North side of Prospect, 3659. They're right between 2 parking lots, if I remember correctly. I saw them for the first time last week, they're really cute !
  2. It's surrounded by a lot of industry and I think that hurts it (for a prospects of gentrification) although I realize that as I write this, Tremont negates that point. SV has some small pockets of old building stock [old Hruby Conservatory of Music for one], specifically right around 55th and Broadway and parts of Fleet Ave. Although it feels old hat, it was hit pretty hard by the foreclosure epidemic and many residential blocks Also, it's not far from the Towpath Trail and Metroparks, although you have to go through a bit of industry (in addition to Cuyahoga Heights and Newburgh Hts) to reach it. With the addition of the Morgana Run Trail (a railtrack that had been converted into a paved bike trail) and the Golf Course, SVD (the development corp. of Slavic Village) and other stakeholders are really trying to brand the neighborhood as 'active living' and being outdoorsy. All in all, there's few characteristics of gentrification (yuppies, business growth, tightening of housing stock) in many parts of the gentrifying parts of Cleveland: Tremont, DS, and Ohio City, so I doubt that it will reach Slavic Village in the near future (10-15 years). :/

Are you looking for store ideas ? There's Henninger's. It's on Ridge in Parma, north of Parma Theatre. It's been over 5 years ago since I've been past that area, so, who knows if it's still there. :-D
  5. The only brick allies in downtown that I know of is Crawford Court (between e4 and e2), 43rd and payne [that's stretching to considered that downtown, to say the least], and Erie and Sumner[?] by Erie Cemetery.... wait, erie court ? pretty sure it's not erie court, erie court has grass between the curb and brick wall.
  6. I haven't seen it posted it yet, but Save Lower Prospect Avenue is continuing their efforts through a petition to the building owners and local civic leaders (especially to Councilman Cimperman) It is available to sign physically (yesterday they were at the arts fests in UC and Gordon Square) and through http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/downtown-is-our-town/
  7. I did not; I had taken the picture. Sorry if this broke protocol. There was one earlier photo (the slavic village apts) that wasn't from google maps, so I figured as long as it was taken from street-level and displayed a large area of space, like google maps, it would be ok.
  8. Great job. It's the intersection of Barn Court and East 12th place.
  9. It's been a couple months since we last did this: #39 (I did blur out 2 identifying signs in blue).
  10. I was at a portion of the city planning commission this morning. Nothing related to the casino was on the agenda however Bob Brown mentioned that there was a meeting yesterday of about 20 (he didn't mention who was there or whether it was public) that looked over alternatives, they didn't find anything that was feasible but they're continuing to look. There's at least 1 alternative listed at the Save Lower Prospect Ave Facebook group - http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_211966452169552
  11. I'd guess: East Cleveland Lorain Parma Lakewood Cleveland Heights Eastlake Maple Heights Shaker Heights University Heights Euclid North Olmsted Willoughby Mentor Avon Chardon Rocky River Amherst Solon Strongsville Westlake Beachwood Chagrin Falls
  12. +1. IKEA stores are usually 250-350k sq. ft - http://www.columbia.edu/itc/architecture/bass/newrochelle/extra/ikea_prop.htm I would think many retailers including have sizes of ~70k sq. feet For what it's worth, Giant Eagle stores are 60-90k. http://www.gianteagle.com/about/real-estate
  13. Actually, the waitress didn't tell me this *wink*, but they were not in financial trouble at all, the offer was just really good. Couldn't get a number out of her though. I think that's the only thing on their menu I like. For everything else, they're just a more expensive Applebee's Whoa, thanks for the info. I never visited Metro, but after reading about Bar Louie (I never heard of it until now), I would rather keep Metro :(
  14. Yes, that would be me. It wasn't my only objection and it wasn't the only objection to the plan. As far as I remember, there were 3 (only!) others who had publicly expressed criticism to any portion of the plan: a rep. from the Gateway District, Anthony Coyne, and Norm Krumholz. The three of them and I had a few criticisms including: that the Stanley Building was not incorporated to the overall design of the parking garage, the aesthetics of the garage, that the parking garage will not create any pedestrian vibrancy on Prospect between Ontario and East 4th because of the parking garage will create dead space, and because of the current design, pedestrians will not want to walk from East 4th to the Casino. For what it's worth, I have most of the audio [the quality isn't very good either, but the speaking is audible] from the Rock Gaming presentation although the audio is a bit limiting because the visuals are missing. Link to audio: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17003223/2011-05-20_09-39.flac (warning, 212 MB). some remarks, points, worth noting: Bob Brown: the first view of the courthouse that is even worth seeing isn't until you're already north of the skywalk/bridge (46min into the audio). "it activates the streetscape, it really makes prospect seem like a more exciting and pedestrian friendly area....it adds to the connectivity to the area" - Rock-gaming rep. (I wonder what he's talking about.... /sarcasm). (47min). - City of cleveland will sell the gateway north garage to Rock Gaming for $21 million
  15. I have to head out really soon, but at yesterday's meeting, it was mentioned that retail [2 storefronts, adjacent] is being planned for a section of the ground level of parking garage on the southside of prospect, between ontario and e.2. However, that retail space is still going to be dead because pedestrians (for example, from east 4th) aren't going to cross 5 lanes of traffic (the 3 valet lanes and east 2nd) to access those 2 storefronts.
  16. I'm @@ the city planning meeting now. I'll speak up. len k said the project breathes connectivity to the l gateway. Any good wet to view uo on phone ?

I hope not and I'm optimistic that it won't, if I decrease the size the neighborhoods' names. The names would still be readable on a printed out copy (32inch by 25inch~). I'm playing around with different sizes and don't have a fixed size in mind yet.

Thanks everyone for your help and comments. I updated the map. An updated version is added in the first page of the post or if you don't want to scroll back, click http://skorasaurus.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/version4-1-final_2011_05_05-cnm-1290x996.png. In this version, I added Hough and renamed the Collinwood neighborhoods (as North Collinwood and Collinwood as 327 had mentioned) and updated the street data (imported from 2007 TIGER and verified and updated by myself and a few others) from Openstreetmap EDIT: Just realized that I forgot to include Ohio City in this version
  19. For my two cents, the new (vbulletin-v4) is good in theory but the execution of migrating the forum from SMF to vb4 was quite bugging: previous quotes didn't display properly, the registration issues, etc. However, I've been on message boards that use vbulletin and don't mind it. but I haven't found anything that I dislike about SMF since I became active on UO in the past few months. I'm fine with keeping it on SMF.

Proposed changes to laws requiring off-street parking for bars, restaurants, taverns, and night clubs in the City of Cleveland were approved by the City Planning Commission on April 15th. Off-street Parking Space Requirements for bars, taverns, restaurants, and cafeterias: One space for each employee + one space for each 100 square feet of floor area devoted to patron use or one for each four seats based on maximum seating capacity, whichever is greater, including floor area and seating located on outdoor dining patios on private property. Sidewalks are considered public property, thus, any patios on sidewalks are not included in the parking requirement space requirements. For Nightclubs: One space for each employee + (parking area equal to three times the gross floor area) or one parking space for each 4 seats based on maximum seating capacity, whichever is greater (including floor area and seating located on outdoor patios on private property. These recommendations will be sent to City Council where it will be later deliberated. It’s still early in the process, as Tony Coyne (City Planning Commission chair) eloquently put it: “it’s the start of the sausage making process” Current requirements for nightclubs (which were classified as ‘dance halls’ under the code] does not specify any parking for employees. Current requirements for bars and restaurants do not include any additional parking for outdoor patios on private property Personally, I haven’t decided whether to be in favor of it but I’m learning towards no. There is still a minimum amount of land that will need to be taken up by parking. This mandated parking decreases the density of buildings and businesses that makes public transportation, walking, and bicycling as more viable options. The existing off-street parking requirements can be found on http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/clevelandcodes/cco_part3_349.html, section 4 . Existing code and the revised code include one spot for each employee although there will be very few situations when every employee will be working at the same time. Fortunately, the location for the mandated parking isn’t specified. This allows the parking to be behind the buildings or in a parking garage, instead of in front of the buildings which would separate the buildings from the sidewalk and the street. I’d love to hear fellow UOers weigh in on this, especially transportation planners.
  21. My guesses :) 1. Iraq 2. Mexico 3. Burundi 4. India 5. Nepal (I had Canada but decided to switch it out with india 8-)
  22. I don't know the status of the Public Square location. I was walking through the Arcade on the way to my internship today and saw the updated storefront. Which storefront was the Indigo Bistro ? The only updated storefront was in the location of the red circle of the attached picture. The current picture shows the correct location.
  23. 503 Prospect, the southeast storefront in the Colonial Marketplace that faces Prospect is being renovated for Sushi 86. Posters of sushi rolls and the building permit, issued on April 13th, are displayed in the windows. 503 Prospect is next to the Residence Inn. I hope to add some pics later today.

Tremont was always referred to as the South Side by its residents, businesses, and other stakeholders in the neighborhood (he moved there as a child and grew up there in the late 50s and 60s). As I'm writing this, I do wonder if the neighborhood Cleveland Public School, located on Tremont Ave, always had Tremont in its name, and I forgot to ask him that. He said the use of Tremont as a name of the neighborhood didn't start until the 1980s, when the yuppies started moving in. 8shadesofgrey, great map !
  25. The sewer district is building a new pipeline/tunnel for Euclid Creek. They presented a plan for It a semi-private permanent access road (both for the tunnel construction, and for trucks of nearby industry) along with a sound barrier wall that will separate the access road with Kuhlman road - http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=41.559905,-81.589462&spn=0.003372,0.006899&t=h&z=17&output=embed was presented at today's CPC [city planning commission] meeting. I have some audio from the meeting if you're interested (I left halfway through the presentation though and it appeared that the wall/road would be approved). According to the presenter from the sewer district, trucks from the nearby industries had been using Kuhlman, a residential road, as a shortcut.
