  1. Oh, yes, the false argument based on a situation (the recent election) where a minority of Americans bend the rules to consolidate power for themselves, in turn somehow supposed to be an indication that there is widespread backlash against common decency.
  2. This is another wrong side of history situation for those insisting on keeping it. I'm fairly confident that it will be gone within my lifetime, but more likely than that much sooner.

Back when my pops was alive and he and I used to watch the Tribe together several days a week, Marte was a frequent topic of discussion. I was often having to defend Marte, optimistically believing that his "top prospect" status was deserving and he was going to turn the corner at any moment and become the Tribe's everyday third baseman. Sadly that never happened and his career essentially fizzled out as the aughts came to an end. In regards to Ventura, I never much cared for him as a very good pitcher of a division rival, but he was an amazing talent that had not yet reached its full pinnacle. Just how good could he have been? Ventura, along with Marte, has departed far too soon, with so much more living yet to do. And as many have pointed out, the connection between the two is eerie: Ventura was the starting pitcher in the final MLB game that Marte played in. An incredibly sad day for baseball.
  4. Hopefully not a name change, but at least maybe incentive for dropping the Wahoo logo.
  5. I was going to mention this earlier. I wonder if these outdoor "malls" are less-susceptible to this type of behavior because of the nature of the design? Seems particularly likely in the winter.
  6. The Browns will also have Philly's 10th pick of the first round. If they go with someone else at #1, any chance at all Trubiski is still there at #10?
  7. Well, that was a disaster. I didn't think the Buckeye really had a shot at the title this year, but I never would have expected such an ugly showing in the playoff. If this team was a year ahead of schedule, hopefully last night will be the catalyst to make a few moves that will put them over the top next year. Obviously they need to find a better offensive coordinator, in fact they should shell out big bucks to get one. But I also think they need to take a hard look at the quarterback position. Somehow J.T. Barrett hasn't really improved since his freshman year.

I'm still working my way through latest season of The Man in the High Castle. Sherlock returns on Sunday. I've been waiting for that for some time.
  9. That's fine, but then urban communities need to start "playing the game," then, including doing what I suggested above as well as coming up with more creative measures to strike back at residents in sprawl communities who are shirking the burden.
  10. When you say "demand," I really read that as "price." And in economics, price is based on the interplay of both demand and supply. So I would also add that in some of these neighborhoods, selectively reducing housing supply can help improve prices in numerous ways. Think of it as the old cliche of "addition by subtraction." Here's an example: Just north of the Coventry shopping center is what some refer to as the Superior Triangle. Most of that area is a mess. I have long felt that it be torn down entirely, which I think would result in significant benefits. I would also advocate that other parts of the Heights area and other inner-ring suburbs also eliminate chunks of their housing in troubled areas, including the previously-referenced South Euclid neighborhoods that are heavy with Section 8. Some of this has already started to happen, but local officials need a more widespread and planned program. Obviously I would hope that historic housing would be spared if at all possible. I know that this may not be a popular view, but my thinking is that many of these suburbs have taken on far too much of the burden for low-income housing and it's causing them to reach a tipping point. If there is a correlation between poverty and crime, then it should come as no surprise that as poverty has become concentrated in certain parts of the suburbs that crime has also crept in as well. If state and Federal programs are not going to help spread the burden around, then local governments need to figure out what they can do to combat the problem themselves.
  11. Interesting if true. Vikings basketball would have to relocate to the Q, which already has a packed schedule but could probably accommodate.
  12. Somehow the 49ers also won, keeping the Browns in prime position to snag the #1 pick.
  13. Cancel the parade!
  14. He's a bona fide slugger who's been an All-Star three of the last four seasons. I think we can expect some drop-off in his production over the next few years, but I don't think it will be significant based on trends. The outfield could be upgraded a bit if/when Brantley comes back or if one of the young prospects (Diaz or Zimmer) can come up and produce.
  15. I think so. And if that's the case, I see this is a significant upgrade. On paper the offense looks like it should be able to pull more of its own weight to match up with the stellar rotation. The Indians could be really, really good next year!
  16. Seriously ridiculous. That's the proverbial cherry on top of how terrible this season has been. At this point I wouldn't mind if the Browns left again and Cuyahoga County taxpayers got a refund.

    State of Erie, anyone? ;)
  18. This may sound like a dumb question, but as a "school of choice," what is its niche? What does it offer that students supposedly cannot get at their neighborhood public high school?
  19. And part of the shopping center has come down as well. Does anyone know what Pearl of the Orient will be doing?
  20. Ohio State has to be a lock for the CFP at this point, regardless of how any of the title games play out. I think 'Bama is also a lock even if they lose the SEC title game. The only way the Big Ten "Champion" is guaranteed the last spot in the CFP, in my opinion, is if the Clemson and/or Washington loses. I hope they both lose, though, which call me crazy, could open the door up to having THREE Big Ten teams make the playoff. The committee would be facing 2-loss team madness, but ultimately it would come down to a choice between Colorado or Michigan. At that point, just let Kordell Steward throw a Hail Mary to decide who gets in.
  21. 2. The offense has looked terrible in the past few games. However Meyer is one of those coaches that always does a great job getting his team prepared for postseason games with a month to prepare. I think they'll be ready for the semifinal game, and as I mentioned above, this team was built for warm weather so they'll probably play better based on that alone. I don't think they're winning the title, though. In fact, I don't think anyone is going to beat Alabama. 3. I agree and I was rooting for Penn State yesterday because I don't think the Buckeyes have much to gain (other than a trophy and some money) by playing in the Big Ten title game.
  22. I have to believe that 'Bama will remain in the top spot, regardless of what happens in the SEC title game next weekend, and they'll end up going to Atlanta to play in the Peach Bowl CFP semifinal game. Best case scenario for OSU then is that they are given the 2nd or 3rd seed and are sent out to Buckeye-friendly Glendale for the Fiesta Bowl CFP semifinal game. As someone on Twitter mentioned, the offense has sputtered in the past few weeks in cold weather, but this team is built for warm weather, which will bode will for the playoffs.
  23. I'd like to see them go with former Akron coach Caleb Porter, but it seems like it might not quite yet be his time.
  24. How is he making the same point every few days? This thread went over a month without a comment until a few days back KJP posted a list of properties from the planning website that would be demolished. Many are just assuming that these are worthless properties and that the people living in them (though few in number) get satisfaction from a bag of cash and orders to uproot and find someplace new to live.
  25. It was a strange call. As for next week, the only thing that makes me like the Bucks' chances is the fact that scUM has so much uncertainty at QB. Hopefully the D-Line gets after him a bit and forces some bad decisions. I'd also like to see some decent weather for Braxton to hopefully get the passing game going again.
