Cincinnati: Downtown: 21c Hotel (Metropole Building Redevlopment)
As far as postmodern architecture goes (I think that's the correct term), the CAC is pretty good. It's not very flamboyant, the scale is appropriate, and it interacts quite well with the street. Overall much nicer than most contemporary design, IMO. I wonder why they half-assed the cornice in the 21c rendering OC posted.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Maybe the $4.4m for the city hall renovation could go to the streetcar. Hmm... Anyone else notice we're on page 513?

Cincinnati: Clifton: Development and News
Anyone know when the grocery store in the old Kellers space is opening? That's been closed almost a year now!

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Washington Park
Those pictures really highlight how ridiculous it is the way the SCPA interacts (or doesn't interact) with the park. On all other sides of the park, the orientation of the buildings make it feel like a grand space. Then there's the southern end.

On the bright side, Columbus is probably best-positioned to handle the likely bust of the company.

ODOT Policy Discussion
The real issue is not cost overruns but lack of consideration for the bigger picture. The brunt of the economic damage caused by these projects is typically not in cost overruns but in induced travel and reduction in the ratio of infrastructure per capita (i.e. sprawl). The cost overruns are one-time affairs; the physical damage is systemic. While cost overruns are a legitimate issue, focusing on them to the exclusion of the more fundamental question of why we are overbuilding our highway network in the first place, is a symptom of the myopic America which gave birth to the Tea Party. Penny-wise, dollar-foolish, yada yada. Not that the TP would be in love with the intensified federal oversight implicitly advocated for in the article. That part seems reasonable.

New Jersey: Explained
You poor thing. The beaches are nice MTS!! Although they are so burdened with some pretty draconian state and local rules. Yep, in NJ they've managed to make the beach an awful pain for most people. Umm...Sandy Hook...Nude beach...Draconian rules?

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
I'm not following why anyone would think pipes need to be moved under the airport, which is in Blue Ash, if a streetcar is built downtown. Is van der Haar the one who owns the Glencoe site and is in cahoots with Smitherman?

Airline Industry News and Discussion
Off topic but Oriental is a type of furniture. And calling someone of Asian heritage "oriental" can be seen as offensive. Yes, I knew that about people, but not places. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orient http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orient#American_English Okay, so Airline Industry Woes...

Metro Cincinnati: Road & Highway News
Please don't widen the median. The space would be much better for transit, bike, and/or extra sidewalk space. More median would serve little purpose.

Cincinnati City Council
Here is new City Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld’s reaction to the budget proposal, specifically the $4 million plan to turn City Hall’s courtyard into an events atrium. http://cincinnati.com/blogs/politics/2011/12/09/read-p-g-sittenfelds-budget-comments/ I agree that the event space, while not the worst idea, probably doesn't have much potential for gaining revenue. Surely, there are other things which would be a better allocation of $4.4m. But two of the four alternatives proposed by Sittenfeld are demolitions and a highway project. Talk about poor ROI. I knew I didn't like the guy before the election, but now he is starting to look like a real thorn on council. Bleh.

There should be a black alternative: SupaCuts. Maybe some Gateway Q entrepreneur who reads this board could make that happen. Free business advice at UO! Might make a good sequel to the Barbershop movie -- the chain SupaCuts is coming into the neighborhood and pushing out the mom & pop shop.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
Good one. IMO, Emancipation would have to go with Avenue or Parkway. I guess it could be Boulevard.

You mean will have to pay $75 if they want a space, or will have to pay for a space if they want an apartment?
