  1. Yeah that's undoubtedly true. I guess I just feel like we have more deal mall square footage here, particularly on the eastside (Euclid, Randall Park, Severance, Richmond [soon], etc.), than other areas, per capita. Statistically that seems like a fair way to measure it, though I certainly don't have time to do the research and compare this area to other regions.

Not bad as a side gig. Any interesting stories? I'm glad that I'm not the only one that gives Uber/Lyft drivers cash. I've never actually signed up for either service, but I've been along for rides when other friends have used these apps and I always give an extra cash tip. Hopefully Uber/Lyft aren't going to somehow find a way to screw drivers based on this behavior from riders.
  3. Damn, I go on a Caribbean cruise for a few days and I miss this bombshell?? That was one of my hangout malls. Another was Tanglewood Mall, but it was barely a mall. Randall Park was where we all went because it had EVERYTHING. I remember going there right after it opened in 1976 and seeing one of the department stores (Hornes?) still under construction. I stood inside the mall, looked through a peephole into that department store and saw a bulldozer working under the store's finished roof when the floor was still dirt. That memory stuck with me because it was so unusual to see a bulldozer working indoors. I don't if it was really out-of-the-blue. I think that demolition has been slated for some time now. It will definitely be strange driving by there each day and seeing chunks of it missing. I remember spending time there with friends after I first got my driver's license in the late 1990s. Pretty sure it was already well past its prime at that point and my parents "gently" suggested that I no longer go there because of safety. One thing that still stands out in my memory is the store that sold (amongst other weapons) real ninja stars...kind of an odd mall item. Taking the bigger picture view, it's sad how easily and shamelessly that we've thrown away our malls in this region. There are lots of reasons why this has happened, but perhaps it's time that our suburbs stop fighting each other to hitch their wagon to the short-term solution of large-scale retail centers.
  4. I didn't read the whole list or the criteria (whatever nonsense they used to justify their listing), but the last sentence confused me. It almost made it sound like despite some of the rough patches the city has dealt with over the past half-decade, we still have a lot going on here.
  5. Maybe the thread bump was in honor of the final year of East Cleveland's existence and the future of the Forest Hill neighborhood being fully consolidated within Cleveland Heights as it should be. ;)
  6. Lots of good pictures, but why the bump?
  7. I wonder if there is any connection between indoor malls and these types of occurrences or if outdoor malls also see this happening?
  8. Well Claddagh at Legacy Village has announced it will be closing. I think this has been an on-and-off rumor for at least a few years...now it's official.
  9. Weird, I was just there for the first time ever Saturday night. Great selection of brews and it seemed to be doing well...was this an unexpected closing?
  10. What's the community going to do? Oh, expand the mall! Great idea in an era of increasing online shopping and decreasing need for brick-and-mortars space. This will lead to lower costs to rent space and more...you guessed it...stores like Next. I can't help but feel a little giddy when I see stories like this out of Poachwood. They want it all, they get it all. All of it.
  11. Nothing like a brawl at one of the area's supposedly nicer malls to ring in the holiday season! http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2014/12/29/video-a-fight-in-beachwood-mall-the-day-after-christmas
  12. Likewise, University Heights may also be an option for the OP, as well. Any further east and the suburbs start losing what I believe this person seems to be looking for.
  13. Each suburb has its own little neighborhoods so it really depends. In general I'd stay away from the northern parts of each city.

By the way, of all the names I've heard floated in recent days as an inside "replacement" for Andy, Brandan Wright is the one that's the most enticing for me. He's a bit undersized and arguably more of a PF than a C, but he's an efficiency machine and does have some rim protection abilities.

And they get terrible hurricanes which are difficult to predict and cause massive destruction and death. I can deal with a few months of winter without having to worry about that roll of the dice.
  16. Brooklyn doesn't exactly have the most stellar reputation of quality leadership, either. And I wonder how much taxes come into play when Ikea is looking for a site? FWIW, Transportation Boulevard is still slated to be expanded. Hopefully it happens sometime in my lifetime.

I hate to say it, but I was in favor of trading Varejao before this injury happened. I was in favor of trading Varejao before his last THREE injuries happened. I like him a lot, but you can't count on him for a full season. This isn't really a surprise, is it? We weren't going to see him on the court for 90-100 games.
  18. Bridgeview is badly tangled in legal disputes. I suspect IKEA wants a site they can own free and clear -- today. A Gordian knot would be a better word. No major corp is going to want anything to do with that. Plus the site is unfairly tagged with the same reputation as Methane Hills. Eh, it does sound like a corporation is moving forward with the outlet mall at that location and there should be progress in 2015. It's just taking forever and it's wishful thinking on my part to see Ikea swoop in and put their Greater Cleveland location there. No one will ever accuse Garfield Heights leadership of being forward-thinking. Even despite the battles over the pathway of I-480 through the city that occurred half a century ago, GH ended up with a prime asset (its location) that it hasn't been able to capitalize on. Regardless, for a regional draw like Ikea, the difference between Brooklyn and say Garfield Heights is negligible. There are other retailers that probably would prefer closer proximity to the Gates Mills-Beachwood-Pepper Pike-Chagrin Falls-Solon-Aurora-Hudson corridor than to the westside, but for Ikea it doesn't matter, they get that crowd just by showing up someplace in Northeast Ohio.
  19. Going south on Warrensville through this intersection early in the morning is a breeze. The light timing even seems shorter than before, which makes sense. Going north on Warrensville in the afternoon is a nightmare. Traffic is consistently backed up around the "triple lights" right before Chagrin, and people tend to have quite a bit of road rage.
  20. Yeah but it seems like there's been quite a lot of foot-dragging with that development. Something needs to happen with that plot of land...it really is a prime piece of real estate with high visibility, and Garfield Heights needs the revenue. Of course I would prefer office space, but that's unlikely, so the next best thing would be something high profile. The Ikea idea is a stretch, just thinking outside the box a bit.
  21. Allow me to refresh your memory.... http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/03/city_view_shopping_center_in_g.html Oh, no, I'm perfectly aware of that. But on the other side of the freeway--not on the former landfill--is open land available for development. It's actually called "Bridgeview Crossing," and there has been some recent talk of putting an outlet center there. However it's been slow-going but if Ikea came in and put in an offer I'm sure they could obtain the land. I'm just uncertain if there is enough space.
  22. What about some of that undeveloped land in Garfield Heights that has been earmarked for retail but sat vacant? That's also right there on I-480 near I-77 and not far from I-271 in a pretty centrally-located location.
  23. Being a bit of a stathead, I like looking at the ratings from KenPom and Sagarin, among others. Anyways, in terms of conference rankings, Sagarin actually has the Big XII as being the highest-rated conference.
  24. It's called cream-skimming. The "best" charter schools have perfected the art of controlling their enrollment to the point that comparing them to your average CMSD school becomes an apples to oranges discussion.
  25. I'm biased, but I think that's the right call. Ohio State had nice road wins at #7 Michigan State, at #26 Minnesota, and a neutral field dismantling of #17 Wisconsin. Yes that loss to Virginia Tech was ugly, but that 90 days ago and the Buckeyes have more than made their case since then.
