The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Way too close for comfort, but it's always been tough for the Buckeyes to win at Penn State, especially at night.

Hopefully Urban gives Baker a chance to tryout at running back. I believe that's part of the reason why he chose Florida to begin with.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
While this is indeed partially true (and indeed as has been pointed out, Dayton is overwhelmingly in support of OSU), the question was whether or not OSU had more fans in Cincinnati than any other team. And based on the data presented, and other data I've seen over the years, I do think it's safe to say that a plurality of college football fans in Cincinnati pull for the Buckeyes.

2014 Gubernatorial Election
While this is definitely true, it doesn't mean that he won't try to enact a few high-profile, extremist conservative ideas to try to prove his bona fides to Republican primary voters. It wouldn't be the first time someone like Kasich has taken such action to try to play to a primary base. We here in Ohio could be stuck with bad policy for years after Kasich has left office because he was trying to prove something.

2014 Gubernatorial Election
Here's the problem. If Kasich is already behaving like this on an issue that he has previously taken a moderate position, it's scary to think about to what other lengths he will go over the next few years to try to prove that he is a legitimate conservative to the extremists that overwhelmingly dominate the voting base in the Republican presidential primaries. Ohio is too purple to end up becoming a conservative extremist policy laboratory.

2014 Gubernatorial Election
It's moments like these when I feel the need to ask you if you still really believe that this guy isn't a partisan hack?

2014 Gubernatorial Election
Good question. Guy seems like a career politician. I'm not sure he's ever held a private sector job. There's an empty hole someplace that perhaps he could consider crawling back into.

2014 Gubernatorial Election
According to the Law of Reagan, if you're a politician serving in an executive role, you get credit for a strong economy even if it happens several years after you've left office. Therefore at the moment I think it's wonderful that Ohio is benefitting from the Strickland Recovery despite Kasich's best efforts to balance budgets on the backs of the little guy.

2014 Gubernatorial Election
My first instinct while reading that headline and skimming the story was to find out who nominated that judge. I then began to feel really sad that we live in such a partisan world that that tends to always be my first instinct when reading political stories that involve the judiciary.

2014 Gubernatorial Election
It's perfectly legitimate for a newspaper to refuse to endorse anyone, and in fact I'd like to see it happen more often. Pretty sure that the PD did it few Presidential election cycles ago.

2014 Gubernatorial Election
I believe that's Jim Renacci running those ads and I also was thinking the same thing. I would generally agree that things in Ohio have gotten better since 2010, but I also believe that that would have happened regardless of who was in office because the nation as a whole has been working its way out of a recession since that time.

Cincinnati Public Schools: Development and News
Whether the school is public, Catholic, charter, or anything else, one thing always remains true: If you can somehow control "inputs" (i.e. students that enroll), you have much more control over "outputs" than anything you might possibly do regarding actual academics. Personally I think that urban/inner-ring public schools need much more freedom to get rid of problem students to create more positive learning environments.

Zip Code Lookup
I wanted to like this website, I really did, but some of the definitions are just bizarre. For instance, the leading statistical category for 44122 (which is eastern Shaker Heights and all of Beachwood) is "exurbanite."

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
Ever since the CHPD played hardball with that Adam Ferrise clown on a story last year, the amateurs over at NEOMG have had CH crime under a microscope. The CHPD used to play games with crime stats, but that hasn't been the case for at least 3-4 years. The situation hasn't gotten worse in CH, however the aforementioned media situation and a few high-profile leads people to believe it has. Worst of all, the comments section on Cleveland.com is the Wild West and the trolls eat this stuff up. CH is an easy target for many of them because of its reputation as a liberal stronghold.

Ridesourcing
Seems to me that the owners of both Lyft and Uber are engaging in scummy activities which hurt their drivers and riders, too, even if they're not rent-seeking or putting up barriers like traditional cab companies do.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
The new floor is a little too busy for me. I prefer simplistic. Also I don't understand the point of the navy blue. The team's colors are now just wine and gold, right? Blue hasn't been used since LeBron's first tour here and unless that's changed it shouldn't be part of the court's color scheme.
-
Ridesourcing
The business model is intriguing but ultimately the people that run these companies are making money bypassing regulations and in doing so placing much of the burden and risk on drivers. It may be decent money until that first big incident or accident...or hint or allegation. ;)

Shaker Heights: Van Aken District Transit Oriented Development
Quick update: It does seem that things have gotten a little better as I suspect they've fixed the actual signal timing to adjust for the fact that Northfield is no longer in use. Still way too much traffic being diverted onto a street that can't handle it, though. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but Warrensville Center around there probably needs to be at least three lanes each direction so I hope that that's part of the plan. Otherwise people in the surrounding neighborhoods might seeing much more traffic, even if it's technically illegal for commuters to use those streets. ;) Yep, one of those lights is for UH Admin traffic, and the other is for the post office/apartment buildings. But these parking lots both connect (or could easily connect) with the diverted Northfield Road. It probably makes sense to eliminate one light and force those folks to use the Northfield re-route. (Which itself at times is really backed up.)

Shaker Heights: Van Aken District Transit Oriented Development
Well, as I feared, Warrensville Center Road just south of Chagrin is a parking lot--in both directions and both times of the day that I went through it today. I really hope they're planning on re-thinking traffic signals in the area, but I'm not optimistic that there's much that they can do to fix the problem to the point that it's as smooth as it was before. I think that I may just start turning left on to Scottsdale to avoid this mess.

The old logo was a bit juvenile-looking.

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
I know that large urban districts like CMSD can't help themselves whenever someone wants to offer them "free" money, but the Gates' style of vulture philanthropy in education is completely misguided if you take them at their word, and even scarier if you connect the dots and realize what their ultimate goal may actually be. If CMSD had any real leaders, they could recreate the very basic tenets of what makes a small percentage of charter schools successful without allowing corporate raiders to get their hands on taxpayer money. The sad part is that many liberals and Democrats have even been tricked into believing that ceding money and control to outside, unaccountable interests is the way to go.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
If this Browns season is a wash (sorry we've only had one game, but I'm not optimistic), wouldn't it be better for the Browns if Gordon was out the entire season anyways? I mean, if he plays just 4-6 games or whatever, it doesn't really help the team make a playoff push, and it will cost the franchise a year of contractual control, right?

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
I agree, this proposal really hits "edge cities" (Beachwood, Solon, Westlake, etc.) hard, which is part of the reason why I like it. These cities--although have some very wealthy residents--are also big-time moochers. My hope is that if something like this were to pass, the residents in these places would not only have to start paying their fair share (of which many are not because of the way the system is set up) AND it may even force some of them to consider regionalizing services or even merging with neighbors. Ultimately, if this thing passes, two types of places would be hit hard: Large urban cities like Cleveland and Cincinnati and a few dozen outer-ring suburbs around the state. The latter would simply have to reshuffle finances or ask residents to pay more, which is probably doable. The large urban cities have no legitimate short-term recourse. I still support a major overhaul of the system even if this isn't logistically feasible.

Shaker Heights: Van Aken District Transit Oriented Development
I drive by this new road every day but never realized that this was the Northfield re-route. I sure hope that this does not put too much more congestion on that part of Warrensville Center Road.

NHL: General News & Discussion
Enough with these teams in desert/tropical cities...and in fact enough with expansion. They should just move some teams to get these cities in the mix. Quebec City definitely needs a team, but rather than another Toronto club, how about expanding to Hamilton, Ontario? Seattle? Okay, I guess.
