Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
Well that sucks...egg on my face....Stupidnews weeks...Appologies Cleveland17.. I thought it was legit when I saw the subsidized lunches number. All Hail the mighty Shaker Hts! No worries, Lakewood just seemed like an odd fit compared to most of the schools that typically are on the list from year to year. Also, if you read the list from Jay Mathews, it appears as though he doesn't have data on some schools, so perhaps Shaker Heights is missing because of that reason. I know that USNews does something similar and in the weeks following the release of their list they're constantly updating it as schools send in missing data.

I find it odd that every time someone suggests arming yourself to stay safe in one of these neighborhoods that it becomes a big joke on here.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
I'm very aware of the strong honors/advanced placement programs at Heights and the matriculation of some students to Ivy League (and Ivy League level) schools. Unfortunately the numbers of students who fit such profile are decreasing just about on a yearly basis. I think we're close to reaching a point where some will start questioning the idea of even offering such programs anymore, at least as broadly as the schools currently do. "Through the years" is an important disclaimer, because at one time, several decades ago, Heights was one of the best schools in the country. It started really going downhill in the 80s.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
Cleveland Heights has never been on that list, no surprise there, and I'm pretty sure this is Lakewood's first year on the list, which is very suspicious. It's also the first year that Shaker Heights wasn't on the list, if I recall, which is also a bit odd.

Bigger doesn't always equate to better! Except when it means pumping more smart young minds into Cleveland's economy. :)

Case is such a great asset for Cleveland, truly a one-of-a-kind institution in Ohio, even if it would be even better if it had a larger enrollment.

I'd like to see Notre Dame and either Rutgers/Mizzou hop on board, as well, to make a solid 14 team league. I want the Big East to implode, too.

Izzo could be using this as a play to get more money/years from MSU. Now some are saying that MSU may offer Izzo the job for life.

Bingo. Dolan is cheap, but he's still spending a similar amount on payroll as competitive teams in larger markets. He simply does not have the revenue. The model has changed quite a bit even in the decade since we were competitive every year.

Cleveland: Leveraging Citywide LED Contract for Economic Development
Just make the city state and more business-friendly, even if it's painful for some in the short term. We're never going to get out of this with the high taxes and overregulation we've currently got in place. And if our future is not in heavy industry, then maybe it's time to get rid of the tired old union mentality that is holding us back.

If there's any silver lining, it's that the scene at Jacob's Field last night is one that is repeated across 8-10 other cities around Major League Baseball on any given weeknight. The league has a serious problem with keeping its smaller markets competitive, and it's killing attendance. Remember when Kansas City won the World Series in 1985? Remember when Pittsburgh went to the playoffs three years in a row in the early 1990s? What the hell has happened since then?!

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
Does anyone care? There a number of former cleveland.bomb posters here on UO. Most decided that the negativity and misinformation on cleveland.bomb was too much to deal with. So they started posting here. I believe that is why you only see negative comments on cleveland.bomb because we can come HERE a place that allows us to have civil discussion (OK sometimes heated) even if we do not agree. UP is also a place for representative of developments, project, etc. to post information about their projects. That isn't going to happen on cleveland.bomb. Lastly, the management of the Plain Dealer doesn't care. That crap in the comments section helps feed into the Plain Dealers doom and gloom culture. Cleveland.com is one of the few message boards on the internet that barely moderates its comments, thus it is like flypaper for all of the trolls. Occasionally I still find myself going over there to do battle with them, but only when I'm really bored. Most of the people that post at Cleveland.com wouldn't last a day at a decent message board like this one. It's really a shame that Cleveland's primary newspaper allows such negative crap on its website. edit: I love Shooter's. Cleveland really needs to do something with the Flats area again. So much wasted potential.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Most of the crazy rumors you are hearing are pipe dreams. Forget about Paul. Not going to happen. Never. NO is changing ownership and is not going to trade away their franchise centerpiece. And if Paul WAS on the table, there would be a multitude of teams that could and would outbid us. I hear the Bosh rumor as well, but I believe that it only legitimately exists in the minds of 13 yr old Cavs fans. Once again, we don't have the assets to outbid the teams that are interested. Latest I hear is a possible deal involving the Lakers and Andrew Bynum. We don't have a young 7 foot legitimate center to offer them. Besides, Bosh would have to agree to the trade because he will be a free agent. Golden State does not have the 2nd pick. They have the 6th pick. Philly has the second pick and it has been rumored that they MAY be willing to part with it if some team will take Elton Brand and the 4 years/$60 mill+ left on his contract. I find that unlikely though. Golden State is the most realistic and intriguing possiblity to me. Although Ellis would not be my preference. He is a knucklehead IMO and cares more about personal stats. Team productivity tends to drop with him on the court. However, it is hard to judge when you play for a team like GS, so I would not completely rule him out. I would much rather take Maggette, and I hear that GS wants to rid itself of his contract. He is older but much more efficient in his productivity. To take on his contract though, I want that 6th pick. You're right, I was confusing a few of the rumors I heard mentioned on the radio yesterday (Reghi and Roda shows). It was Elton Brand's albatross of a contract that would come with the 2nd pick. I don't think anything is off of the table. The Cavs have a few chips that they can use to get better and get rid of a few big contracts. It would take a lot of work, perhaps a 3+ team deal, and probably cost the team a player like Andy or JJ, but I believe that the Cavs can get that Robin type of a player. This is, after all, the NBA, where not every team is looking to improve in the short term. Some are simply looking to cut salary.

Victor's the man and I was really sorry to see him go (unlike Lee and most of the other guys the Indians got rid of last year). I think his contract is up after this year, so hopefully the Tribe can re-sign him even if they don't really have a place for him to play every day. I want him to finish his career here.

I think the idea of getting rid of West is that hopefully you can get someone to take William or Jamison's contract, too. I'm hearing all kinds of crazy rumors, like getting Monte Ellis and the second pick from Golden State, Chris Paul and Emeka Okafur from New Orleans, or Bosh and Turkoglu from Toronto. All three offer opportunities to get better, but also require that the Cavs take on a big contract or two in exchange for one of their big contracts. It will be interesting to see how everything plays out--this is the most important offseason in team history.

Ohio: Casino / Gaming Discussion
It's this type of zero-sum thinking that is killing this state. We can grow the pie and everyone will benefit. We're not allowing these casinos to compete with casinos from out-of-state, which guarantees that most of the business is going to be local. If anything, that will cause the casinos to cannibalize other local entertainment options. What are you talking about? The casinos have to abide by the same laws everyone else does. We voted for casinos, not to change the state's liqour laws. The laws should be changed for everyone, but especially for casinos, if we want them to compete on a regional level, and not just a local level. I feel like we're recycling the same argument from before, but as I said previously, take whatever the casinos in Indiana, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Michigan are allowed to do, and let our casinos go one step further. Otherwise, most of our casino traffic will only be from local residents, and these casinos will be taking business from other local establishments. It's pretty simple to understand.

Thanks for the advice, dad! In other states, not only do they stop serving at a certain time, but they also send around the servers to collect the drinks. So ordering a double and nursing it won't work.

Things that have made me smile in Dayton
Great photos! I wish I would have explored the city a bit more when I was down there for school. Lots of cool stuff going on, the Oregon District being one of my favorite areas.

Call it a bobble, call it whatever you want, the ball was moving around in Galarraga's glove, and all-in-all the play wasn't clean. It was much closer than people seem willing to acknowledge, especially considering the umpire didn't have the benefit of seeing the play in slow-motion. Also, although I'd probably feel differently if the tables were turned, I don't believe that the pitcher should have been given the call just because he was in the process of making history. And I certainly don't feel bad for the pitcher or Detroit. The pitcher is making millions of dollars (and got a nice Corvette today from Government Motors on the taxpayer dime) and Detroit is a city that has had plenty of sports success in the past decade. The ball can't always bounce your way all the time. And it figures that the first time in a while that a Cleveland sports team catches a break is in a losing effort in a meaningless game.

It wasn't a perfect game, Cabrera took too long to throw to first and Galarraga bobbled the ball. If that play is clean, his name goes in the record books. But it wasn't. And MLB can't overturn this call, otherwise they'll be opening a huge can of worms.

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
a) So it makes sense that if I go to a bar near my house (in Cuyahoga County) that I should pay more for a drink than someone going to a bar near their house in Lake County, as an example? We're not just paying those extra taxes downtown during games, we're paying for the luxury of having these sports teams around even when we go to a local establishment. This extra tax is something that residents outside of Cuyahoga County do not pay for. b) In the case of the Medical Mart, we didn't even get to vote on that, the Commissioners unilaterally decided to raise taxes on all county residents. In all fairness, this is a problem that is caused by the professional sports leagues that pit cities against each other and blackmail us (the local taxpayers) into funding new stadiums. But if we, as a region, decide that this is an expense worth taking on, then it shouldn't just be Cuyahoga County residents, who are increasingly becoming the least wealthy in the region.
