  1. This whole ordeal shows what is wrong with the american political system today. Obstructionism is used as much as it can be and not getting things done is seen as preferable to anything happening that makes an opponent look good. I may be biased but I would have to say that most of this is coming from the Republican side although Democrats are guilty to some extent too. Today's politicians care far more about getting elected than doing anything useful, all common sense is thrown out if it will win them one more vote. Partisanship is at an all time high and with no compromise nothing is getting done. Ok, I am done with my rant but I just feel that the Kasich/3-c ordeal is a sign of bigger structural government problems.
  2. I think Kasich will find out that there was really no upside to his decision on the 3-c. His ignorant supporters who thought that the money would be used for something else will be deeply disappointed that that plan did not work out. I don't think many of them honestly believed that we would lose $400 million so this might bring Kasich some backlash in his own party. He decided to make a stand on an the 3-c without knowing or caring about the facts and now he will actually have to face the reality of it. Having to give $400 million back to the Feds before you take office is not a very good start.

    That is really cool
  4. Actually you are both right. There was some concern that Cleveland does not have enough rooms but I also remember reading that it did have enough. Those estimates did not take into account the planned hotels that should be up and running by 2012 though so there should be even more than needed. There were also rumblings that Cleveland and Charlotte do not have unionized hotels but it turns out while Charlotte does not, Cleveland does but with a rival union to the one that made the claims. So it seems that both issues have been worked out and are not serious impediments to Cleveland getting the convention. As it looks like the election might be a nail biter, Ohio is really the only must-win state for Obama and the cheapest to hold the convention in so there is hope.
  5. There haven't been any updates on this lately, I guess there might not really be anything to report. They are supposed to announce the winner in the next few weeks though so we can all cross our fingers. This would be a huge win for Cleveland and give a much needed boost to the economy.
  6. If they really wanted to attract creative types they would move downtown. The last place young artistic types would want to work is in an office park in Beachwood. The current executives in many U.S. corporations grew up during the expansion of the suburbs and still love that crap. Hopefully as they retire, younger people will move in with more modern views of how to attract talent.
  7. I don't really know much about the rent price range, but I would think Detroit Shoreway would be a good fit. It has a cool neighborhood vibe, close to highway access and convenient to both Downtown and Lakewood. Would $500 be too much for a 1-bedroom in DS. I would think finding a roommate there would not be that hard.
  8. I agree MTS that new upscale retail should be on Euclid or elsewhere at street level but a few small improvements in tower city would help bring more life to what is essentially the heart of the city.
  9. It looks like they are hoping to have some upscale retail incorporated into the casino complex. I guess I just didn't realize before how integrated this would be with Tower city though so maybe some of this new retail activity can move into Tower city as well as the street level casino frontage.
  10. I wouldn't call the West bank of the flats "downtown." I wouldn't really call it a thriving entertainment district at the moment either. I think that almost everyone on here is an urbanite or else they would not already be here. I also think that University Circle is a very urban environment already and I don't think that moving it to the flats would really make it more "urban." All that said however, the powerhouse is a cool space and maybe being closer to the west side would be an asset for them. It would be more accessible to the highway too. I think the powerhouse could work but it would be nice to have something else nearby to bring a little more life to that area if the children's museum does decide to move.
  11. Yeah I thought about that too Jborger. If medical suppliers get shut out, there is plenty of space for them to lease downtown to set up their own showroom.
  12. cool! I was not aware of this project. It will be interesting to see how this project goes.
  13. Oh and maybe they can get new payment stations at the HL stops that a normal person can actually figure out. I have seen people that are either out of town or on business that look like they have a brain in their head argue with RTA cops because they couldn't figure out the stupid pay stations.
  14. They check fairly regularly on the healthline and they ALWAYS catch a few people. I have been on the HL and when the officers get on, half of the bus gets off before the doors close at E. 60th in the middle of nowhere. I think Juveniles riding free would not be a bad idea. The fares are pretty high for a teenager to pay.
  15. The big old twin apartment buildings near E. 71st on Euclid are being torn down. It is a shame because they gave a glimpse of what the old Euclid Ave. must have looked like. There are not many buildings like them left along that stretch.
  16. they are fencing in the building on the corner of mayfield and euclid, I think its coming down soon!
  17. Really I don't actually have that big of a problem with standing myself, the problem is more the overcrowding mixed with the standing. I just think 30 people standing on a bus is a lot. There are many times when older folks with canes get on and can't get a seat. There have been multiple times where there were two people with personal mobility scooters taking up the whole front section of the bus which leads to severe overcrowding in the rest of the bus. I guess my main complaint from all of this is just that it can be quite an unpleasant experience during rush hour and in no way is comparable to even a crowded train. The BRT has been successful but with all the money they saved can't they at least get a couple more buses out during rush hour. Also, although the buses are supposed to come every 5 minutes, when catching it in university circle it comes only every 10 minutes because there is also the University service and because the actual time varies it may not come for 15 minutes at times. I know University users would not want to hear this but I think the stokes service is used more and maybe there should be some rethinking of the schedule. The University has only hit 1 or 2 stations when it leaves University circle whereas the Stokes has already hit 10 or 12. I know that other buses drop people off at university but the Mayfield bus drops a lot of people on the Stokes line. I do whatever I can not to catch a bus that the Mayfield people are getting on. Overall I like the system and think that it met the cities needs well but these overcrowding issues along with the light priority issues still need to be worked out.
  18. I really wish they would would run more buses (or rapid transit vehicles if you prefer) during rush hour on the Healthline. I take it every day and the main thing I hate is that the bus is already packed by the time it gets to University Circle and I have to stand. It is the same on the way home. Standing on a train is one thing but the Healthline is still essentially a bus and is jerkier and bumpier and standing on a bus is pretty uncomfortable. Older folks or handicapped people get on and they can't even get a seat because most of the people sitting are already old or handicapped and don't want to get up. I counted almost thirty people standing the other day on a bus! I would think that it would be a huge safety hazard in the case of an accident and people standing would be much more prone to injury. Ok I am done with my rant for the day. I am glad the Healthline is being used and I want to continue using it but the last thing I usually want to do after waiting in the cold for 10 minutes is to hold on for dear life on a 20 minute bus ride.
  19. Depending on how things develop in the next couple of months, there should be a movement to hold rallies in the cities along the 3-c route the weekend before Kasich comes into office. I bet there would be a decent turnout if there is a strong facebook campaign. We still don't know what will happen before that but the sooner something like this gets started the bigger it will be.
  20. I agree about Valentino's. I have sampled pizza from every place in Little Italy while living here the past few years and it is definitely my fave and the most like what I had in Italy. It is all about the crust! crispy yet not too crispy
  21. Columbus is not getting much love here but if the Buckeyes were on the list there may be more

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/07/sports/football/07mangini.html?src=dayp This is a NY Times article about Mangini. It provides a nice behind the scenes look at him. I really like the part about the Brown's organization being a total mess when he came in.
  23. Have the rally in early January when students are on break and I would go.
  24. this makes me sick to my stomach
  25. Yeah it is a fairly disappointing design but hopefully they can continue to come up with a few minor things to improve it. I think the original was better too though.
