I would think you should get something cheap and used. Try Craigslist or something. If there is a local bike collective, they might be able to help you out.

Yeah, I would have to try a bike in person before buying it online. Last bike I bought was at Reser in Newport, KY (before they opened their new location in Over-the-Rhine). More salesmanship than I would like, but keeping money local and I got to ride before buying. My online ordering recommendation was more about parts or accessories. I don't know if the shop people are annoyed that I am not having them fix my bike, or if they are annoyed that I don't know that much about bike repair, or if they are just d-bags, but I always seem to catch some attitude from them. And if I ask questions they act like they are stupid questions, or if I don't know the proper name for what I am looking for or whatever. At least I am making the effort to learn and be real about my bike ownership. Hopefully I will find a decent place at some point. I don't need to go frequently enough that I have covered that many places. I can see why people that have been into bikes for a long time are annoyed by the trend-followers getting into it now, but it seems to me the people who have been into bikes for a long time, on average, have no better an outlook or disposition. The cyclist subculture in the US and all its factions are a huge turn-off.

Amen. I hate them so much. Every one I have met has a major holier-than-thou attitude. Every time I need one, I cross another shop off the list of places I might go. And this is just from buying parts, not having them do work. Though maybe that's part of what they don't like. I also don't like some of the car-salesman attitudes I have encountered. Online ordering definitely seems like the way to go, when possible.
  4. I can't find discussion of it through search, so I will just ask here. Is the J-Ride pedicab company still in operation in Cincinnati? Their Facebook site has some semi-recent updates, but their website is down. https://www.facebook.com/Jrides http://www.j-rides.com
  5. Interesting week so far for the Big East. Notre Dame leaves. (Mostly a nonevent IMO since they weren't football members. The media is eating it up as another death blow to the conference. Rutgers handled USF last night. This was an important game for establishing the pecking order in the conference. Puts Rutgers tied with UC for first place -- 1 conference win each. Won't be a big week for the Bearcats, however, since they play a cupcake (Delaware State). Next week is another bye for the 'cats, so things in Bearcat Country will be on the boring side until they face Virginia Tech in two weeks. This schedule really sucks. It's very lopsided, with easy games and bye weeks during the first 4 weeks of the season (not that Pitt was predictably going to be easy.) I worry the 'cats will be fatigued and/or injured, with no byes left, in the second half of the season when they have their remaining six conference games, six weeks in a row.

This is my thinking, except I am not sophisticated enough to talk about pitchers like that.
  7. ^ If it contains legal details/interpretations, we do want to read it.

This thread should be locked and burned. Bigotry or not, it is full of prejudice, ignorance, and inaccuracy.

Swept the bucs. Magic number: 8! Wish they would get to 100 wins, but that seems very unlikely at this point. They'd have to win 13 of the remaining 18 games, a .722 average. Washington is the only team looking like they might reach 100, needing 11/19, or .579, which is lower than their season average of .622.

jmeck, I tried PMing you but your box is full.
  11. Liberal =/= Progressive Many "blue" regions behave similarly.
  12. From the comment section on the Enquirer article: Glad they are doing this.
  13. So bizarre how an exemption to zoning laws was built into the constitutional amendment allowing casinos. I didn't realize that was a part of it. Yet another example of why I was against the amendment when it was on the ballot: it was way too specific for codifying in the state constitution. Even though I thought support bringing casinos to the state, this avenue for doing it is critically flawed.
  14. No. Being a cyclist is more akin to being a motorist.
  15. One of the best things about cycling is it is an equitable mode of transit: anyone can be a cyclist. Any able-bodied person, anyway. Cycling advocates will inevitably fail their mission if they don't recognize and value this in their advocacy.
  16. They are still investigating whether the driver who killed Gast was at fault, as far as I know. I'm not sure whether fault is a big factor in the reaction. FWIW, I don't think race is a direct factor, either. If there were a black yuppie cyclist suffering Gast's fate, I think the reaction would have been about the same as it was for Gast. Still, I think the contrast between reactions will show that all cyclists are not seen equally by the cycling community, though the data could be muddled by factors such as an absence of bike lights.
  17. What we got is what I was expecting, but I was certainly hoping for better. They paid a lot of lip-service to urban friendliness, which turned out to be exactly as I expected it would.
  18. I am watching intently to see the cycling community's reaction to this. Everyone was quick to show support for the white yuppie who got mowed down. What will be the reaction concerning the older black dude?
  19. If we are to hold hope that the casino will bring development, it would be helpful to have the area immediately around the casino be development-friendly. This design negates from that. Rather than having windows into the high stakes poker room, food businesses could be along the Reading street wall.

Holy crap, that flying pig kite is awesome.
  21. If PUCO sides with Duke, I wonder if Duke wouldn't have an argument to raise rates or have others pay for utility relocation for road projects.
  22. He may still be drunk driving around town. I'll bet Bob Huggins is doing so in Morgantown. Unless he has seen the light with their PRT system.
  23. what a non story But, seriously, isn't redacting the final bid amount kinda crazy? It becomes a bargaining chip for other cities when they know what was offered to Cincinnati. I'm guessing that's why they wanted to keep it under wraps. AFAIK, the city had no role in shrouding the docs in secrecy.
  24. Yeah, what a dud. They obviously didn't find whatever scoop they were looking for. Even Horstman's thinking cap (it's sentient, right?) couldn't come up with a sensational story from the documents.
  25. Wow, that game was really in the bag. Then came the spectacular self-destruction.
