Even when the Enquirer acknowledges CUF is not Clifton, they get the geography wrong. Lyon Street is in Clifton Heights, not University Heights. No one probably would have noticed or cared they were cited for possession, but now it's a big deal.

Thanks, jjakucyk. That's far more clear than my hasty, muddled post. KJP, I am just saying we shouldn't equate mobility to freedom, not that we shouldn't make sure everyone can afford to get places. In fact, it's largely the emphasis on mobility that has landed us in a situation where it's too expensive for many people to get where they need to go (as jjakucyk eloquently outlined).

It is, in large part, the championing of mobility which leads to the "road funding uber alles" mindset. It leads to the notion that quickly getting to more places on the map is inherently desirable, rather than locating destinations on parts of the map we can quickly get to. "Freedom," in this sense, is accessing destinations quickly, not moving about quickly to arbitrary points in space. Edit: I meant "freedom" in the alternative sense (alternative to "mobility is the essence of our freedom"). My point is that mobility is not the essence of our freedom, but rather access to the destinations we need/want to go is (at least closer to) the essence of our freedom.

^ Well said. I don't know if Dalton can do it, either, but with the limited data provided by 2 games he looks like he just might. Present times have really been a "good old days" era for Cincinnati sports. The Reds have been making the playoffs, competing for (and sometimes winning) the division pennant. The Bengals have been making the playoffs regularly, and winning their division. And the Bearcats have been competing for and winning conference titles, and going to BCS bowls (and even finished the 09-10 season ranked third nationally). But, in each of those cases, there is something leaving each team just shy of breakthrough success. It's been exciting but oh-so-frustrating! It's easy to imagine a future where each team slips back into decades of mediocrity, without any one of them winning a championship.

University of Cincinnati Bearcats Football Discussion
Really good start to what could be a fantastic four years with Gunner Kiel. I'm worried about the rest of the team, though. Especially the defense. One more chance to polish things up before facing OSU. It's absolutely imperative to beat OSU to get any national recognition this session. This is the first time since Collaros was injured that my primary concern about the Bearcats (or the Bengals, for that matter) hasn't been the quarterback.

Cincy Bike Share starts rolling Monday 5:01 p.m. EDT September 10, 2014, John Faherty (Photo: The Enquirer/Sharon Coolidge) The idea is that it will be fast and easy and save the environment and you will not need to find a parking place. The program will launch on Monday, Sept. 15, at 10:30 at a ceremony at Freedom Way and Walnut Street at the Banks. This spring, Mayor John Cranley proposed $1.1 million for the program. City Council approved the money and things got moving quickly. But the idea has been brewing for a while. Read more Woo-hoo!

^ So that one issue in Mt. Adams is what Cranley is calling a "negative reaction we're getting everywhere"? I find it weird he is so against this, since so many diverse neighborhoods are embracing it. I believe Westwood, College Hill, Walnut Hills, Madisonville, and others have signed on to the Form-Based Code. Where is the popular opposition coming from? Why is Cranley trying to manufacture it?

^ So the plan is to expand the existing DCI district to include Pendleton and Over-the-Rhine. Thus the downtown ambassadors, and whatever else comes with the current DCI program, would also be extended to those neighborhoods. Sounds like a good idea. Gets the CBD in the SID, the exclusion of which would be unfair (and was often cited as a problem with an OTR-only SID). And it gives OTR/Pendleton property owners some incentive to sign-on on top of just funding streetcar operations (which they had little incentive to do without something extra, since operations would have to be funded somehow, regardless).

The thing about German heritage is that it was attacked for half a century or more from 1917 up beyond the 1940s. It's largely been lost in Cincinnati and much of the country, whereas people have been allowed to be proud of, honor, and preserve other ethnic heritages (e.g. Italian). Over-the-Rhine is a good symbol of that, even though other things were also at work (i.e. slowing of immigration and white flight). But there's nothing inauthentic with hyping up its German roots, and in fact it's a good opportunity to tell the story of the eraser that was taken to the German-American chalkboard. One way to do that would be to (re)introduce honorary street names for the streets whose names were changed.
