  1. bUCkeye state, bitches! Cinsanity!!!
  2. Aaaand the state of Ohio breaks a record for most teams in the Sweet 16! w00t Way to go, UC, XU, OU, OSU! Better watch your back now OSU! I'm thinking UPSET in Beantown! I wonder if 2 teams from 1 city is a record. Either way, it's awesome! To cap off the season of the big brawl with a rematch of UC-XU in the championship game would be pretty epic.
  3. Who says 8 feet is ridiculous? Not Duke. Precedent says 8 feet is ridiculous. The utility companies the Business Courier interviewed say 8 feet is ridiculous. Rational thought says 8 feet is ridiculous.
  4. It may be relevant that the operating company is not actually building the infrastructure.

Do you listen to Wilco a lot in your office? Specifically, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot?
  6. It is in the Ohio Revised Code. That means the streetcar is, according to state code, both a motor vehicle and not a motor vehicle. In other words, a bunch of dusty old bullsh!t. Not a vehicle, not a motor vehicle, but perhaps a utility. Regardless of how the legalese there pans out, the fact remains that 8 feet is unprecedented and ridiculous. The city is willing to pay for 3 feet, so whether or not the city must pay (which would be a question in part answered by whether or not the streetcar is a utility) is moot. Edit: I have to wonder, though, if SORTA really counts as a "street railway company in the business of operating...", since that seems aimed at, well, businesses, and not governments.
  7. Does that mean you are supportive of a new arena? If DanB is supportive, there may actually be political will. (The B stands for "barometer".) Frankly, I am skeptical of the financial benefit of the whole thing. If a corporation would pay for it (like Nationwide apparently did in Cbus), I'd be all for it. Western & Southern would be the most likely candidates, since they are development-happy at the moment, but they probably wouldn't do it if they couldn't put it on Arch Street or over the ruins of the Anna Louise Inn. All kidding aside, the last place they would put it is west of downtown, which as I've made clear is my preference for a location.
  8. Then shouldn't it be "city-outdated-data"?
  9. But they can be honest when they say they went and checked something out...or do more than whatever they did. I don't think they're being blamed for the break-in. Maybe you missed this post: I called this in this morning- amazingly they called me back (surprisingly!) to say there was no sign of a break in. Edit: I should phrase that better. The "fail" is that the police were alerted to a specific problem in a specific location, ostensibly went to check it out, and falsely reported to OC that there was no such problem -- when apparently there was.
  10. ^ Very nice. The article basically cites the Ohio Revised Code to debunk the notion that the streetcar is a public utility, which is central to Duke's claim that the city needs to pick up the tab for all relocation work, since utility locations are prioritized on a first-come-first-served basis. (If I got that wrong, please someone correct me.) Being powered by "overhead electric trolley wires" exempts the streetcar from being a motor vehicle and both being powered by wires and running exclusively on rails exempts the streetcar from being a vehicle.

Funny, it switches depending on which computer I am using, when I use Firefox on both. Using Chrome, on the computer which goes to the UO home page in Firefox, it takes me to the forum home. And here I thought someone switched the link. Very strange. Well, it's an issue you can be aware of now. I have no idea what might cause it! (Maybe it's some obscure browser setting on my end?)
  12. Sorry if there's a more appropriate thread for this. All of a sudden, when I click "UrbanOhio.com" on a thread path e.g. UrbanOhio.com > Projects And Transportation > Transportation > Mass Transit > Topic: Cincinnati Streetcar News it actually takes me to...UrbanOhio.com...instead of the main forum page. Why not make the "Home" button do that (which still takes me to the forum home) and make the thread path base be the forum home? Or just leave them both how they were. Change is bad, mmmkay? I'm probably the only person to use the feature. But it lets me navigate back to the main forum page from the bottom of a thread, which is convenient.
  13. Megadeth? Edit: Figured it out... Megabus... but why did you call it that? :?
  14. I'm a little worried the event lawn will take too much of the crowd from Fountain Square. (I mean in general, not for a specific event.)

I think biker16 has the right angle, framing the status quo as wealth distribution. If you want to sway Republicans, speak in their language. Which is very natural here. Edit: For such a campaign, anyway. KJP's avenue through the courts is more likely to win, but also more limited in scope.
  16. I like this. I see an arena as an opportunity for a big project to extend development of OTR and Downtown west. The University Plaza idea is also not bad, and it's on the streetcar line (bonus!). Imagining condos being built in Bond Hill due to a new Cincinnati Gardens is very much wishful thinking IMO. The project has to be synergistic with its surroundings in order to spur development at all, other than maybe a hotel or two.
  17. Yeah. It's over in Covington. My friend described it best when he said: "It's like a Waffle House took a s**t on Pike St." In all seriousness, it seems this "Anchor" will be a far cry from the Covington institution that "may doze, but is closed." Is closed? What???

^ I agree. I don't like all the talk of recall. Did he actually claim that? I interpreted his move as more a rejection of public funds rather than claiming he wouldn't receive them if they were asked for.
  19. Assuming Cincy builds a new arena, I think it should go near Union Terminal.
  20. Ohio is university central. Kent, UC, OSU, OU, BGSU, Kenyon, Wooster, Antioch, Wesleyan... I'm sure I am forgetting some. I know many are small and private, but the fact is it's just hard to stick out in the region if you didn't get established in the game early on. UC, OSU, Miami, Kent, and OU pretty much have Ohio's large public school educational needs covered. Yet another large state school may be good for Cleveland, but probably would be more of a drain for Ohio overall. It's one of the problems with being a city in a state with so many cities. Cleveland happens to be the C that missed out.

We should launch an official proposal then. If it's never built, it acts as a COAST lightning rod, keeping them busy while we finish and expand the streetcar system. If it does get built, that's just a bonus. The way they attack things is pretty sweeping and not targeted. Remember?

^^ What exactly was he right about?
  23. Cincinnati and Hamilton County are ran poorly, but not for the reasons you outline. These fit the bill much more snugly: -Antequated tax code. -Outdated arena. The city misses out on several million annually that goes to Cleveland. -No dedicated bus lanes. Inexcusable off the top, but deplorable when you reflect on the lack of rail transit. -No late night buses on weekends. Cincinnati's nightlife for many is defined by proximity to a certain area, not where they would prefer to go. Northside, Hyde Park and downtown would be big winners with overnight service. Perfect for Mt. Adams and its limited parking. Agreed on all points, except maybe the arena. I'm not sure the cost of a new arena would be justified, as there are many cases where new arenas were touted as economic development tools which haven't delivered. The night buses are very important, IMO. For many, as you state, nightlife is defined by proximity. To perhaps more Cincinnatians, it's defined by drunk driving.

^^ That article Qualls recommended estimates the maximum cost of construction at $7mil (1987 dollars). That seems pretty cheap.
