  1. This is some of the most prime real estate in Cleveland. I think they could easily sell the house for $500,000. A house ON WADE OVAL!!! I agree Murray Hill, I think UC should stuff as many homes like this in the neighborhood as possible.
  2. They should put a cafe out on the mall with a lot of outdoor seating and make it open 24hrs. Basically Cafe du Monde Cleveland style.
  3. I went to Cincinnati public schools until 6th grade before moving to the east side burbs of Cleveland. My parents had no problem sending me to Cinci public schools but they would never have sent me to Cleveland public schools. I think the key difference were the magnet schools available in Cincinnati. I know many will complain that the children left behind in normal non-magnet schools are being ignored, but magnet schools are what keep many middle class Cincinnati families in the city. I think a magnet school shared between Cleveland Heights and Cleveland would be a good start. I think that a shared magnet program at John Hay in University Circle would be successful for both cities. Cleveland Heights is on the edge as far as many families wanting to send their kids to its schools any more and I think they would benefit from something like this. It would really only take one good magnet middle school/high school and a couple of decent elementary schools to "fix the system".
  4. Chagrin is not a strip! Its a triangle! Chagrin is probably the nicest but kind of uppity. I drove through Ravenna last week (while I was lost) and it looked pretty neat and I wouldn't mind checking it out sometime. This topic interests me as well, I have been meaning to check out more of these small towns. I really want to get to Oberlin.
  5. I walked by the uptown site today to check it out and it appears that it will be both 3 and 4 stories, let me explain. The first story is about double a normal story because it will be retail. In one section of the first floor it looks like there will be a loft type of thing making that section of the building 4 stories. The loft space might be in the future book store (barnes and noble i think). So most of the building will be 3 stories but with a very tall first story. With the upper stories going up now it is starting to give a dense feel to the area. I can't wait to continue seeing this progress.
  6. Yeah the market is great. The owners are really nice and the selection seems like it will be really good for the size of the place. They also have a deli and tasty prepared foods. It has some upscale foods and expensive teas, cheeses etc. that most groceries would not have.
  7. I totally agree Hts121. I told someone today that I drive home to UC on Chester from downtown and he responded whoa man right through "the ghetto". I didn't educate him at the time but a lot of people think the same thing. Heck when I first went to Case I thought that the drive through midtown was pretty rough. It may still appear that way but it really isn't as bad as it seems. I think some of the abandoned buildings along the way look particularly grim but I regularly ride my bike down Euclid with no fear whatsoever. I might not walk through there by myself in the middle of the night but really it is not that bad at all. I would rate midtown as much safer than East Cleveland and some other areas. Maybe with some of the recent demolitions (a couple of which I find regrettable but they looked scary and rough at the time of demolition) the area will start to appear better on the surface and people will feel more comfortable there.

It's funny that you bring this up because I thought the exact same thing driving through there today. It is in very close proximity to downtown, there is not much there now to get in the way of future development and it also borders CSU and Asiatown.
  10. I thought I recalled hearing that to build the 3c up to the expected 110mph capacity would cost somewhere in the range of $1.5 billion. This is still not a high speed system but would be considerably faster than the original 3c plan. If the system was built up to this level from the start what would the average speeds and trip times be? Would it need more of a subsidy than the first proposal? If the subsidy was similar but the trip times were somewhere in the range of 3-3.5 hours from Cleveland to Cincinnati I think the plan would have had more support. Would Ohio have a chance in the future to get federal funding to build the 3c to this level from the start? I also think that the 39mph number was the number 1 factor of why the 3c did not have enough support. Among people that I talked to that were not paying close attention to the 3c ordeal, the first thing they said negatively about the train was that it was a bad plan because of its speed. Among anyone with a clue, speed would not be a big issue but among the average highway driving Ohioan the 39mph figure appeared pitiful.
  11. Wow! the amount of ignorance in those comments is disturbing.

  13. I think Collinwood is a great spot for this kind of development. It is more affordable than Tremont and even Ohio City or D/S, and it is probably about as safe as they are. The problem with the east side is many neighborhoods are too far gone for people like this to move to (too much crime, too low of home values to make investing worth it). It is nice to see something else besides the near west side to appear because this neighborhood has a chance to be saved before its in real trouble. I worked on a campaign there 2 years ago and was impressed that the neighborhood is still in pretty good shape at least near the lake. I went to the ballroom a few months back but i would like to go take a look at the rest of the neighborhood sometime soon.
  14. Litt obviously dislikes the CWRU library. I know it may not be the best modern architectural statement but it is one of the most loved buildings by CWRU students. I like modern buildings a lot but I think that sometimes architects forget who they are designing buildings for. They design to build a name for themselves within the architecture community but don't really care about its occupants. I think the current CIA property would be a good location to add more residential to the neighborhood.

I was shopping in Mayfield (or whatever area is out by 271 and mayfield rd.) last winter and it felt like I was in New Jersey. What I mean by that is that most people were speaking foreign languages in a few of the stores I went to. I know that a lot of the ex- USSR immigrants are older jews that came in in the 70's 80's and 90's because of discrimination. Because many of them were older when they got here they didn't have kids so in 15 or 20 years this population might not really exist there any more.

I think that Cleveland is liberal overall with some very strong liberal pockets but I think this reputation might have more to do with a lack of a conservative voice than a strong liberal voice. There are very few Republican politicians at least in Cuyahoga county. While the county might not have a huge number of raging liberals, it has a large majority of liberal politicians. Basically there are a lot of moderate Democrats.

Yeah I think the crying is kind of weird. Either he is doing it to look like cares about the issues which I think would be dishonest and a bit ridiculous, or he really does care about the issues so much that he cries which bothers me because he can't control himself. I watched the 60 minutes segment and he was balling his eyes out. I guess it is nice to see a politician with a human side but in order to govern he will need to cool it on the tears a bit. I also take issue with his american dream story that a lot of Republican politicians use for the reason why they should govern the way they do. "He came from nothing and became speaker of the house through hard work and dedication." The attitude is that because I made a fortune after coming from a modest background, everyone should too and if you don't you're lazy. I think the American Dream is kind of dead and it takes a lot of luck along with the hard work to become really successful. These guys don't admit the luck part and don't care for programs to help those that haven't been able to achieve the dream.
  18. The Cleveland area has actually been doing pretty well during the current economic recovery. I think all of the projects going on in the city might provide some talking points for Obama although I am not really sure which ones he could claim responsibility for. I guess anything having to do with the recovery act could be highlighted and some of the stuff with manufacturing that has been happening. I wonder how much of an effect having the med mart, casino, and FEB under construction during the convention might affect our chances.
  19. It says in the article that if the cities made it into the final four they would have already passed the test for hotels and facilities. I would guess that they may make some final determinations on those issues but from the article I got the impression that those won't be the most important things.
  20. "I went to the Obama appearance for the midterms and still couldn't believe we could only fill the Wolstein Center halfway for a FREE event.." I think that might be a symptom of Obama coming to Cleveland so often. I didn't bother to go mostly because I was busy with something that day but also because I had already seen him in Cleveland 3 times. I think the DNC conventon would be a very special event though and people would get excited about it.
  21. That is an argument that has not been brought up before but I think it is really powerful. Not only would the 3-c help the blind but also people with many other disabilities. The only choice really is Greyhound which I am not even sure if the buses are handicap accessible for people in wheelchairs.
  22. I think you might be talking about the new emergency medicine building. The new Huntington bank branch is now in an addition to the first floor of the Triangle tower facing Mayfield.

  24. There was just a reference to Cleveland on SNL. It was a skit with Julian Assange making threats from prison including that wikileaks would take down Orbitz and redirect all flights through "Cleveland International Airport" Not the most flattering reference but whatever. I guess the dig is that Cleveland is bad which is not really that funny even to non-Clevelanders. It was a bit weak.
  25. I think everyone needs to be reminded that at least two other groups were planning to take the same "shot in the dark" that Cleveland is. This kind of language makes it seem like a long shot idea that carries a ton of risk. The risk was not so great to keep three groups from racing each other to build this thing first. I highly doubt that the worst case scenario of having a new convention center but with the medical thing failing will actually occur. I would think that at worst the medical mart just doesn't really meet expectations but the whole medical mart failing seems far fetched. Its great to see that groundbreaking is almost here.
