  1. Found this Facebook page supporting the search for funding for the B$B "replacement": Brent Spence Bridge: The Bridge to Everywhere https://www.facebook.com/pages/Brent-Spence-Bridge-The-Bridge-to-Everywhere/134450173231800?sk=info Ironically, they link to jmeck's info site on the bridge. Ironic because jmeck is probably the most outspoken critic of the project in the Cincinnati "media". At first I thought it was going to be a page about the idiocy of the project, as the title of the group would surely be satire. Right? Right? Wrong.

edale, you remind me of this article by Aaron Renn: http://www.newgeography.com/content/001110-the-white-city
  3. ^ That would be super cool!
  4. Is there an easy way to see where the money from the Cincinnati Southern goes? (Probably someone from Cincinnati would be better suited to answer this, so it's not necessarily directed towards KJP and BuckeyeB.) Edit: Looking through some budget documents on the city webpage. So far I see this: I'll add anything else here which I find interesting. Considering the way some people go nuts about gas tax revenue being restricted to road spending, you'd think the railway revenue being used exclusively (or primarily) for rail projects would have a significant political following, right? My guess is those same people would be those most against such a proposal. I'm sure city officials would not like it either, though. I do think this is a positive (promising?) place to look. If we could come up with a plan which doesn't pull too much away from general funds, but supplies a steady stream of income for railway projects, it would be worth petitioning for a ballot initiative. With some COAST-style (but more honest) ballot language engineering, it could be worded in a way to make it sound reasonable and appealing to voters.
  5. Weird how Cincy seems to support the fine dining scene pretty well but Ctown supports its airport better (assuming UO's omniscient god of the airlines uses legit stats). I'd rather have a solid airport.
  6. ^ He's on the board, but I don't think he would initiate the idea. The connection could for sure help if more preservation savvy people on the board or otherwise involved in the organization were to approach him. It's probably not realistic, but if citizens put up enough of a stink it might shift some (heavy) gears. I don't think CPA has the balls and the Paul Wilham crowd would probably make Barrett want to tear down the buildings just to spite them. So it's a pie-in-the-sky idea. But if Barrett actually cares about the city and its long-term health, and not just the money he can make off direct tangibles, he will explore options. I'm not holding my breath. BTW - for reasons jmeck stated above, plus Barrett's status in 3CDC, you see why 3CDC is not gung-ho about the streetcar. Even though the streetcar's effects are clearly aligned with 3CDC's goals, as well as the health of the city generally.

This article is about Newt Gingrich, but I think a lot of it applies to COAST. (They are radicals, no?) http://campaign2012.washingtonexaminer.com/article/newt-gingrich-saul-alinsky-republican/338701

Ahaha, I guess the last time I hooked my a computer to a TV was in the S-Video days. I still use S-Video a lot with my tube TV and older game systems since it's the best output available for them. One problem that I've run into when using HDMI to a TV from a computer is that it can disable your ability to use any other output for audio, sticking you with the TV speakers. I built a PC for a buddy to use with the iRacing sim that wouldn't let him use the headphones for audio when it was outputting HDMI to the TV. There wasn't a setting anywhere in the video card's settings to change it. Headphones are really important for hearing the engine, other cars and the tires in iRacing. You can then use an audio out port on the TV, but that's obviously not very convenient. Might mean needing a wireless headset or something, which is yet more $$$. I don't typically use headphones for anything on a TV so I've never encountered the problem. Actually, I guess I sort of have. I don't like that my laptop's speakers stop working when I plug it into a TV. It would be cool if you could split the audio output depending on which screen a given application is running on (e.g. Netflix on TV playing through TV speakers, music player on laptop screen playing through laptop speakers). Not that I often want to listen to two audio streams at once.
  10. There has to be a reason John Schneider is silent on the issue of reaching out to streetcar supporters regarding tomorrow's meeting. I hope it's a good reason and that the reason becomes apparent. Soon.

Yeah, S-Video is pretty much obsolete at this point. When's the last time you purchased a TV, GCrites80? Most new TVs also have the old type of monitor port (SVGA I think?), which would make hooking up to an older PC (without HDMI) fairly simple. Then there are composite ports on old and new TVs which most other outputs can be converted to with a cheap cable. Overall it's a simple operation, the most likely problem would be the distance between a desktop PC and the space where you watch TV, which can be overcome like Ram23 was talking about. But some people may not wish to go through the hassle of remedying that situation. With the money saved from cutting cable, though, one could easily buy a low-end laptop (netbook) or compact desktop PC for media. If distance is a problem because you only have a desktop, purchasing a laptop/netbook is probably a good option, just to get the benefits of a portable computer. WiFi is magical! Another good option: get a tablet! Toshiba Thrives are frequently on sale and come with full-sized ports (HDMI and USB). You can take it to bed and watch movies and Youtube and stuff, too.
  12. Put them at Mercer Commons instead of one of the proposed buildings people hate so much. There's already money earmarked for those plots, it would just mean a downgrade in density. (I don't know the cost of moving vs. new construction, but the quality of materials would also be better.) Or what about making them part of the Park Haus program? Sell them for roughly the cost of relocation plus renovation. This would obviously require cooperation between W&S and 3CDC, but frankly 3CDC's involvement is probably what it would take to make relocating these realistic. I don't think W&S cares one bit to save them, and would view it as a hassle to deal with someone with much less clout than 3CDC.

^^ You should seriously consider getting a cable to hook up your computer to your TV. Especially if you have a laptop. Either way, it's not impossible to watch stuff on a monitor.

Albrecht Dürer was from Nuremberg. He had a famous painting of a hare. I suspect there's a connection. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Hare

  20. Sorry to go off-topic. Are there any surviving co-ops in Cincinnati? The best one I've ever been to is in Albany, which is (much) smaller and demographically similar to Cincy. It's huge and the variety of products is amazing. Check it out if you ever find yourself in the Hudson Valley: http://www.hwfc.com/

I used to dig that music, KJP. Then I took an arrow in the knee.
  22. Businesses have plenty of influence over city government. Not necessarily through votes, but through campaign funding and simply threatening to leave, as well as access to media. If businesses didn't have a "vote", they would not be offered so much money in incentives all the time by elected officials! Employees of city companies who do not live in the city, likewise, are represented by their employers. It is, after all, through their role as employees that they have formal ties to the city.

It's great for the price. Much better than similar beers, like Yeungling. Doesn't stack up well at all to higher priced beers. Welcome to UO, btw. I hate your avatar.
