It reads like an echo from a forgotten time when such an article would have attracted a ton of interest. I think people are bored of the subject. It reads like a half-assed article from a time when the word streetcar would get a local news story thousands of page views and hundreds of comments.

^^ I am incapable of making such lists, but I can tell you Copenhagen would be on mine. Biking mode share is one of the top reasons, but I don't know if I can really articulate the rest. I really like the seafaring aesthetic, the architecture, the culture that allowed Christiania to exist for many years. Then there are all the men in summer wearing Capri pants and socks with sandals, eating ice cream (kidding but oh man they're everywhere).

http://www.ohiobikeways.net/ Looks like the rest of Ohio could learn from SWO in terms of implementing connected bike trails that go places. I know Cincinnati is working on connecting the urban core to the network; I hope Columbus is doing the same. From Columbus to Cleveland, this map is a total mess. Dayton and Beavercreek are really will connected. I agree it could be a regional draw. I really hope the Lake Erie and Ohio River trails have their implementation kicked up a notch.

What you guys are advocating for is discriminatory policing. You know how people say drug laws are racist? This is why. If it happens in the hood, it's a problem. If it happens on campus, no big deal. I've seen hipsters smoking weed in the patio at Neon's and the parking lot at Grammer's. I would find it outrageous if someone called the police on them. I find it equally outrageous that you guys want to call the police on someone smoking on the stoop outside their house. Worry about the litter and harassment. On Walnut or anywhere. Don't pick and choose what is offensive based on the socioeconomic status of who's doing it.

It should be okay. I for one think it is a positive that Cincy seems to be more west coast than east coast when it comes to marijuana attitudes. This should be codified into law, making minor possession the lowest law enforcement priority. Why should we reinforce conservative stereotypes about the city? Littering should not be tolerated. And most definitely not violence or property crimes.

Bollocks! I tend to agree old churches are symbolic of oppression, especially cathedrals. Martin Luther had some pretty legitimate gripes with the catholic church, gripes that applied when these old cathedrals were built. Now that religion has been democratized significantly, you can have a debate over whether it is used to control the masses, but I think that was clearly the case until relatively recently.

Jeffery, it's Riverside Drive. They are putting bike lanes on the street there, but the actual Ohio River Trail is going to be separate from that. (Sherman and jjakucyk are discussing just this.) The trail is going slooooowly, but every few months they open up a new small section. Same with the Mill Creek Greenway, which is going even slower. Wish these projects had a donor!

Driverless Cars
A good question is how much parking they will take up. There would be no real problem with them parking each other in, since they can just wake each other up and maneuver their way out, so they could park in very dense formations. If there is a reasonable push to get self-driving taxis to take over for mass transit, though, there could just be too many of them, similar to the way personal automobiles have become in cities.

I took Amtrak to NYC from Cincy two years ago and it was a bit much. Keep in mind, the Cardinal winds through the mountains and goes through DC, so it is more circuitous, making the trip 18 hours instead of 12. But the train was delayed both ways, which I hear is typical, so it was more like 20 hours each way. Yeah, you have plenty of leg room and you can get up and walk a bit, but I definitely started to get cabin fever. It was in the winter, so the daylight was short, and when it gets dark it is like the in-flight entertainment is shut down, so summer might not be as bad. If I were to go again, I would have to spring for a sleeper. That would obliterate any cost-competitiveness with flying entirely, though sharing a sleeper with someone obviously cuts the damage in half. It would be really nice to split the sleeper price a few ways and sleep in shifts. All of a sudden the whole adventure would become tolerable. But that's not realistic in most circumstances.

The grid formation the streets take on, e.g. Vine and Main running north-south and the numbered streets going east-west. Most American cities are built on a grid. Cincinnati's Downtown streets are, but for obvious reasons that stops as you ascend the hills out of the basin. Grids leave the horizon sort of empty, making cities less visually interesting. If a street curves or comes to a T with a cross street (say at a landmark building), some very stunning views can be made by filing in that void. One special thing about Cincinnati's grid is that it often does create a vista where there is a straight shot to a hillside. This is especially true looking toward the northern end of OTR. All that said, navigating a city with no appreciable grid can be very difficult (I believe Sydney has a lot of dead ends and irregularities in its street pattern, for a newish city example). There is a trade off, but also there are traffic calming benefits, making for a lot of effective side streets. Jeffery, the plan is to connect the Little Miami trail all along the river through Downtown and further west. It would also connect with the Mill Creek Greenway, which currently has a segment open by Camp Washington, Northside, Spring Grove Village. Really glad you've embraced cycling. Did the Occupy movement have any influence on that?
