Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Before seeing the video, I was leaning towards thinking the police were in the right. After all, if I'm in a public place and somebody (regardless of age) is waving around what looks like a real gun, I'm running away and calling the police with the hope that they get the situation under control. If that means that a strong show of force is needed against an insubordinate suspect, I'm okay with that. However, after seeing the video, it's hard to see things clearly, but I'm no longer certain that the police behaved appropriately.

Canton: Pro Football Hall of Fame Village
Looks like Fawcett Stadium will be significantly renovated and a Hall of Fame village will be built alongside it. Oh and the stadium's also getting a new name: http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2014/11/tom_benson_hall_of_fame.html

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
Cleveland Heights has its own problems...many of which actually stem from its border with/proximity to East Cleveland. If I'm a resident or leader in Cleveland Heights, I want nothing to do with any of the EC area north/west of Terrace Road. I've long advocated that Cleveland Heights needs to find ways to put up more barriers between itself and East Cleveland. Superior Road acts like a crime expressway, bringing the down-the-hill problems into the Heights.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
I'm absolutely shocked. (Not really.) The few times I went (usually being dragged there by friends), the staff was consistently rude and arrogant, the service was subpar, and the food was not worth the price.

Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
Everyone has their opinion, but I thought that Hot in Cleveland was absolutely terrible. I watched for about 4-5 episodes, but I felt it was a dud after the first episode and only stuck around for a bit longer to see what other local references they would make. The jokes they made were cliché, the story lines were unoriginal, and most of the characters were annoying and unlikeable. If I hadn't opened this thread, I would have never guessed that the show lasted six seasons; most shows like that are axed much sooner.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Well because of the Arizona State loss and because TCU looked very pedestrian on the road at Kansas, many prognosticators are putting the Buckeyes at 5th. We'll see what the committee says. It's really too bad that Miami couldn't finish the job against Florida State, though. Also of note, folks are still giving Mississippi State credit for playing 'Bama tough on the road and most are putting two SEC teams in the Top Four. We're really going to need Auburn to beat Alabama and/or Ole Miss to beat Mississippi State.

I think St. Louis can support a team even with Kansas City having one.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Agreed. The loss to VT was horrible, but if/when the Buckeyes finish off a 12-1 Big Ten title run, that game will have occurred exactly three months earlier and Ohio State will have transformed into a completely different team (they really already have). It will be hard to hold that loss against them, especially if they've got wins on the road (MSU) and on a neutral field (Nebraska, potentially) against Top Ten conference opponents. Winning out is the minimum that needs to happen, but realistically, we do not control our own destiny, not with VT spiraling. We need at least one shocker to knock off one of the other teams in front of us; it can't be just when two teams already ranked ahead of us play. Here's what's guaranteed: *One team from Oregon or Arizona State will lose again. *One team from Alabama and Mississippi State will lose (again). Here's are some possible shockers that would really help OSU's cause: *Ole Miss at home knocking off Mississippi State. *Arizona at home beating Arizona State. *Kansas State going on the road beating Baylor. If Ohio State wins out, the lowest I see them being ranked is 6th, so to feel really good about their chances I think they need two surprising outcomes. In fact, I can't see the Buckeyes jumping Mississippi State or Florida State if either ends up with only one loss. Other things to consider: *How would the committee look at a situation where no SEC team finished with less than two losses? *Further, would the commitee roll over and take two teams from the Big XII without that league having a title game?

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Is this actually still the case? Is the corporate/business side downplayed with the new selection committee? I thought they were meant to inject more impartiality and look at teams based on their true merits? Why would Tom Osborne or Condi care if a team travels well? Yeah that's my understanding as well. Though nothing is more impartial than a well-designed computer ratings system, which is what they've actually gotten rid of since going from the BCS to the CFP.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Last night's game is a preview of what this team can really do and it's exciting to see them coming together so soon. Not sure if this is going to be what we see from them consistently, or if it's just a flash, but either way that's why this team was put together like this. I think the pieces of our "Big Three" have the chance to be better overall and more complementary to one another than what Boston had and what Miami had. We have three guys that are essentially interchangeable parts and really good no matter what role they're taking on. Beyond the Big Three, I want to see more of Joe Harris. He was only 1-4 from long-distance last night, but this kid can shoot, and when the Cavs drafted him (before LeBron agreed to return) I was bullish on his potential. He has a chance to be another big-time perimeter weapon that our distributors can take advantage of.

Here's a piece about SEC bias in the polls, based on statistical analysis: http://regressing.deadspin.com/the-sec-really-does-benefit-from-media-bias-in-polls-1652415873 Almost makes you think we should hold off on rankings until at least a few weeks into the season.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Well the Buckeyes are up to 7th/8th in the polls, but because of who's in front of them and who those teams play, I think there's a very real ceiling as to how high OSU might get. One of the PAC-12 teams is likely going to fall below Ohio State, another SEC team is likely to drop below the Buckeyes, but that puts them at 5th or 6th at best. The good news is that Nebraska is up to 11th in both polls. Hopefully they keep winning and rising so that would give Ohio State another quality opponent if/when they meet in the B1G title game. It's a long-shot, but the Buckeyes are still alive.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Guys, if Nebraska wins out up until the B1G title game, they'll almost certainly be in the Top 10, which gives either OSU or MSU another high quality opponent. This is the best case scenario for the B1G East champion looking for a playoff spot. In fact, the best case scenario for the entire league would be for Nebraska and either MSU/OSU to win out. That would pit two one-loss squads against one another in the B1G title game and give the league an outside, but legitimate, shot at getting a team into the dance.

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
OK, and how does that affect the merits of the Cleveland bond refinancing? Sorry, I wasn't trying to make a point either way, just thought it was an interesting fact to throw out there, really more in your defense, as Dean seemed to be implying that you're hypocritically sitting pretty in the suburbs asking for taxes to be raised in Cleveland...when in reality, you town has actually consistently put its money where its mouth is when it comes to supporting students and getting school bond issues passed.

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
Every student in CMSD receives free breakfast, I know that for certain. What I'm less certain of is how much of that tab is picked up by the Feds, because they're paying for a least part of it. However all of that does go into the per pupil expenditures number, which to outsiders provides easy fodder for believing that their money is going towards providing an extravagant education to poor minorities.

MSU is coming off of a bye week, which kind of irks me, but I'm not sure how much it matters since the Buckeyes had Illinois taken care of early on last week.

Governor John Kasich
What else is new in an off-year election? These statewide and statehouse elections are handed on a silver-platter to the GOP. I would like to blame this on "the people," but the system is rigged from the way districts are drawn, to the amount of money in campaigns, to who has access to get their names on the ballots, to when voting occurs, even to the way that elections are decided (i.e. first-past-the-post). Until we make some serious to all of these aforementioned issues, we'll keep ending up with these subpar politicians that don't really represent the views of the people or have any motivation to do so.

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
Lakewood also has some of the highest property taxes in the state. Last night was just another election reminder of how badly we need to fix the school funding formula in this state and make it less-reliant on property taxes. Additionally, while this is hindsight, it really is too bad that we have so many school district divisions in this area (and state). As I watched and read about some levies passing and others failing, it's really sort of depressing realizing just how unequal things are between the districts.

Nice... Joking aside, they have a chance to quickly change the storyline tonight by going on the road and beating the team that will likely be their biggest challenge in the Eastern Conference.

Suburban Cleveland: Development and News
Clevelander17 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Northeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionTwo other thoughts: 1) The schools may be decent now, but it's worth pointing out that the demographics are changing fast in a way that scares off people who tend to look at schools first in a community. 2) The old movie theater (previously Boneyard) will be reopening as a bar at some point with a new theme. It was just announced a week or two back, but now I can't remember what it's going to be.

2014 Gubernatorial Election
Ken Blackwell was pretty terrible, too. It would be nice if we didn't have a gerrymandered, extremist state congress that didn't make Kasich look like a moderate on a few rare but high-profile occasions. With any luck the Democrats may win one or two of the down-ballot state executive elections and challenge Kasich on some issues.

2018 FIFA World Cup
Not to mention their treatment of homosexuals and the lesser offense (but still disgusting) killing of stray dogs in Sochi. Russia is a terrible place. Why are they being rewarded with these types of events? (Though if you watch John Oliver, maybe it's not really a reward to host the World Cup.)
