  1. I'd like to see the site go HTTPS.
  2. The fact is young people are the most mobile. Targeting any other demographic, you just aren't casting as wide a net. I still think the author has some good points that not every city can follow a paint-by-numbers pattern to success. There have to be things unique about a place that can be cultivated, highlighted, and enhanced, or you've just got another "me too" location. The same would be true if the focus is people who want to buy old houses -- there have to be attractive things beyond old houses to convince them to pick one area over another.
  3. Anyone know what's up with the overlapping neighborhood boundaries? Are the boundaries disputed? Are there no official boundaries? If not, I wish city council would take up the issue and get the neighborhoods decided once and for all.
  4. I apologize for trolling you guys. I'm disappointed with the way things turned out for you this season, and I would put the Browns in the Steelers' position in a heartbeat. Hope your QB situation pans out before next year. Who knows, Thigpen might turn out to be the answer. Now how about you kick the crap out of Baltimore? That would be fantastic.
  5. Thanks, that's great info. If it's not too much trouble to add citations, I would email it to some friends and family members. (And I encourage others on UO to consider doing the same.) If people are informed about how these things go, they will not be so susceptible to sensationalism regarding the streetcar, rail transit in general, or even bike lanes.
  6. Why do you feel the need to troll the Browns so hard both in this thread and in theirs? I get it during the week we play, but outside of that it just seems unnecessary. Trying to stir that UO pot I guess... 1) That game is still a recent memory, and had a big impact on both teams. 2) Their quarterback drama is ongoing and compelling. It's been of interest nationally. 3) Since the game, I am talking less smack and more like I would about the Bengals if they had gotten blown out and Dalton went all Bad-Andy. Manziel doesn't deserve respect from anyone right now, least of all Browns fans. I sympathize with them having to see their playoff hopes dashed in the last couple weeks. It could have happened to us. I really wish all the AFC North teams could still have a winning record, and I certainly would prefer to have them in the position of Pittsburgh or Baltimore right now.
  7. Two injured quarterbacks? Are the Browns the Bizarro Buckeyes?
  8. If West Virginia wants a daily Cardinal, it will probably happen. As anyone who's been paying attention knows, WV's wishes matter a lot more than OH's. That fact is plain enough just from the schedule.
  9. WTF? When Hoyer brought the Browns to the brink of a playoff berth, why would Shaw come in (let alone Johnny "Foot-tall" Manzielf)?!
  10. Last two weeks in review: The Browns are who we thought they were. The Bengals might be who we hope they are.
  11. I thought they were going to make the street level with the sidewalk? Did that plan get scrapped?
  12. I believe IPAs were developed for ocean trips (between India and Britain) because the hops help to preserve beer. I don't know why that is, and it's especially interesting since hops flavor is the first thing to noticeably change (it gets weaker rapidly) as beer ages. I don't know why they would be "supposed to be summertime beers" unless that's the only time ocean trips were made between India and Britain...which I highly doubt. In a world full of amazing IPAs, Commodore Perry doesn't stand out at all. Not that it's bad. Chillwave and Rhinegeist's Truth do stand out.
  13. Excuse me, Napoleon!
  14. So much for having all winning records in the division. :(
  15. Columbus would be a better rival, I could hate them more. Maybe the Browns should move there.
  16. Those new multi-space parking meters would save money, so maybe some of the savings could go toward more bike parking. I'd rather see bike advocates push for that instead of holding onto an outdated parking system.

Don't hipsters dig lo-fi? The original hipsters certainly did. It's a whole (loosely defined) genre embracing the attitude toward order/disorder behind jmeck's quote. Here's some Ohio lo-fi: Cloud Nothings: (No idea if that's an official video.) Times New Viking: Some psych lo-fi I dig from Athens, GA. Probably falls into the "term paper" camp since it's more headphone music than something to see live. Whatever.

So do hipsters stereotypically drink sh!tty PBR-type beer or nuts, fruits, and berries craft beer? I'm confused.
  19. Now the Taft Ale House people just need to figure out something to do with the steeple to get rid of the feeling that something is missing. How about a big statue of Taft raising a mug/stein to the Queen of the West? Maybe he could be riding a flying pig.
  20. I said a few times on here that I hoped the tax would fail so private money would come forward. The buildings were not in imminent doom of collapse, so it would be inevitable that the issue would be revisited if this didn't happen. But removing the incentive entirely via a tax would ensure tax payers would be milked for the entirety. Still, I think it was BS for the commissioners to throw out the plan produced by the people who studied the heck out of what would work and not allow residents to vote on saving both buildings. This $25m doesn't replace the need for another stream of funding (be it private donations, taxes, or whatever).
  21. http://queencitydrinks.com/beer/3-tier-system-breweries/ I believe all the Rhinegeist cans you see in stores are self-distributed.
  22. I'm surprised Riverghost (the distributor owned by the Rhinegeist guys) hasn't made a move into northern Ohio yet. Aside from Chillwave, Rhinegeist's pale ales and IPAs beat the pants off anything (of those styles) from Great Lakes. The only way I could see someone disagreeing is if they are really into the Dogfish Head type of English-influenced east coast IPA, which Lake Erie Monster is a pretty good example (second only to Dogfish Head 90 Minute). Rhinegeist holds its own against San Diego darlings Stone and Ballast Point. I'd put Truth between Stone IPA (not as good as Truth) and BP's Sculpin (better, but also way overpriced).
  23. ^ Guess I didn't have all the facts straight. I was just looking at 8 stories of residential versus 22 and the other details I skimmed or somehow didn't register. Thanks.
  24. Thanks RnR. Sorry that happened to your friend.
  25. In the early streetcar years Kevin Flynn was a known streetcar supporter who showed up to a variety of pro-streetcar events. Why someone who is confined to a wheelchair as a result of a high speed car accident (link: http://enquirer.com/editions/2002/02/23/loc_crash_leaves_one.html) would oppose a transportation mode with the best ADA characteristics is baffling. It is mind-boggling. I had no idea that's how he ended up in the wheelchair. He "lost control" on 74, crossed the median, and hit another car head-on. Wow. A miracle no one died.
