What Would You Re-Name the Cleveland Indians?
I think that this claim is definitely up for debate. Here's an excellent piece from Belt Magazine (not sure if this has been posted) that discusses this bit of lore and other issues surrounding Chief Wahoo: http://beltmag.com/secret-history-chief-wahoo/

MLB: General News & Discussion
Actually, 1995 was the year we came closest to having an All-Ohio World Series. The Tribe made it, but the Reds were swept by Atlanta in the NLCS. In 1994, I'm not sure either team was going to win their respective pennants, particularly the Indians who would have had to go through tough New York and Chicago ballclubs.

NBA: General News & Discussion
Do you think Bosh is a max level talent at this point? I mean, if the Heat were to implode and he opts out, does he get top dollar from another team?

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I like Derrick Favors, and throwing in a few other first round picks is very enticing. Not sure who they'd take at #5 though. The good news is that it seems like every hour we're hearing about another team willing to throw the kitchen sink at the Cavs for that top pick, which means that it seems like they're really going to have a lot of options. Also, don't forget that the Cavaliers also a first round pick coming from the Heat in 2015 (I believe?). So if LeBron leaves and comes here, obviously his presence is the real prize, but the Cavaliers also benefit from a weakened Heat franchise that overnight becomes, IMO, a borderline lottery team.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
Based on the location of this house and my knowledge of the area, my guess is that these were not JCU students, despite the age of those involved.

NBA: General News & Discussion
So this means that there's almost certainly no one year period in Miami where he "assesses the landscape of the rest of the league" (and where the Cavs would have another chance to prove their worthiness to him). If he doesn't come back to Cleveland this summer, the earliest he would likely return would be after he has left his prime as a player, well into his early/mid 30s. Personally, I have no interest in watching an aged LeBron return to Cleveland for some sort of a contrived comeback to finish his career here when it's clear he won't be able to lead the Cavs to a title (like he still potentially could now).

What Would You Re-Name the Cleveland Indians?
It's my understanding that Chief Wahoo is the bigger problem and quite frankly I have no issue with replacing him. If we had to change the name...I'm really at a loss to what a good alternative might be.

It would be lovely if someone did something with the old KFC lot.

This may be cheating since he's not actually from Ohio, but how about some love for Kent State's Joe Walsh:

MLB: General News & Discussion
Since I think we're on the same page, I'll throw this out there as well: Interleague Play creates oftentimes significant strength of schedule differences between teams that are fighting for the same playoff spots, and I think that's a big problem as well. Since tradition seems to mean little to those currently running MLB, I'd almost rather see them scrap the current league set up and move more towards geography. How cool would it be to see the Indians, Reds, Pirates, and Tigers in a division?

Cleveland: Retail News
Awesome! I really hope this comes to fruition. It would certainly be huge for Garfield Heights, which has struggled in recent years but is still hanging on. I'd also like to see this be the catalyst for the long-talked-about Transportation Boulevard extension to Rockside.

Is anyone else becoming a bit worn out by these Yankees players farewell tours? I sure hope Cleveland isn't planning anything special for Jeter.

How much Sugar is in a can of Coke?
I've been trying to cut as much processed sugar from my diet as possible recently. Pop, candy, cookies, etc. are obvious culprits, but as the above ketchup video points out, sugar is added into all kinds of different foods, many of which we'd never expect. There are a lot of health issues that we know of (and many others that haven't been proven yet) that are either directly caused or exacerbated by the consumption of excessive amounts of processed sugar.

Oh you know what, now that I think about it, I do recall seeing the "KW" sign, but I think I thought they were just trying to lease the space.

Cleveland Heights: Development and News
Since this thread is alive and kicking, I wanted to point out that although BW3 has moved into the new Myxx space, it appears that there is still a sliver of a vacancy just to the west in that building. Any ideas on what might go there or what might be a good fit?

Higher Education
In regards to "efficiency," on a hunch, I do believe this could have more to do with classroom environment and peer effects. As for private schools--as a group--all doing things one way and public schools all doing it a different way, I think you're painting with too wide of a brush. In fact, I think that variations in instructional methods vary more by teacher than even by school (let alone school type).

Higher Education
I can't speak to the lower levels of Common Core math, but I can assure you that by the time the kids are in 7th and 8th grade, they're expected to master skills that used to be part of the high school curriculum. The problem with this is that all human beings develop at different rates and all students have different potentials. In other words, I strongly believe that we need to go to flexible and meritocratic tracking of students. In regards to private schools, I'm not at all convinced that, in general, they do a better job of "delivering" content. One thing that is certainly different is the fact the schools have more flexibility in controlling the learning environment, including not having to comply with many government regulations, getting rid of trouble-makers, and having more freedom in placing students where they actually belong. There are a lot of things that public schools could do to emulate private schools, but very little of it truly has to do with pedagogy. However if the public schools were given the freedom to behave more like private schools, many students would be "left behind," however probably not many more or less than we'd expect to see given the true variations of student abilities and motivation.

Higher Education
I'm well-aware of what the possibilities for transferring education content to students though technology might be. However the human aspect is always going to be important is going to be very difficult to replicate. In regards to education costs, I believe that it's more than sustainable as a percentage of GDP, especially when other Western countries are in the same ballpark. But if we're really interested in cutting costs, the first and most important step would be to eliminate many of the unfunded mandates coming down from the state and Federal governments. (Incidentally, many of these mandates and regulations are completely unsupported by research and would not hurt educational outcomes one bit.)

Cleveland Heights: Development and News
In other news, I drove by Heights High the other day and it seems like work is beginning on the football stadium renovations. If I remember correctly, they will be finished in time for the first home game of the year.

Higher Education
We've discussed this before and there are a lot of reasons why I think you're probably overestimating what's going to be possible, and you seem to assume that these jobs are only about transferring educational content to students. Based on what I've experienced, I highly doubt that many parents (or even community members without children) are going to be excited about the idea of having un- or semi-supervised adolescent students "working at their own pace" learning through technology away from schools. There may be ways for technology to cut certain personnel costs in education, but there is still going to be a need for an adequate supply of teachers, and it will also probably be a long time before the public is interested in turning away from teaching as a profession. There are also actual content-based reasons why I doubt technology can completely replace humans in this realm as well. Per the link below, it seems that there are actually a great many other career paths and sectors that are more likely to be "disrupted" by technology: http://www.oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk/downloads/academic/The_Future_of_Employment.pdf

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
Funny thing is that I was just telling my friend that I thought that the westside needed its own version of John Hay. This is a great development for CMSD and the city.

East Cleveland: Development and News
I stand corrected. I thought that at least part of the old core was retained, but truthfully whenever I've driven by I haven't gotten a great look at it. Sad because the old building was also magnificent.
