. Although I'd like to see one downtown, the demand for cocktail lounges in WD or downtown, but all of Cleveland and Northeast Ohio, isn't there. :/ Besides the Velvet Tango Room (in Ohio City), what other ones are there ? Dragonfly, Speakeasy [the basement bar of bar cento, only open on weekends], and one downtown, Kevin's Martini Bar (inside Pickwick and Frolic/Hilarities, same owners I would assume) but I don't think it's open on a regular basis (I was there once a few months ago for a private event). Have there been recent attempts to create one ? (Executive Lounge on Bolivar at 12 or 13th), (The View on Prospect) ? /end semi-derail

Cleveland Neighborhood Map
Although important, SPAs are just one influence in the name of a Cleveland neighborhood. Regardless, I think that the name changes proposed in the article aren't good. At the end of the article, Old Brooklyn was mentioned to possible change to 'South Brooklyn.' That proposed change is asinine and wouldn't benefit the neighborhood. Old Brooklyn, as a name, has been perpetuated in its use by residents and stakeholders in the neighborhood for over 2 decades. As mentioned in the article, the historical significance of 'South Brooklyn' is very limited and is very distant, last formally used in 1905. Currently, the only business or entity in the area that refers to the area as South Brooklyn is the Cleveland Public Library's South Brooklyn Branch, located on the corner of State and Pearl. As an Old Brooklyn resident, the change wouldn't benefit the neighborhood.
