Why isnt public transit free?
It takes people out of their cars (reducing congestion, pollution, etc.) and allows less infrastructure to serve more people.

Why isnt public transit free?
1. $2 (or $1.50 or whatever) is more than would be necessary to prevent the "mobile homeless shelter" phenomenon from happening. 2. That's especially true when it comes to monthly passes (which in Cincy amount to paying for two trips per workday...i.e. no discount). 3. Needing more buses, etc., to accommodate "extremely high ridership" would hardly be a bad thing.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Reserve at 4th and Race
Yes, but where are the pictures? The omission is pathetic! They are in a separate link and look awesome: http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?NoCache=1&Avis=AB&Dato=20120511&Kategori=BIZ01&Lopenr=205110802&Ref=PH&Params=Itemnr=1 Thanks.

Cincinnati: Bicycling Developments and News
This sounds like it's not going to be very important. I mean, honestly, what's so spectacular about the city's unfunded bike program? It's not terrible or anything, but it's not exactly breaking new ground. I'm very mildly curious about this announcement.

Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
Some positive press from the Enquirer! Casino-city ties drive marketing After all the votes, all the promises and all the build-up, Ohio's first casino opens Monday Alexander Coolidge, Cincinnati Enquirer Ohio’s first casino is just days from opening, amid an advertising blitz that promotes the new Horseshoe’s ties to the city of Cleveland almost as much as its slot machines and table games. It’s a strategic marketing campaign that offers a glimpse of what’s in store when Cincinnati’s casino gets close to opening next spring. Besides the expected billboards, newspaper ads and TV and radio spots, look for promotions giving casino patrons discounts at nearby restaurants, hotels and entertainment attractions. “We’re calling it Cleveland’s casino,” says John Payne, the Caesars Entertainment Corp. executive overseeing the new casino here and its sister property under construction in Cincinnati. Affordable apartments around CSU downtown?
Cincy is also ranked in top 20 for planning, but I get you on wanting to get away from the design stuff. Rutgers is one of the best planning schools and has an undergrad program. It's in the public policy school, so it's far from being design-oriented. Maybe New Brunswick isn't big city enough for you, though it's an easy train ride to NYC or Philly. (Actually, you could commute from either of those cities to New Brunswick. A long commute, but doable.) Anywho, sounds like you know what you're doing so I will leave you alone. ;-) I don't know anything about the CSU program and can't help w/ housing options. I was just curious what your reasons were, which I'm now clear on. Enjoy Cleveland! :)

NBA: General News & Discussion
Well, Newark has the Devils and Nets. But Newark identifies really closely with NY Jets/Giants so probably not a good example. Correction...Newark HAD the Nets, but no longer as of a couple weeks ago. Harrison has the Red Bulls, though, which is a stone's throw away from Newark. (Since this thread so obviously needs more MLS.)

NBA: General News & Discussion
Okay, so Cleveland should have four pro teams before Columbus has two? That is incredibly silly. Frankly, I would say Columbus should get a second team before Cincy gets a third. And Cincy should most definitely get a third before Cleveland gets a fourth. I'm not being a homer, just look at the damn metro sizes.

Ah, you're an undergrad. I am not familiar with undergrad programs, so maybe CSU is better known for that. I thought maybe your school had an exchange program with them or something. I know Ohio State and Cincinnati are ranked for their grad programs, though. Haha, nice mascot. Maybe you will stick around and try out for the mascot position. ;-P

Yes, the permanence is what helps them spur development. It also helps that they are more attractive to choice riders than buses.

I'm curious what is drawing you to CSU as a planning student.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Great news regarding Duke. Does the scope of the sewer work having been defined mean MSD is playing nice now? Are they still passing up the opportunity to make upgrades due to silly politicking? Thanks for the update. This thread has been lacking them.

Museum of Modern Art
Really great set of photos. You definitely captured how much a trip to MOMA is as much about people watching as it is about the art on display. And then some of the ways you caught people interacting, either actively or accidentally, with the displays is great. Bravo.

Pet Peeves!
Sounds like it's gotta be under warranty. 3 months old? Call Dell. I just had the same thing happen a couple months ago with a brand new Lenovo. It was 2 months old. Then it took over another month for the part to come off backorder (bad motherboard...also a "known issue"). Needless to say, I was flaming pi$$ed. Still am, really, but at least the computer works.

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
You run a greater risk of getting shot by pulling a gun of your own. If muggings were frequently resulting in shootings of innocent victims, we would absolutely be hearing about it. The Enquirer would love it. I'm not going to dig through records to prove this obvious point, but if you read the police reports of muggings and shootings you will not find muggings often result in shootings, particularly without some sort of noncompliance by the victim. Maybe as time goes on we will see some stats on what happens when CCW holders get mugged.

(Somewhat) Carless in Washington Township (the thread that is also a blog!)
Glad you've "evolved" your position on two-wheel transit. ;-) A huge part of the magic of bike riding is definitely combining it with mass transit. All of a sudden, the bus is not so restrictive, and biking can "cover" much larger distances than without the motor aid. You see how, with an improved transit network, it would be possible to go pretty much anywhere in the metro in a reasonable amount of time without a car.

Cincinnati: Brent Spence Bridge
Yes, I know. My point is that this obvious fact undermines the claim that this is about moving freight. Agreed. Let engineers decide what is an acceptable number of vehicles to cross the bridge each day and set tolls right at the amount which keeps that number of vehicles willing to pay to cross.
