Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
Someone help me out here. Couldn't an airline using a hub-and-spoke network literally have a hub anywhere and it wouldn't matter much whether or not the locals used the airline? A hub is simply where passengers make flight connections, with most of these passengers being from other cities. So the "profitability" of that hub is reliant on other factors mostly beyond a locality's control. Factors (such as MD88 said above) like whether or not the airline actually wants to have a hub in said city. An example might be FedEx and their operations "hub" in Memphis. Of course Memphis is centrally-located which is a plus, but 99% (I'm guessing, but it's the vast majority) of the packages that FedEx routs through Memphis are from elsewhere in the United States. There is a slightly different dynamic for airlines of course, but the same idea seems to apply if we're talking about a hub-and-spoke network, right? I can't remember where I heard or read this, but someone mentioned yesterday that United may be using this as a ploy to get a sweetheart deal from Cleveland officials regarding taxes, airport renovations, etc.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
IMO, a city like Cleveland trying to draw inspiration from Toronto is about as much of a stretch as the former trying to draw inspiration from Chicago, New York, or any other large, cosmopolitan city. It's just too fundamentally different to be a realistic model. Although I suppose it wouldn't be so bad for Cleveland to one day become the primate city of Canada.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
Well, crap, this stinks. I never flew United (and maybe flew Continental once that I can remember) so I guess people like me are to blame, but this news still infuriates me. Reading some of the comments on their Facebook page, it makes me feel a little bit better knowing that they're truly despised for their terrible service.

Governor John Kasich
This is why I have a huge problem anytime someone calls Kasich a "moderate." He is constantly rolling over for the ultraconservative legislature in this state, even if he pretends to have a different view on an issue. It's also why a second-term Kasich with nothing to lose should worry any Ohioan that doesn't want more extremist conservative legislation becoming law.

I actually think the GAWC is pretty legit, but to each his own I guess.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I don't understand how this team's defense is so bad considering that's supposed to be Brown's calling card. Oh well, I'm going to go ahead and add one to the loss column for tonight's game. They're not going to beat Portland. Also, the Cavaliers are chasing the 6th seed, not the 8th seed, as far as I'm concerned.

Cleveland Heights: Development and News
Looks like Mosdos won't be moving in. From other articles I've read, it appears that they received a higher than expected estimate to renovate the school, so they tried to get CH-UH to renegotiate the original lease agreement. I guess that went nowhere and the district made other plans (as discussed in the following article). Instead, the Heights Youth Theatre, formerly located at Wiley, will be moving in: http://www.localjewishnews.com/2014/01/12/millikin-building-may-house-heights-youth-theatre-community-playground-may-also-be-built-on-millikin-property/

Looks like Berea, Shaker Heights, and Aurora also make prominent appearances in Draft Day.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
I'm not sure how the Browns managed to scare away McDaniels, but if they don't get Whisenhunt and instead end up with another coordinator with no head coaching experience, it's going to be a major disappointment.

Cleveland Heights: Development and News
I don't think any official decision has been made about the CH portion of Oakwood. What is known, however, as Vince pointed out above, is that zoning would need to be changed for First Interstate to execute their plans and thats unlikely considering the backlash they would be likely to face. That's especially true now considering people have seen how FI pulled the wool over the eyes of South Euclid as these developers made back room deals to poach Walmart from CH.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Except that the problems with this defense existed all season when the players that were sick/injured/suspended were actually on the field at their best. I mean they were giving up lots of points to even mediocre offenses. FWIW, I'm pretty sure that Luke Fickell interviewed for the head coaching job at Florida Atlantic earlier in the year. Not sure if that's still a possibility for him, but if it were to happen I think that would be the best way to part ways and bring in a fresh perspective to the defense while still allowing Fickell to land on his feet.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
Albuquerque is pretty boring from what I saw of it...and there's this weird haze floating over the city that is very visible as you approach it by car. Santa Fe, on the other hand, seems pretty cool from what I've heard, but I haven't had a chance to get there yet.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Well, that stunk, but I'm very optimistic about the future. Ohio State landed two more top recruits today (both defensive backs! and both from Glenville) and Miller is rumored to be returning. Next year will be the first time that Meyer has some upperclassmen on the roster that he actually recruited. This program may not have climbed to the top of the pile this season, but they're in great shape to compete for a national title in the coming years.

2014 Gubernatorial Election
What's the word on Charles Earl's campaign? That's what could make this election very interesting, more so than any of these primary races in my opinion.

Cleveland Heights: Development and News
a) Yes Wiley closes at the end of the year and the students will be split between Roxboro and Monticello. That I know to be a 100% certainty. I'm not sure if they've redrawn the boundaries, but I think they were supposed to talk about it earlier this month. b) I'm not sure if all HS students will be at Wiley while Heights is being re-done because the stories I've read are unclear, but I assume that to be the case because I'm not sure where else they would go. c) After Heights is finished, then all of the middle school students will be housed at Wiley while Roxboro and Monticello are renovated.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
If they hire Jim Schwartz...uh...I'm not even going to finish this statement because the possibility is so troubling.

Cleveland Heights: Development and News
Interesting. Maybe you took one at US and it transferred? I don't think Heights students had to take PE courses every year, but I know that at least one was required. Though that athlete exemption also sounds vaguely familiar, I know for certain that my buddies on the hockey and soccer teams both had to take PE. I remember it actually very well because they would come to Geometry class with wet hair reeking of chlorine telling me how terrible it was, as I would later find out. This is Wiley's final year as a zoned middle school. It will close and then itself be renovated to accommodate all high school students in the district. Then later on it will accommodate all middle school students in the district. It's being use as "swing space" while the other two middle schools and high school are being renovated. I think that's the correct timeline, with the high school being done first followed by the two middle schools. Yeah, he was the iconic wrestling coach at Heights for over two decades. He also taught PE I believe and ran the sports summer camp. And I thought everyone knew about him, too. Now I'm beginning to think you may need to turn in your "Hts" card and maybe just change your name to the less distinguishable "44121."

Cleveland Browns Discussion
This franchise is a disaster right now...and some of the possible candidates being thrown around to take over make me really wonder what these people are thinking. I feel bad for Chud even if I'm not at all convinced that he was going to ever turn it around. He really had the rug swept right out from underneath him and this was his "dream job," no less. And he'll probably never get another shot at a head coaching gig in the league again.

Cleveland Heights: Development and News
I believe ALL middle school students in the district will attend Wiley for a period of a year or two. I'm guessing that they're going to try to shoehorn as many high school students as possible into the facility when Heights is being renovated. Yes, the SE pool has always been used by the swim team in "modern" times as far as I know. It's much bigger than the NW pool is (was?) and was better for audiences. I'm kind of surprised that you don't remember the SE pool...when I attended Heights during the late 1990s, all freshmen participated in a four or six week swimming module as part of the required first year physical education class (or possibly health, but most likely PE). I remember also using the SE pool frequently while attending Heights Sports Camp run by Coach Hoon.

Cleveland Heights: Development and News
Something is being done with the pool--it's either being extensively renovated or completely demolished and rebuilt. If the latter is what ends up happening, I'm not sure it would necessarily be rebuilt in the same spot that it is now. I don't know about the gym, I just know that several million will be going towards the pool because that was something that the anti-renovation group latched on to as a reason to vote down the buildings levy.

And not only that, but the fact that BG knocked NIU out of a BCS game cost the MAC a lot of money.

I don't think those renderings are official at all. The only thing that has basically been promised is that the science wing will be removed.

Shaker Heights: Van Aken District Transit Oriented Development
The point is that that area needs something sooner rather than later. The longer they wait and the more demographics change in that area the more difficult it may be to attract the types of businesses that they probably want to make some of those renderings a reality.
-
Shaker Heights: Van Aken District Transit Oriented Development
I don't know what time frame, but they better not be thinking too long-term because I'm not sure doing so makes sense considering demographic trends in that area. Also, that is a very heavily-traveled intersection and I doubt that's going to change much no matter what they do to it, but those sketches seem to be ignoring that reality to some degree as well. I really do hope that that the area itself becomes a destination built around transit-oriented development but my gut tells me that this will still primarily be a pass-though, mostly for folks trying to get to one freeway or another. Also wasn't there talk of moving one of the SH libraries over there? That would be a nice start.
