Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
I'm sure this has been answered in this thread, but what percentage of ODOT's highway funds come from the gas tax and registration fees? If you only include that, though, you're counting out the expense people do spend on their cars. But at the same time, a dollar spent on your own car is not the same as a dollar spent on a railroad's rolling stock. The comparison is subjective, but real nonetheless.

So there will be windows, at least on the ground floor. I wonder if they will lease the space, or just open restaurants and shops themselves.

Cincinnati: OTR Brewery District
Moerlein brings beer back to Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine brewery district Christian Moerlein Brewing Co. will start making beer by early next year in the former Husman potato chip plant in Over-the-Rhine. Greg Hardman, Moerlein’s owner and CEO, said he intends to initially shift production of some specialty beers from out-of-state breweries where he’s been making his beer under contract. He also has got some new labels in the pipeline in addition to Northern Liberties India Pale Ale, the latest of his Moerlein lagers and ales set for release next month. Read more

What I thought he said was that his choice worked better for him than the alternative did for his coworkers. Not that his choice was inherently better, just that it worked better for him in this circumstance. Oh, and I thought it was cute too, LOL.

What do your preferences have to do with the topic at hand, unless you are trying to say your preference somehow discredits seanmcl's?

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
So you call that fact to the fore, and invite people without a strong bias to make their own decision as to whether or not they buy it. Anyone with a bias against rail is going to always have some argument, however petty, to justify their position. Those aren't the people proponents should be focusing on persuading, though.

That, in fact, appears to be the underlying assumption of many of the criticisms of 3C, namely, that the experience of other states is irrelevant to Ohio. This may, in fact, be true, but we'll never know until we try. It may be helpful for rail supporters to identify successful lines in other states which they believe to be sufficiently analogous to 3C. Key factors would include cost, speed, distance, and ease of getting to and from the train station from primary points of arrival and departure. Explain why they are analogous and explicitly challenge opponents to explain why they are not.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Yeah, that's what I was trying to get at. It also highlights an important point: in order to "prove" the train is worthwhile, it may be necessary to convince doubters that a critical mass of trips would need to be preferred by travelers as train trips. If someone is convinced that Ohio is special, and other states' experiences are not useful as predictors for Ohio, this task is essentially impossible.

Hopefully the $25m will answer all his questions. Hopefully, then, he won't be bitter that it took $25m to answer them. I don't know where he expects the answers to come from, otherwise, if he doesn't already have them.

Again, that goes back to personal preference, which doesn't lend itself naturally to reason. It's primarily emotional.

I think we are supposed to hear something in the summer...no particular date. I assume you know about the $15m from the state that was granted.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Queen City Square
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe outside the ground level there is going to be a bit of open space (a square), hence "Queen City Square", then the tower and its companion building will have stores and lobbies off the square. I don't think the square is meant to be very large, but maybe there will be a few planters or eventually an art piece or something. I might be a little off but I think there is in fact a square of some kind. :-)

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
It's really about an individual and their preferences, or what works for them. Obviously, the train worked best for seanmcl. Given his conversations with his colleagues, we can draw the conclusion that they would likely also have benefited from using the train. Although they decided not to, so we don't know for sure. That can lead us to reasonable speculation that some people may have unfounded biases against the train (although, again, we don't know that they would have liked/benefited from it). DanB's point basically amounts to: there are some people who the plane might work better for. Actually, his argument is a bit more complicated. It seems to go: for someone who acts with optimum rationality (scheduling their day(s) appropriately), the plane should work better. Even if we assume that to be true (there are some complications to consider, like seanmcl pointed out, but it still might be true), the bottom line is that, no matter what the optimal behavior is, only some people are so disciplined as to act that way whenever they want. And even among those people, it may be more comfortable for them to act in a suboptimal way. Comfort is a variable which DanB's assessment doesn't account for, but influences decision making. My assessment: DanB makes reasonable points when looking at the situation abstractly. However, he fails to account for nuances which go into actual decision-making and preference-forming, which are illustrated by seanmcl's concrete experience. amidoinitrite?

Great American Tower at Queen City Square Confusing? Yeah, a little. I think it will only be confusing for tourists, once everything is set up.

Moving Back to the 'Nati
Nearly everyone I know calls it Cincy, the Nati, or the Nasty. In written and verbal conversation. I have never heard the phrase "the Nasty" spoken aloud in Cincinnati I definitely have, many times. I've also said it myself, LOL.

Non-Ohio: Bicycling Developments and News
I'd love to see Cincinnati do this. It would be great to put stations at big parking garages. I know UC is planning to do some sort of bike lending thing. That's nice, but a bit limited in use. Especially since the area around campus is intimidatingly hilly, especially for those who aren't used to cycling. Also, I assume, it's just for students. If it were done downtown, I could imagine a family of four parking and renting bikes to get around on a nice spring/summer day, on game day, or whenever.

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
1. Have you ever watched a baseball game? There is a lot of downtime, during which you could absorb the views. 2. A nice view has a subconscious effect of making you enjoy your experience more, and be more likely to want to come back or report a positive experience to others. 3. (Related to 1 and 2) It would draw good word-of-mouth support. A knock-out view would be talked about nationally... "You've gotta go to a game in Cincinnati! The view outside the park is as good as the game!" (Maybe not exactly like that, but you get the point.) I agree it's not the most important thing, but it's not irrelevant.
