Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Yeah the storm wasnt that bad to cause the wall collapse on its own. It was just the last straw due to probably years of lack of maintenance.

Cleveland: Demolition Watch
Seems like Thomas Coffey is the only one who deserves to be on the commission. From the article... "Thomas Coffey, an attorney and the sole Landmarks Commission member to vote against the demolition request, said the decision points to deeper, systemic problems with city ordinances meant to protect landmarks and force property owners to maintain their buildings. He views the Euclid Avenue Church of God as a case of demolition by neglect. "If the city would start enforcing its own ordinance requiring owners to take care of their property, the entire city would benefit," he said in an interview, adding "Nobody could have convinced me that voting for that demolition was the right thing to do."" And from an article months ago about the Columbia Building... Which he voted against... "Commissioner Thomas Coffey questioned the developer's representatives at length about the history of the Columbia Building and whether they considered putting the parking operation in the May Company garage across Prospect. Coffey said the current proposal was the "cheap alternative." "They have all the big guns out to support this," Coffey said. "This building does not have to come down.""

Slavic Village and Warszawa! (cleveland)
Back then it was a community. You moved to a place here where everybody still spoke the language, restaurants served the food, and families and friends from the old country lived. Generations later people became more americanized. The children no longer know the language. They ate more americanized foods. They moved away from the neighborhood. The community died, there was nothing left holding it together. Most people today dont know much about there roots or where they came from. They have ancestors from everywhere. Now they only identify by Race.

Moving to Cleveland... where to live???
From what I have heard, Prestis and Corbos (both in Little Italy) have great cannoli's. As for bike riding, Cleveland continues to get better. Downtown you are able to ride down Euclid Avenue (main street) in the Bus Only lane which gives you plenty of room and separates you a bit from traffic. An improved path is also going up on the Lorain Carnegie bridge allowing you to safely bike across the river to Ohio City and the West Side Market! As for biking along the lake, unfortunately I dont believe there are many options. I do believe you can bike on a mile or so path at Edgewater Park on the west side of Cleveland. Also beautiful, and a great ride, is riding though Shaker Heights in the summer and fall on South Park and North Park Boulevards. And although you dont pass Lake Erie, you do pass the Shaker Lakes!

When you visited here, what parts of the city did you explore? Did you stay downtown?

Moving to Cleveland... where to live???
Just to start I think that University Circle and Little Italy could be great option for you. Or Cedar Fairmount in Cleveland Heights. Not sure if you will find loft there but you should be able to find several nice apartments. These areas are all on the east side, close to the Cleveland Clinic, and are safe, active, and full of things to do. Lakewood is probably a 20 minute drive away from the Clinic. Also not sure if how many units are available if any but you might be interested in checking out the Uptown apartments. http://uptowncleveland.com/

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
How about building on the parking lot on Euclid between 668 and the City Club? Or putting the tower on top of 515 Euclid? Or converting the upper floors of the "5th Street Arcades" to apartments?? I could see the last thing happening. I think I remember the article about the Volk Building purchase mentioning the purchase setting MRN up right next to the Colonial Arcades. Why guess when you have google! From the article... "The two-story building contains just 10,000 square feet of office and retail space, but it extends MRN's interests next to the Prospect side of Colonial Marketplace, a hotel-retail complex. MRN's Block Building already abuts Colonial Marketplace on the block's opposite end on Euclid Avenue."

Also the property was owned by Horace Ford, which makes sense if you just look at the street its adjacent to.

Woops, I mixed up all of those numbers when I typed it out. I fixed the original post. Thanks for pointing out my mistake so I could correct it.

Cleveland: University Circle: Uptown (UARD)
Looking at old maps it appears there was nothing there even back to 1912. In 1898 there was a house there set back with the property as wide as it is today and extending all the way back to Bellflower. That was before Hessler Street even existed.

It looks as if that intersection already got a new streetcape if you look at the aerial compared with street view.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
It seems like an expensive project to cut a small amout of people's drive to the park down by only a couple minutes. Seems like a waste. Local residents can already bike and walk the the neighborhood. This will create a lot of traffic too and just seems like it will only hurt the neighborhood

Higbee's started in the 200 block of West Superior, moved to the other side of the street, then to Euclid at East 13th in 1910. Its flagship store then was moved to its final location in the Cleveland Union Terminal complex in 1931. SOURCE: http://ech.case.edu/cgi/article.pl?id=DDSI Perhaps you are thinking of Hotel Cleveland which was the first of the Van Sweringen's Union Terminal group of buildings to open in 1918? It preceded the demolition of all of the older buildings for the terminal group. This picture shows The Higbee Company on public square in 1907 http://www.shorpy.com/node/9820?size=_original#caption I cant seem to find out where this store fits with that history on the site.

May Co built an addition on Ontario after it purchased and absorbed Hull & Dutton, so they could enter the Cleveland Market. I have no date for this transaction. Halle's opened 1902 became a department store in 1906 William & Taylor 1907 Sterling-Linder opened on Euclid Ave. in 1909 (Previously on Superior as a Dry Goods store) Higbee's open across from Halle's in 1910 (but had been a ready to wear company, Hower & Higbee - not a department store - since the mid 1800s). We all know when they move to Public Square. However, maybe they are using the mid 1800s as a date of when the store first opened. What I'm confused with is that both you and the article mentioning it being located in playhouse square before it got lured to Public Square with the terminal tower project. There are pictures though that show Higbees being on the square before that happened. Do you know the history behind that location?

^ It started in 1860 so it could possibly be the oldest. I need to check the others dates. Edit: I did a quick search and so far none of the bigger names are older.
