Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
If more people carried guns, perhaps thugs would be less likely to take their chances in such circumstances.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
I'm beginning to wonder if we're still big enough to even support three major professional sports franchises. Of course football is king, but we're very fickle, more so than many other towns I'd say, when it comes to supporting our other teams. We're the smallest metro area with the Big Three (Pittsburgh and Tampa, the latter of which will probably pass Metro Cleveland in size in the next decade, both have three teams, with an NHL team accounting for one each).

Cleveland Browns Discussion
We were 15h last year (and one or two games were close to being blacked out, if I recall), but 6th or 7th in the NFL the previous three years.

Coming back to Cleveland - Advice on Neighborhoods
I think that depends on the individual. I've never had a problem walking down buckeye to 116 street. That may be fine for you, but that's not something I think that most natives would recommend to any newcomer to the area. That's a rough neighborhood with little going for it (other than nice architecture that has deteriorated due to a lack of caring by current tenants), and its problems have and will continue to spill over into the nicer parts of Shaker Square/Larchmere. At least Cedar-Fairmount is somewhat insulated.

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
When I saw this thread topped I figured someone would be discussing the Cleveland schools brawl at the zoo on Monday.

Coming back to Cleveland - Advice on Neighborhoods
Shaker Square/Larchmere is fine as long as you don't tread too far west or south.

Coming back to Cleveland - Advice on Neighborhoods
I don't make the rush hour drive, but it's never taken me more than 30 minutes to get from University Heights to Lakewood. Hts121, fair enough, as long as you allow me to bring my gun.

Coming back to Cleveland - Advice on Neighborhoods
From Lakewood to University Heights, or vice versa, you're looking at a 20-30 minute drive based on traffic/weather. It may be doable if you're only making that trip 2-3 times a week. The best way to go would be I-90 to Carnegie to Cedar (I usually sneak over to Fairmount, because Cedar gives me a headache). No need to take the odd northerly route that Hts121 suggested, as it will take longer and detour you through some very sketchy neighborhoods. And there's really no need to go through East Cleveland or University Circle. No online mapping site or GPS would suggest that route.

Mayors Courts in Ohio?
It's not as if we're talking about big cities that are using these sham courts. We're talking about mostly small villages and towns that are setting these up as a cash cow, prosecuting "crimes" that may not have even been violations if these cities didn't need the money so badly. I have a hard time believing that with some expansion the municipal courts couldn't handle the extra workload, especially if we're taking away the incentive for these little fiefdoms to create silly traffic laws and instructing their police officers to be extra aggressive. By the way, Cuyahoga has the most municipal courts in the state of Ohio, by far. Do we really have that much more crime here? I know that we are the largest county, but we have 14 of them, while Hamilton and Franklin each only have one. What's going on here? One final thought. When I was at the Beachwood mayor's court, the mayor (who doesn't have a law degree, mind you) was most certainly subjectively assessing each case, including dismissing cases and lowering/raising fines as he saw fit.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
Yes, the team is bad because of the unfair economic structure of MLB, so that means that the Indians should change their name and logo. The thing that the Indians need most is for Selig to pull his head out of his behind and stop allowing teams to be good just because they play in a large market.

2010: Top 10 Cities for New Grads (CINCINNATI!)
Some of those for-profit trade schools are indeed ripoffs. But I'm thinking more along the lines of a cooking program or carpentry program at Tri-C. Things that aren't taught in traditional four-year colleges.

I dont agree that people think it's a ticket to the middle class. I think people need to cut back and live within their means. You have or buy 2 cars, $220 sneakers, but you're barely making it and living paycheck to paycheck. Thats the real problem. You're right. Kids think it should be a ticket to the upper class. :)

Mayors Courts in Ohio?
I'm talking about the mayors courts, not the muni courts. In my only experience in mayors court in Beachwood, the mayor indeed presided over the session and decided on cases. This isn't uncommon for such "courts." It's a money grab for these communities, plain and simple, even if it's not the mayor sitting on the bench.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
People analyzing and talking about the LeBron story are all contradicting each other. Jim Brown says that Cleveland fans are putting too much pressure on him, while Buzz Bissinger (who knows LeBron and wrote a book about him) says that Cleveland has been too soft on James and he'd benefit from going to a place like New York where he'd be pressed to raise his game to another level. Damned if we do...

Mayors Courts in Ohio?
You're right, in all honesty, mayors courts are really a symptom of the larger problem we have here with the existence of so many individual municipalities. I don't think the state government has the guts to make these tiny villages merge with their neighbors, so attacking the legality of mayors courts may be a way around that, without committing political suicide.

College is an expensive scam, and no one has the guts to tell kids that it's not for everyone. Instead, we have this idea in our society that all should be going to college, and that if one doesn't go, that they're a failure. This problem is perpetuated by the government that throws assistance towards anyone and everyone that comes calling for it. More demand means higher prices, which is why tuition costs have gotten out of control in recent decades. There is nothing wrong with trade and technical schools, and the the reality is that more kids should be going that route after high school. Also, many of us that grew up in the boomin' 90s were lead to believe that going to college automatically meant a ticket into the middle class. Unfortunately, times have changed, and many are having trouble adapting to the new reality.

Mayors Courts in Ohio?
Doing some research, it looks as though Ohio might be the only state with mayors courts. In reading some more about them, I'm finding that numerous people have been critical of the courts, and the potential conflict of interest they present with a mayor making a decision on a case that affects his city's coffers. What I'm seeing is that a number of these tiny municipalities (in Cuyahoga County and around the state) rely on money made from these courts to stay afloat financially. Are you familiar with mayors courts? Do you think these are a problem? If so, what can/should be done to eliminate them on a statewide basis?

Not really, it's a family? I know western CH has a lot of young Indians (and Asians) who attend school at CWRU.

Cool Cleveland Businesses
CLE Clothing is awesome. A couple of other local clothing stores that make similar types of t-shirts, but their names escape me at the moment.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Exactly. For all of the pressure that we've put on him to win a title, in the past when he hasn't come through, we've still very supportive of him. He's not going to get that leeway in New York. I think the biggest reason why things may have changed a bit for us fans after this recent loss is that: A) We're still trying to understand what happened to him that lead him to play so dispassionately in games five and six, and B) We're preparing ourselves for the fact that he may leave.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Which is too bad because on Friday last week Rome was sticking up for the city when his listeners wanted to rag on Cleveland as losers. He said the Cleveland fans were the real victims because all we did was kiss his ass for 7 years, I was glad he stood up for us, but I wish he wouldn't have read that email at the beginning of the show. Rome is a pretty strong advocate for Cleveland (at least based on his limited experiences here). He's done a bunch of tour stops here, and even this week, while bashing the video, he qualified the bashing as reflective of the participants / makers, not of Cleveland as a whole. The callers, on the other hand, were not so kind. But the opinion of a caller on a sports talk show is not one that keeps me up at night, unless I'm up late at night listening to a sports talk show. When I was younger I used to listen to his show more frequently (late 1990s) and I do remember that Cleveland was always considered one of his favorite/best tour stops.

What's wrong with the stadium? It looks to be in good shape and the exterior isn't really outdated or anything.

And unfortunately in doing so they must kick Cleveland/Northeast Ohio to make their point about how much "better" these other places may be...

Hts121's posts were pretty factual. The Census Bureau website has most of the information you're looking for, including some great maps, though the most detailed stuff is going to be based on 2000 data.
