Governor John Kasich
That's a shame. As libertarian as I consider myself to be, I like the concept of estate tax. Any time a huge chunk of money changes hands, it should be taxed quite a bit. I think my opinion has something to do with individual responsibility... I think income tax should be a lot, lot lower, and things like estate tax and sales tax should be what they are, if not a bit higher to compensate. Why should I pay taxes on something that's going to be passed on to me? Or why should my heirs pay taxes on things I bequeath to them? Why shouldn't you? My question is why should I pay income tax, on money that I've worked very hard to earn? If you receive a huge gift, under any circumstances (even a death), it should be taxed. Passing money down and keeping it in the family does nothing for the economy, whereas my disposable income will be put back into the economy directly. Taking tax dollars from income and not gifts is taking out of the wrong pot. I am not against income tax like you are, but I agree with your reasoning in that estate tax makes way more sense. Getting money you didn't work for should definitely be taxed!!! Very highly, IMO!

I think Tom Luken lives in the city.

The Dating Thread
The way to sell it is "I look young for my age...", you gotta emphasize "looking younger" rather than "being older"! You might also include the city you live in. (My guess is Cleveland, since it seems to be Clevelanders who have trouble remembering this isn't a Cleveland forum! :P ) Good luck with the ladies. ;) A number of NE Ohioians look younger than there actual age. I guess you folks down south lead hard lives. I prefer my daddies to look mature.

Pit Bulls are only vicious when trained to be. What's crazy is the inheritance tax thing.

Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ the Loop
"U Square" is the quadrilateral plot they are developing, at (@) which they expect U will live, work, eat, and/or shop. Someone should revive Vertigo, and put it on US@TL.

What are you eating?
Yeah, 3-Way! Suck it, rest-of-Ohio! :P

Anyone know why they are inactive? Too busy? Bored with the place? Political ambitions better served by a lower online profile?

Whaaaat. This is weird. I don't even know what Fringe is. Maybe I should just stay far away from here.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
No streetcar system yet (late 2013ish?). Bus service is good from downtown to the hospitals. Of course, that can be affected by snow and ice.

Admit Your Cultural Blasphemy!
evd: While some may be pale imitation, some would aptly be called refinement. In that sense, "derivative" doesn't mean bad. To claim there has been no shift in modern music as big as there was in the 60's may be defensible, but to say there hasn't been anything but slow evolution on the 60's model is a stronger claim, and I would argue ridiculous. Development of hip-hop and hip-hop-influenced music was a pretty radical, post-60's shift. Electronic music may have roots in the 60's, but it's hardly "derivative" in a significantly weaker sense than 60's music was derivative from that which came before. Your ears were tuned in the 60's, so music that came later which you can appreciate is that which is more highly influenced from that era. You need to get beyond that bias. The uniqueness of the Beatles is their ability to tie mainstream popularity with avant garde experimentalism. Basically, they were on top of both of those (typically competing) games. No one else has achieved that before or since. It was a fluke of the culture at the time that such an environment was produced where that was possible. Once radical experimentalism became cool, it's easy to cop-out and say that everything made since is derivative of the 60's. It's a new sound, so it's experimental, so it's 60's-influenced. (If it's not new, then of course it's derivative by definition.)

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
I understand that, but we're talking about Cincinnati council and mayor candidates. I don't know one Cincinnati Republican politician who supports, say, the streetcar.

Wenstrup doesn't. Winburn doesn't. Ghiz doesn't. Monzel doesn't. Okay, so the bike plan was voted on unanimously. I'll retract that statement, though I have a feeling if motorists start challenging the bike plan, the R's will bail...but that's admittedly just my feeling.

Neither group is what they claim to be. "Streetcar = boondoggle", "Medicare > Government healthcare", etc.

Great point. If he wins, he might be there for a long time (is council term-limited?) Cincinnatians for Progress has its work cut out for it. Council is term-limited. (So is the mayor.) I think it's more a problem if he runs for mayor. If he can command much of the black vote, he may hand the mayorship to a Republican. I know you like Republicans, but they don't like transit, cycling, complete streets, etc.

In your world Tea Party = COAST? I don't agree with your calculus. "Citizens Opposed to Additional Spending and Taxes" = "Taxed Enough Already" The local TP people and COAST get along nicely.

Only in Cincinnati do the Tea Party and NAACP unite more often than not.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Mabley Place (formerly Tower Place Mall)
I'm starting to really like the idea of making Tower Place a cinema. Hopefully, then, the retail stores could find a street downtown to make a shopping district. It would be nice if Dohoney or someone would try to facilitate this.

John Boehner
Who cares? Let the man cry. At least no one can say he is an emotionless robot politician. Even if he's wrong most of the time.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
Welcome, laurasrn! What brings you to Cincinnati? jjak, Phatty, atlas: all good points. I think they could have done a lot to make it better. One way would be to make the differences up top show all the way to street level. Another way would be to embrace the large building, and use less farcical techniques to emphasize the vertical (could even be dmerkow's suggestion of a second empire look). Another possibility would be to actually make smaller buildings (they could be connected in places for convenience). Mixing up the architects could have helped.
