It's April. We need a groundbreaking!

Actual cost of driving
^ Companies buying/shipping the goods might choose an alternate mode if the cost of shipping by truck were explicitly higher.

Higher Education
No matter how true or not true that might be, the rich kids without initiative and desire still get the benefits. There needs to be a real crackdown on unpaid internships. Most are illegal, but there doesn't seem to be much done about it. via http://www.californiaemploymentlawyersblog.com/2010/04/federal-criteria-defining-legality-of-unpaid-internships.html The NYT had an article about the phenomenon a year ago: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/03/business/03intern.html

Many are too busy working low-wage jobs to do extra curriculars or internships (which usually aren't paid, these days). The unpaid internship has become a great enforcer for the aristocracy.

I would guess you start with the premise that the funding is there, or will be there. It was essentially promised, after all.

I don't mean to trash your article, it's just that if I felt it were more persuasive, I would pass it on to people who are on the fence on the issue. The way it is, if I were to pass it on, it would only go to those who already agree with us.

I agree the business leader poll was flawed and statistically meaningless. But so is a poll in which anyone can vote. It's not scientific. Why even mention it? It does nothing to support your argument, and distracts from true money quotes like:

Considering this could be a matter of life or death for some of their constituents, they probably don't. Thanks for being inconsiderate. Hater.

No thanks for that image.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
It's frustrating to me that all the pro-streetcar articles seem to have fluff that is either transparently sensationalist or easily shot down, distracting from the solid arguments presented. For example: It's my understanding this was a poll of Courier subscribers. Not to mention there was a less favorable component to that poll (selective facts, anyone?). This carries about as much weight as an Enquirer poll, for which we would all justifiably shake our heads at and wring our hands over the questionable validity. I know the opposition does this, and worse, but considering there are plenty of valid and sensible arguments we can use, why stoop to this? To the sensible observer, it creates the appearance of weakness in the proponents' case. I know some people who feel iffy about the streetcar, and I feel like I can't pass on these articles because, while they contain good arguments, they also contain bad arguments. Also, the sensationalism/partisanship can be a turnoff for those who aren't members of the choir. I guess this works, though, for rallying the base.

Someone needs to hold a press conference condemning the reapportionment of funds away from the Cincinnati area, with emphasis on the complete lack of impact on the state budget. It's the only way the media will report these facts. If Kasich can get his "new sheriff in town" crap in print, his buffoonery can be counterweighted. Otherwise, he just gets to lie, lie, lie, and Cincinnatians will be duped into thinking they're making a sacrifice for some greater good, instead of for Kasich's near-and-dear in Pickaway County.
-
Governor John Kasich
We could "pull a Kasich" and have a referendum on a constitutional amendment which explicitly bans Kasich from holding office.

These are recommendations by ODOT staff, right? Are the recommendations binding on TRAC? This is insanity. If the Enquirer had an ounce of objectivity, this would infuriate Cincinnatians -- even ones who are somewhat unsupportive of the streetcar.

Governor John Kasich
He's like Charlie Sheen without the drugs. (Drugs being about the only thing I'm able to give him the benefit of the doubt on, at this point. Though it might explain a few things.)

Be careful what you wish for--if Bortz goes and is replaced by someone who is anti-Streetcar, it's far worse. I would assume it would be arranged that his replacement would have similar views to Bortz on the important issues -- that's usually the way it works.

Bortz now needs to go. Before, it didn't really matter that he couldn't vote on one of the most important, and recurring (in terms of votes), issues in the city. Now it does.
