Favorite Music At The Moment?
jmeck frequently talks like he is the final arbiter of musical taste and sophistication. White Zombie is rather base and unsophisticated IMO. From what I've read, Meck DOES know music and base & unsophisticated is just part of the mix. Dunno if anybody is following the BS on the Twins of Evil Tour but Marilyn Manson & Rob Zombie are getting a little PO'd at each other with Mary threatening to kick Rob's ass & Rob cussing out Mary from the stage. Almost makes me want to go to a show..... Oh, I agree he knows music. It's the proclamations about other people's taste that is the part I was ridiculing. When you accept your love of simplistic, derivative music (which White Zombie most definitely is), then it's hypocritical to judge others for doing the same. WZ is just a logical combination of other sounds from the time, sounds innovated by other contemporary acts. The exact same can be said of Operation Ivy, a band jmeck was just dissing a couple weeks ago. Both bands have unique sounds, but I don't believe you can throw insults at one that can't be lobbed at the other.

Cincinnati: Eastern Corridor
Look at the route. It serves probably the lowest density area possible for a line heading out of Downtown. To the south is the river for most of the way, to the north is a hill which is a pedestrian obstacle. Much of the land it would serve is in a floodplain, and therefore undevelopable. It doesn't have the characteristics of a successful commuter rail route, which should be built to serve as many people as possible and serve areas which are transit-oriented development-ready.

Not a lot of "eyes on the street" either, but if the building is in decent shape the price is definitely right. And the location is great.

Favorite Music At The Moment?
There was definitely overlap. I knew punks who were into both bands like Misfits and GWAR as well as third-wave ska. Then there is at least one sort-of cross-over band that I can think of: Mephiskapheles.

I don't understand why state funding comes for a bad rail project, but gets pulled for a good one.

Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ the Loop
I haven't seen pictures, but I've heard from DAAP architecture alumni that it was tragic to see the historic blocks torn down. I think it was basically commercial and residential buildings of the styles present in the area -- italianate, second empire, etc.

^ There's a curb cut and a gravel/dirt driveway. With a car parked in it on Google Streetview.

^ Thanks. Huh, I thought it would be worth more than that. I might just buy it and make my own transit hub.

Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ the Loop
I was just thinking about how I'd really like to see a photo update on this project, so this was just what the doctor ordered. Thanks! :) Very weird to feel a bit of a street canyon effect in that area. It'd been wide-open for a decade or so! (And really more than that since as long as I can remember it was mostly low-density fast food buildings/mostly parking lots.) Really makes the approach to Hughes feel dramatic.

Greater Cincinnati Metro (SORTA) and TANK News & Discussion
Can't say I am thrilled by it. It does seem like they want to do something like what I suggested, but they don't come out and say it specifically. University Plaza is colored yellow, not red (indicating they have some sense that they could use it for off-street facilities), then on the site-specific slide for the Calhoun & Vine site, it says "may include future off-street development opportunity with private developer" in addition to identifying the possibility for a future off-street facility "at McMillan Street." Using a little deduction, it's clear to me they are talking about University Plaza. Does anyone know who owns UP? I know it used to be owned by Marge Schott, but that's sort of impossible now. I'm afraid that space is destined to be dead weight unless the city can exert some force, but that would probably result in a political firestorm that no one wants to touch.

Does anyone know the locations they're looking at for an Uptown transit hub? I'm thinking somewhere in the Avondale/Corryville area. I wish the city would take University Plaza by eminent domain and make Vine a through-street with a streetcar stop and transit hub. That space has great potential for improvement, and for giving a boost to Short Vine/Corryville, but the owners and Kroger seem to be united in opposition to any positive changes.

Cincinnati: Purple People Bridge: Development and News
It could be cool, but I highly doubt it. Done right, it probably wouldn't be a money maker. All the investment would have to go into making the bridge-building physically sustainable, leaving nothing for the design.

Cincinnati: General Business & Economic News
Holy crap. Then that number is huge for the city, and given the Union Twp., Liberty Twp, and Clearcreek Twp. numbers (plus whatever else is going on in the Cincy area), the Cincy metro is positively killin' it in having disproportionate growth compared to the rest of the state. 680/1200 = 57% 57% of all the permits issued in the state are in 4 municipalities in the Cincinnati area. I would guess most of the rest are in the Columbus area. But wait...I can't find a Clearcreek Twp. in Warren County. The one I can find on Google Maps is southeast of Columbus.

Haha, the guy who thinks he has objectively good taste in music loves White Zombie.

Wonder what 239 is as a percentage of all permits in the region.

Cincinnati: General Transit Thread
PANYNJ has raised tolls and fares to help finance the Freedom Tower/WTC construction, which could marginally be considered TOD, but to me is an example of problems with the PA acting as a developer instead of dealing explicitly with transportation. On the other hand, I know TOD is largely where the revenue comes in from building transit projects, and being able to capture that revenue makes such an entity more self-contained (and theoretically more efficient) and less reliant on general funds.

Trenton, New Jersey
The capital of NJ is suburban Philly? lol. That is worse than calling Newark suburban NYC. Just because a big city A's suburbs engulf smaller city B doesn't make city B a suburb of city A. If you said it about Camden, I would be sympathetic. Philadelphia might be considered a suburb of NYC on those grounds.

Cincinnati: Bicycling Developments and News
Anybody know if the feasibility study is available online? I see some low-resolution maps on the UrbanCincy article, but I'd like to see them with a higher resolution and maybe other things in the feasibility study. I am happy this is moving forward, but I have some concerns about the way this is planned out. The biggest shame about it to me is that NKY isn't included in the initial roll-out. I think the most successful area for this would be the river basin on both sides of the river. I'm afraid there will be a ton of one-way traffic down the hill from Uptown. That's not a deal-killer, but I think it makes sense to establish the program in the basin first, before taking on additional logistical challenges posed by topographic boundaries. Edit: I see the feasibility study is hosted on the city's website: http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/bikes/news/study-recommends-35-bike-share-stations/ Here's the full study: http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/bikes/linkservid/241025ED-EFF8-8292-8C6AC74C67C3F7FA/showMeta/0/

MAC: General Conference News & Discussion
The MAC gets to test its mettle in the Toledo-Cincinnati game on Saturday. Cincinnati fans are not taking the match-up lightly; they have a lot of respect for Toledo. More than a few are probably glad the Bearcats are taking on the Rockets and not the Bobcats.

Facebook
I appreciate seeing interesting articles/videos and funny pictures/videos. Party invitations and other event notices are acceptable, assuming it's not primarily for financial gain. Occasional life-update/personal posts are fine. Pictures are good as long as they don't come in trickle-form for the same event. Thought I would post this, since some people seem confused about what is actually desirable to see. I primarily want to see things of intellectual interest, or things that tickle the funny-bone.
