  1. +1 Except I'm not sure I have seen anything stranger:
  2. Albany!!! = <3 <3 <3 Top 5 US city. You are so right about Empire State Plaza. It has grown on me, though. It is like a Martian skyline! :) I've gotta get to Buffalo. Always looks neat. I imagine it to be a bit like Cleveland. Have only seen it briefly on the way to Niagara Falls and Toronto.
  3. If the idea of the House of Representatives is to be the majority-rules balance to the Senate's minority-protecting chamber, getting rid of districts really might not be a bad idea at all. I don't know what the best alternative would be, but some system for proportional representation would seem to capture that character more than the current system. For example, a parliament-style system where one votes for a party rather than individuals. Then the party gets a number of seats proportional to the vote received. Having such a system might also be a good way to get some viable third parties in the door of mainstream American politics, without overhauling the entire political system.

Wash them, but don't rinse the soap off. Just put them straight in the dish drainer. That is the Euro way as I learned it. I'm sure the continent is not monolithic in its (in)sanitary practices, however.
  5. I think Hamilton County is permanently blue now. Just as the city of Cincinnati has developed a progressive voting bloc which has effectively flexed its muscles several elections in a row, HamCo has shown a slight but definitive liberal bent. This runs contrary to decades and decades of being a red stronghold. Republicans have fled to formerly greener pastures, in tax havens on subdivided farmland in Butler and Warren counties. Good riddance. It is no coincidence their diminishing numbers coincide with a city making strides towards greatness, like the streetcar, OTR redevelopment, and the county-owned Banks and riverfront park projects. Never been prouder to be a Hamilton County native. Keep up the good work.
  6. It would make more sense for Obama voters to want to move to Canada after a Romney victory here, considering the right wing in Canada is arguably more liberal than Obama. I got a chuckle out of one of my Republican FB friends having a conversation with her R friends about moving to Canada. I mean, all you have to do is think "single-payer healthcare" to see the obvious dissonance.
  7. I didn't think Issue 4 would pass. It sounds like the bizarre tie to the streetcar may have backfired. ^ I feel you, but I am developing confidence in the staying power of the city's progressive political coalition. The only sign against it is the fact that the streetcar's margin of victory narrowed between 2009 and 2011. Cincinnati seems to have reached a political turning point favoring progressive politics. Along those lines, HamCo seems to have adopted a blue hue (though doubtfully urbanist-progressive blue).
  8. The networks are starting to call the race for Sherrod. I'm so ready to see this thread buried in obscurity.

    Any chance that's posted online?
  10. For those who miss Horstman's hair: http://news.cincinnati.com/videonetwork/1934725288001/Provisional-Ballots-Require-Extra-Care
  11. It may also have to do with Brown polling well, making him an easy Democrat to pick without offending too many people. Of course, that is related to the lunacy of his opposition.
  12. I think they just make more or less random Democratic endorsements in and effort to appear bipartisan/nuanced/sophisticated. If they show too much partisanship, their opinions get written off by half of their potential audience in a region so politically divided.
  13. Enquirer endorses Romney and Brown. More surprised over Brown than Romney. But not really surprised, overall.

That is completely insane, if it is an accurate description of what they did. Harvesting brains as computers. WTF. Wow. Edit: Just noticed it's from 2004. What has been done with this technology since?
  15. That was fun while it lasted. I was pulling for you guys. MAC is a beast this year. Beating up hard on the Big East.
  16. I just thought of something which would be a big downside to 4 year terms, and that is appointments. I hate when someone gets appointed to council without a vote (which is sort of what created the anti-streetcar majority PAlex speaks of), and it would really irk me to see someone on there for upwards of 2 or 3 whole years who wasn't elected.

I think things work as they are. Even when I get the high server load message, the forum is never or very rarely overwhelmingly slow.

There's no comparison between the rental market in Cincinnati and that of NYC. In NYC, tenants compete for apartments. In Cincinnati, landlords compete for tenants. I made do without a dishwasher in NYC because my options were limited; I was happy just to have my own apartment without a roommate and be near a stop on the express train. In Cincinnati, I can afford to be much more selective. I agree. But still, I can't imagine finding an awesome apartment and turning it down because there's no dishwasher.

At which end? Is Milford going to sprout up a CBD that surpasses Downtown?

Doesn't the Oasis line go through Anderson? Doesn't one of the COASTers live in Anderson? This might get interesting.
  21. No, he meant Charlie. Watch/listen to the video.

^ Does that mean it would be impossible for a developer to negotiate a stop being added for new development between Downtown and Lunken? I would think there should be a stop by the Boathouse/Adam's Crossing. There are a few high-density apartment buildings there already, there is a walking path to Mount Adams, potential for more development, and park-and-ride potential on the periphery of Downtown. Edit: It's also right near the event space for Sawyer Point, and could boost the usefulness of this space for events.
  23. Minus the ninja kick! Pretty sure only surfohio and Chuck Norris could pull that off. This coming from a self-proclaimed (nati)ninja... I feel bad about enjoying the story so much, since it must have been so traumatic. Thanks for sharing, anyway.

I am left wondering how LiG lived in NYC for so long with his dishwasher demands. The only people I know in NYC with dishwashers are very wealthy. I never had one living in Europe. It was inconvenient, but only slightly (much more intolerable were the standards my European friends had for cleanliness when they hand-washed dishes). I can't imagine it ever being a dealbreaker on an awesome apartment.
