Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
I think this post is kind of a contradiction. If we're going for more localized/neighborhood schools, I think options are going to be limited. In fact, in most suburban areas in Ohio, that's already what we've got. Parents of kids are assigned to a local school based on geography, and that's that. If you're a family in an inner-ring suburb with troubled schools, your kids are stuck, unless you have money to send them to a private school. At least in the larger urban districts, there is some choice available. Families in Cleveland have the opportunity to send their kids to John Hay or the School of the Arts. In Columbus it's the highly-rated Alternative High School. And in Cincinnati there's Walnut Hills. While more localized control might help to some degree in urban districts, you have to be careful about limiting choices.

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
If your parents are the type that would get into fights over or wait in line 3 hours for a 23 cent pizza from Papa Johns, I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to get them to sign a piece of paper for a free Pizza Hut pizza, as long as you'd give up half. Maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but I thought it was at least partially based on the honor of the parents. Not a big problem at Canterbury Elementary School back in the late 1980s/early 1990s.

Southeast Cleveland (Spring 2010) - Part I
Nice photos of a great area that has seen some serious decay. Good news is that it probably can't get much worse. Hopefully. Also, I always thought the former St. Benedict's Parish was to the south of Benedictine High School. Not sure what was to the north, maybe the old St. Andrew's?

Teaching Chinese is a great idea. Hopefully it's long-term and they're starting young, because I get the impression that it's a very tough language to master!

I think they had you "prove" that you read the book by forcing you to get your parents to sign off that you completed it.

I think vaguely remember doing something like that. I also know of area schools that give out Cavs tickets to kids who are high achievers. And perhaps as punishment, those who don't do well in school should be forced to attend an Indians game.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
It's crazy, I feel the same way, too. I no longer see him as the best player in the game. And as I was watching the press conference last night, I noticed that I no longer see him as a Cavalier, a Clevelander, one of us.

Brookings' The State of Metropolitan America (Urban Ohio spin)
Agreed. To me this has about the same value as a Forbes list. In fairness, from what I've seen, this report isn't going to far to make valuations about the data--they've simply collected it and presented it. I don't see a huge problem with the way they've classified the cities, and I do appreciate them at least abstaining from referring to Cleveland and similar cities as the "Rust Belt."

Brookings' The State of Metropolitan America (Urban Ohio spin)
I think the northern Summit County suburbs have ties as close or closer to Cleveland than Akron even, yet they're in Akron's MSA. I understand (sort of) why the Census Bureau does it like that, but for exercises like the one that Brookings has undertaken here, it doesn't make sense to look at them as separate areas. CSAs would most certainly work better for Northeast Ohio. But on the flip side of the coin, I don't think CSAs would work well for the much larger metropolitan areas where there truly may be multiple classes of economies (thinking about NYC area or Southern California). So if they were going to use CSAs and MSAs concurrently in their study, I guess they'd have to make a subjective call about which metro areas should use CSA and which should use MSA. :wink2:

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
All of these curses/gods/culture of losing hypotheses are ridiculous. It's nothing more than an unfortunate coincidence that none of our sports teams have won anything in almost half a century. We're not any more or less deserving than any other city. No matter what we do, one day it will happen. Go to sleep knowing that there's nothing you could have done to get the Cavs to win this year, and there's nothing you'll be able to do to get them to win next year.

I prepared myself for this after Tuesday night's loss, so this is actually less devastating than it would have been had the season ended in game 7 against Orlando or L.A.

Is this a safe area in Cleveland Heights? (I'm in a bit of a time crunch)
That area is decent, especially for a renter.

The Magic should have never been in that position with the Celtics last year. Garnett wasn't even playing in that series.

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
What can we do to fix education in Ohio? Some ideas/areas for improvement: -Fixing the State Funding Scheme. How can it be done? What do other states do? I know this is a problem, but admittedly, I don't know a great deal about the details of it. -Improving School Choice. As of now, a family's local public school options are limited by geography. Certain zip codes are deemed more desirable simply because they allow access to "better" schools. Can we move away from such a system where geography ties a family down to a certain school? -School/District Consolidation. Our state has far too many school districts. Since I know this area well, Cuyahoga County has something like 33 school districts, some very tiny and seemingly unnecessary. -Segregation by Class and Race. Despite "separate but equal" being declared unconstitutional several decades ago, schools/districts in Ohio have still managed to become very segregated based on self-selection. This may be more of a symptom of some of the above problems. These are just a few ideas and problems that I feel need to be addressed. What are your thoughts on problems and solutions dealing with PK-12 education?

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
It's not as much about the individual's choice as the city's choice and I do believe there are multiple options there thus providing incentive to private business to be competitive. Interestingly enough, I'm aware of some Geauga County townships where trash removal is left up to the resident, not the local government. Might now work or make sense in an area like South Euclid, however.

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
South Euclid is exploring contracting with Cleveland for garbage (and possibly snow) removal: http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/05/cleveland_officials_talking_to.html If I'm a South Euclid resident, I'd be wondering about how this is going to save money, or even provide equal or better services than what they've currently got. And the SE service director's comment about private business is pure nonsense.

Cleveland: Heights Area News & Discussion
I'd like to hear some ideas about how Cleveland Heights (and University Heights) can encourage more middle-class families to relocate to the city, and how the perception of the local schools can be improved so that these families, current or future, will feel comfortable in utilizing them.

There is some talk that LeBron may start guarding Rondo (at least for portions of the game). I wouldn't mind seeing that.

India and Britain are each several times more densely populated than Ohio and the United States. Rail in those places makes much more sense.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Again, I don't think this is about being fairweather. It's not like thousands of Cavs fans started rooting for the Lakers or Magic after Monday night's loss. I think many of us were simply deflated and thinking "here we go again with another Cleveland sports team."
