There are lots of skeevy-looking gays. Trust.
  2. The Browns' history exists only in Baltimore. Really? Just trying to provoke! Agreed.

  4. LOL.
  5. Because apparently gingko is an accepted variation in the spelling, much like buses and busses. Okay, my bad...I can't help but think it's become an acceptable variation due to people's inability to spell the original, though! :)
  6. Why does everyone have so much trouble spelling the word 'ginkgo'?
  7. ^ It could be an opportunity put to use a bunch of traffic calming tactics to make it not feel like a barrier for pedestrians. Maybe I'm just being over-optimistic, but these casino people keep coming out with good ideas. It could be a good future streetcar stop, closed or not. CUT-Casino, maybe then extended up Gilbert. They did talk about potentially contributing streetcar money, after all.
  8. I'm just saying this on a hunch (with some knowledge of the history of the location), but my bet is near 100%.
  9. COAST commented on the letter, supporting spending on the park.

European cultural blasphemy: Americans in white tennies! Also...eating at McDonald's when on a short trip to another country! Maybe you could offer some confessions to the cultural blasphemy thread, KJP. ;-) Good luck with the women, and thanks for the photo tour!
  11. Where'd you find that photo? I'm pretty sure he took it. I first saw it on his blog.

This video is overwhelming in so many ways, but I think sheer hilarity wins out. So I am compelled to share it!
  13. I think a lot of what people interpret as "southern" in Cincinnati is actually German. The west side perhaps epitomizes the insularity and conservatism which people tag the city with, but the west side's culture is primarily rooted in German Catholic immigration from the 1800s. Some of them crossed the second Rhine (the Mill Creek) and stewed there for a few generations, rarely emerging from their little corner, and voila. You get your typical Cincinnati conservative, without any of the historical baggage that comes along with your typical southern conservative. Then, of course, the wave of Appalachians was sparked by the depression, and people start to paint the rigid Germans as descendants of Robert E. Lee. To my mind, these Germans have more in common with the fascista-Italian types you find on the East Coast or in Cleveland (who are generally Democrats, but certainly not liberal) than they have in common with American southerners.
  14. If we want to do it on the cheap we really should just take the $400m the feds offered.

Hipsters love to follow pop culture. they just do it "ironically". In fact, all the biggest pop culture whores I know are hipsters. The whole hipster mode of being seems to be emulating something you profess to dislike so fully that you come out on the opposite end. To be so fake -- excuse me, "ironic" -- you come out authentic. Hence, for instance, the uber-consumeristic worship of Apple. IMO, things just don't work that way, no matter how much you wish to live in a postmodern fantasyland. Is this juxtaposition meant to be ironic?
  16. He lied about the speed of 3C. He lied about Ohio being a donor state (it used to be, but not for several years). And he lied by implying spending 3C money on other Ohio projects wouldn't add to the federal deficit, while spending it as intended would. (Not to mention just talking about reappropriating the funds is talking point BS.) Atherton should have called him out. It's not the media's job to play lapdog to elected officials. Grow a spine!
  17. Columbus to Cincinnati, via Dayton, would also cover Dayton and provide Chicago/East Coast connections. Those connections are slower, however (maybe not to Chicago, I'm not sure), and so is estimated travel time on the 3C portion. You do pick up Dayton, however, and connecting Dayton and Cincinnati is certainly not bad, considering the economic connections. In fact, this could be done in phases with phase 1 being Dayton > Cincy, phase 2 Cbus > Dayton. That might make it more politically palatable.
  18. I think the west side would stand a good chance to get an early streetcar extension, if they'd convert their anti-streetcar energy into pro-westside-streetcar energy. This would be especially true if 3C had a stop on the bank of the Mill Creek opposite CUT. That's another thing west siders could advocate for! (I borrowed that idea from none other than Eighth and State.) To a large extent, I think the west side needs to learn to help itself before it can expect others to help it. Justifiably or not, they've earned the reputation of the crazy kid playing over in the corner by himself, who everyone else just leaves alone because he is crazy. Just opposing things like 3C for selfish reasons is not productive for anyone.

^^ It was a reference to the (widespread?) rumor that his HIV disappeared. So, yes, it was sarcasm. Edit: So you don't think I made this up, here's some evidence.

I used to have a sink in my bedroom. Yeah, not going to walk any further than necessary in the middle of the night. I'm sure all the women here are thoroughly disgusted. The guys are like, well, okay. (MTS, of course, counts as a woman in this case.)
  21. I'm not sure who I know that may have voted for Kasich, but I know several Strickland voters who are against the streetcar and 3C. I know some who are anti-streetcar, but pro-3C. I don't think I know any anti-3C but pro-streetcar. I know Republicans who voted for Strickland in part because of Kasich's 3C stance. Your west-sider roots might influence the people you know, and therefore the opinions you're exposed to.
  22. I think the casino issue passed in large part because of the economic crisis. It might take another crisis (gasoline prices!) to get a train. I don't think it's a bad idea to go for something smaller if 3C fails (it seems to be working re: MetroMoves vs. streetcar), but it hasn't failed yet. You say "try something different", yet that's exactly what the JPA solution is -- something different! You might think you're the only realistic one on here, but I guarantee not a one of us thinks of him or herself as unrealistic. So perhaps you yourself could use a dose of realism.

That's not news. Happened to Magic Johnson years ago!
  24. I just really can't agree with that at all. Being northern is absolutely part of Cincinnati's identity. It has southern flavor (most of which is a 20th century, post-depression addition), but it's definitely not "more southern". The mix of north, south, east coast, and midwest gives Cincinnati a cultural diversity it lacks in ethnic diversity.
