Funny how that video seems to have broken through to a new level of popularity. I saw it in July and sort of forgot about it, and now I am seeing stuff about it on the news and whatnot. Even a revival on UrbanOhio!

Cincinnati: Downtown: Fort Washington Way Cap
How much of a gap must there be between the caps and bridges? Can there be a bridge between the caps and bridges (say from the midpoints) for pedestrian access?

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
I always think it is weird when pitchers are considered to be pitching a good game when either luck or good fielding are responsible for no runs being scored. A pitcher could even give up a bunch of hits, but as long as runs aren't scored, all is well. I guess it makes sense psychologically. Once a pitcher gives up a run, they get discouraged. But a few hits maybe don't have the same effect. But if the hits keep coming, it's obvious they will lead to scoring at some point. Managers don't seem to make use of that obvious fact, though, until the opportunity for prevention becomes clean-up.

Cool, thanks for the primer. I'm a fairly casual sports fan, mostly paying attention to whether or not my teams win. :) But I am a casual math nerd, too, so I appreciate the stats aspect. Magic Number: 4!

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
Yeah, this is absolutely insane. On July 26, the Indians beat Verlander for the second time this season to take the 3-game series against the Tigers. They were 50-49, and although they had been playing worse than they were at the start of the season, they were still above .500 and only 3.5 games out of first place. Since then they are 5-27. That span is 1/5 of the season and their winning percentage is 0.156 in that time. To give you an idea of how bad they have been in the last month-plus-a-bit, if they continued on a pace like that for an entire season, they would end up 25-137. No team since 1900 has had a winning percentage under 0.235, and the only team ever to have a winning percentage worse than what the Indians have had during this stretch is the 1899 Cleveland Spiders, who were 20-134. Put another way, the Indians are averaging alternating between getting swept one series, and winning 1 out of 3 the next (they are slightly worse than averaging winning 1 out of 6 games). That does not make for a watchable team. Incredible. The Tribe is now tied for the bottom of the barrel in the AL Central. Never would have imagined that could happen, back in July.

Name your top 5 cities...
It seems to me that those people putting all these "top-40s" cities in their lists would not appreciate Ohio's cities if they hadn't grown up in Ohio. I would put Albany on my list over NYC. I couldn't make a list because I simply haven't traveled enough to see all the great possible choices, and most cities I have been to I haven't spent enough time in to authentically judge.

Cycling Suggestions we should all live by.
Yet you probably would walk against a don't walk signal if no one were coming. I know cyclists aren't pedestrians, but they aren't motorists either. Take my example above with the double passing. Wouldn't you rather the cyclist get ahead than have to pass them multiple times?

Are you saying that blowing red lights is an advantage of cycling? That's actually a crime. Even if there's a bike lane, red lights still count the same for everyone. I'm not sure there's any other situation in which a car would have to pass the same bike multiple times. Running red lights is a dangerous and illegal act. It's more likely to happen if the cyclist doesn't run red lights. Car passes cyclist. Both stop at red light, but cyclist gets to the front of the line. Car passes cyclist again... If the cyclist runs red lights, there's a decent chance she will get past the next light before the car gets there and she won't be passed by the car left in the dust.

In a narrow lane, you should take the lane/ride in the center. Hugging the curb gives motorists the signal that it's okay to pass you, but if they don't have a few feet of clearance within the lane, they shouldn't be given that signal.

Cycling Suggestions we should all live by.
Making an effort not to make people pass you twice takes away one of the biggest advantages of cycling, which is not getting snagged by traffic. If it's a significant problem on a given stretch of road, that road needs a bike lane.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Why would Smitherman, a councilman, rely on Cranley for news about city council's plans?

Hipsters
Operation Ivy is really far from the derivative pop punk following in the Green Day vein. Rancid might have been top-40s ready, but Op Ivy never was. I don't know if I would even consider them pop punk, their sound is more hardcore than that. Even though they did throw in the ska, which is another reason I would set them apart from Green Day. This is probably their poppiest song, and it has way more interesting stuff going on than a typical pop punk song: Just like Dead Kennedys, Op Ivy is a unique band with a unique sound. I think the hipster movement, insofar as there is a coherent movement, is a big part of the democratization of music that has happened, where anyone with a laptop can record and edit/engineer an album. The whole blogrock scene is not fundamentally elitist, though some people are snobs about it. I might add that anyone can dance to disco music. Personally, I can't stand it.

Journey to the (North) East
Did you go already? Albany is amazing. One of my favorite American cities. A strange must-see: Honest Weight Food Co-op. Wish I could remember the names of other places I have been there. It's not that big, so just explore the urban areas and you will find a lot to love. Brown's Brewery in Troy is cool. There's also a decent brew pub in Albany, the name of which escapes me. But Browns has the patio with the river view in the back. Try the Oatmeal Stout, if you like dark beers.

IMO that's a bad location. Should be in a parking spot right in front of the Y. It might be like 20 feet away, but it makes a difference.

Thanks for the lesson on stats recorded and how to interpret them re: ballparks. Makes perfect sense. I didn't even know anyone recorded the GB/FG ratio. (Not afraid to admit my ignorance, either. ;))

I agree they should be in-street. Plus, that doesn't look like a convenient spot for bike parking. Why put it along a blank wall?

I emailed the address on the J-Ride FB page and the person emailed back saying they sold the business. I guess the new owners are still at it. Or maybe someone else is.

Okay, thanks. I was basically just wondering if anyone was still running pedicabs in the city, or if the only company doing it had gone under. Do you have any insight as to how pedicab business is in the colder months?

Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel ran for US Senate.
There's your next ad. "Josh Mandel looks like he's 12. Would you let a 12 year old represent you as a United States Senator?" You could have a whole 'ager' movement. Keep claiming he hasn't proven he's 18 no matter how many times he shows his birth certificate. Insist on carbon dating him. I lol'd.
