Cincinnati: Brent Spence Bridge
Maybe if I knew of a precedent for that, I would be less skeptical. I know all about EZ-Pass, but not this camera stuff, which I raised the possibility that it could be difficult with out-of-state plates. The Enquirer said something to back this suspicion up: I know enough about toll tech to know that the middle paragraph there is rather silly, especially regarding the lift gates which hardly exist at all anymore. But I don't know of any proof of concept for quick and easy charging based on license plates. "Tracking down violators and mailing multiple invoices ultimately could cost the states and tolling authorities more than the original toll" -- this seems likely to be a problem with the camera charging.

US Economy: News & Discussion
Depends what you want from the economy. Do you want prosperity for all Americans or just American economic power on the global stage?

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
I sort of like the look of the big box entry thing...Hope they don't clad it in brick. As it is (at least at the resolution of the picture), it seems like it fits with the textures/materials used in the park and on the Freedom Center.

Ohio Turnpike
Surely someone else could explain what's going on more accurately than I can, but basically there are 3 major road projects totaling something like $4bil proposed for "improvements" on interstate 75. The biggest one is the Brent Spence Bridge "replacement" (which isn't a replacement but a redundancy). That is to be paid for by tolls on the bridge, and is largely a Kentucky thing (though not entirely). Along with that is a set of "improvements" between the Western Hills Viaduct and the Norwood Lateral, and another set between the Norwood Lateral and either the Cross-County Highway or 275. Part of the plan is to widen the highway from 3 to 4 lanes (it is currently 4 lanes up to I think Hopple Street, but they want to expand that much further north), and redoing a bunch of interchanges (including the elimination of left exit ramps). Some of this might be warranted, but the majority of it is not! And it is definitely not something you guys should be footing the bill for! Kasich touts Turnpike money plan The massive rebuilding of Interstate 75 from the Western Hills Viaduct to the Ronald Reagan/Cross County Highway is exactly the kind of project that could benefit from a new plan to unlock up to $3 billion in Ohio Turnpike revenue, Gov. John Kasich said Friday. Details are yet to be worked out, and projects have been promised nothing. But the governor said his plan for using toll revenue could provide significant economic development benefits in southwest Ohio. “It’s almost breath-taking when you think about this,” Kasich told business and political leaders at Cincinnati State, part of a two-day tour of Ohio to promote his plan and create 65,000 jobs across the state. Read more Here is some info about alternatives kinda/sorta: http://www.i75millcreekexpressway.com/alternatives.htm I believe the city has pushed to have some right-of-way reserved for light rail. I'm not sure the extent to which the city has been successful in getting pro-urban plans into the official plans. I think this is the only transit component that has been discussed. Making room for light rail to exit the subway tunnel and cross 75 (and the Mill Creek) to the Northside neighborhood would be a nice feature. Adding the actual light rail system to the plans and scrapping the more anti-urban "improvements" would be ideal.

Ohio Turnpike
Kasich was in Cincinnati yesterday extolling the brilliance of his plan to take money from Northern Ohio and use it to expand the damage I-75 does to urban neighborhoods in Cincinnati (bringing it from 3 lanes to 4). Please fight this, my Northern brethren.

R.I.P.: Robert Pence
I always found his stories about gay life and coming out in a much less tolerant era very inspiring, as someone who has had the fortune of growing up in a time easier to be open and honest about my sexuality. He was one of the pioneers to pave the way for people like me. All the while, he never fled to NYC or SF, and stayed active in the farming community in Indiana until his death. A real man's man, marching to the beat of his own drum. RIP

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
It's telling that only 49% of people who aren't afraid to go to OTR feel OTR is safe in the late night hours. It shouldn't have to be pointed out, but OTR is not Cincinnati. And improvement in the perception of safety is not the same as scoring well in perception of safety. I've lived in safe cities. I've lived in unsafe cities. I'm not afraid of Cincinnati, but it is middling at best in the safety category. We should all be honest about that. Celebrate improvements, but don't pretend the work is anywhere near being finished. We should also be honest that moving the problem around is not the same as solving it. Edit: Hey, that's pretty awesome Cincy avoided being in the FBI's top 25 most dangerous cities this year. Cleveland got out of the top 10, which is also nice to see.

Sounds like a nice place for a new airport (to replace CVG and DAY). That's the only development I could imagine getting excited about there. What a shame.

Cincinnati: Brent Spence Bridge
First I have heard any of the "double tax" anti-toll crowd actually question the dogmatic urgent need for the bridge. I hope they successfully slow the B$B down as much as they have the streetcar. Anyone else wondering why COAST is mum on this issue?

University of Cincinnati Bearcats Football Discussion
It's disrespectful and a sign of him having a temper which he can't necessarily control 100%. I agree he seems like a snake, but from my perspective it is just a business deal. If he bails for the SEC, that probably means he has done a good job at UC, which is all I want him to do. After the past three coaches, it's obvious there is no sense in getting emotionally invested in them. As long as he advances the program in the time he is here, it's all gravy.
