Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Everyone puts relative weight on different issues. For some people, at some times, one issue trumps all. Saying that is illegitimate is silly.

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Mercer Commons
1) That's a "chicken-or-the-egg" issue. 2) Not everywhere in Europe is accessible by transit. Just most places people want to go on a daily basis.

Also possibly Kenyon-Barr.

ROFLMAO! Thing 1 or 2 don't grocery shop for me. That my nephews responsibility! Seriously, I grocery shop, I'm just not good at it. Grocery shop???? Why?? That's why god created restaurants I think you're the only person on this board who can out-snob MTS. You two should hook up. I think it's a generational thing. People my age (~30) and younger are accustomed to caller ID to the extent that voice messages are not relevant. And if you can get what you want across in a voice message, you might as well text anyway. Also, you have to waste precious minutes on your phone plan to listen to voicemail. If you're going to call the person back anyway, you might as well save a minute or two and jump straight to the call.

Ohio's 30th Senatorial District
So the Dispatch doesn't shy away from mentioning Viagra. It was interesting that the Enquirer was willing to whitewash their sensationalism for that aspect of the story. Even their article on his resignation makes no mention of Sildenafil on the toxicology report. Are they covering for him, or do they think it's beneath them? They have no problem with mentioning the young woman, nor his refusal to identify her or explain her presence. Though they do not identify her as a stripper, as the Dispatch does! Would a Democrat in hot water receive the same treatment from the Enquirer? This story reminds me of the new Stephen Malkmus song: http://whatdoesthesenatorwant.com/

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
^^ One of the opponents' primary stated beefs with the project is that it is a waste of money because it "doesn't go anywhere". Spending even a fraction of that on a project which does not provide "any kind of viable transportation" (i.e. one which actually doesn't go anywhere), would be taken as an instance that proves the rule that advocates are all about wasting money and don't care that the streetcar would "go nowhere" or not provide viable transportation. Why would we want to feed into their nonsense?

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
I meant for the future of the streetcar. A few blocks of tracks in the ground would be nice, but that seems almost impossible at this point. The next best thing is signed contracts which essentially make it illegal not to build the streetcar.

Amtrak & Federal: Passenger Rail News
That sounds like it could be much more than a month (building a whole bridge??). That really sucks for anyone planning to ride to Cincy from Indy/Chicago (or vice versa).

Signed contracts are more important than groundbreaking.

Local Communities Fighting Public Housing
It's way more complicated than that. What is the scope of "place", for one? If you think regionally, putting X units of public housing in one area vs. another is zero-sum. Scattering them, however, is better for the regional community as a whole (e.g. so there are no pockets in a region where crime can fester without witnesses willing to come forward). On a federal level, spreading public housing as thinly as possible is best for a place: the country. IMO, if in any given place there are enough eyes on the streets to keep crime risky and therefore limited, that is the ideal situation. If we allow pockets of lawlessness, a criminal population sprouts up and has an impact far beyond the concentrated area of those afraid to "snitch" on those within their midst. As an added bonus, there is an argument to be made that this policy which is best for the greater good (the most safety for the most people) is also the most humane treatment of individuals who are the neediest among us -- i.e. they get safety and exposure to a culture in which they are more likely to be upwardly mobile. Furthermore, you provide a helping hand for the poor while reducing the need for police. Public safety, as we all know, is the largest expenditure for local governments. Why be reactionary when you can nip the problem in the bud?

No one can expect to post anything in this thread without MTS finding something to nitpick. When are you going on your next UO sabbatical?

Zines! Need advice on an urbanist zine (how to do distro)
I would expect to take a loss on the project, but I like the idea. There used to be several DIY record stores in Cincy in the '90s that stocked lots of zines (in the Corryville area especially), but they and the zines are long gone. I don't think the owners were very cunning business people, LOL. You might try Everybody's Records in Pleasant Ridge (Cincy). There is also this weird record store in OTR. I've never actually been there; it's kind of mythical to me. Its name doesn't help: Another Part of the Forest. I assume they're still open(?). Off topic: Does anyone remember The Void punk club/record store in Cincinnati in the mid/late '90s? I think it was in a building on Short Vine, but you entered from Glendora. They weren't open long, due to code violations. Good times!

Philadelphia's Center City District as model for Cleveland
So the biggest real estate owner in Center City spearheaded this revival. Is there anyone in Cleveland to fit that bill? The ambassador thing seems largely geared to tourists, which as far as I know tourism is not big enough in Cleveland to have a similar program. The downtown shopping night, where all stores pledge to stay open until at least 8 is perhaps doable. What steps might get this done? Improved lighting can be pushed for with a grass roots campaign. Discuss!
