Cleveland Browns Discussion
Different sport, but would you consider Francona to be trash? Oftentimes in sports, coaches are only as good as their players.

What's Andy's contract like? Will the Cavaliers have a chance to unload him over the summer? I don't think they can risk playing the waiting game each season anymore.

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
Who's demanding "walkable urbanism"? Where's the objective evidence for that demand? Does this number deduct the gasoline taxes commuters pay? For that matter, does it include government spending on "Section 8" subsidies, which definitely induce people to move outward. It sounds like that $450B has to do with housing subsidies that are coming from other, more general budget sources. Gasoline taxes go to fund roads/freeways and I'm not sure you can assume that there is anything left over to subsidize sprawl like that. Good question on Section 8. It's definitely a program that needs to be allowed to die.

I thought it meant "Public Official."

No. I hate to say it, but...yes. Fitzgerald fits the profile of a candidate that gets landslid (is that even a word?).

I think Strickland would have had a great shot against Kasich.

2014 Gubernatorial Election
I've warmed a bit to Fitzgerald since he's taken office as County Executive, but I'm still not a huge fan and I think that because he's from this area that might be held against him downstate. One way or another the Democrats need to avoid a primary if at all possible.

Rich Cordray or Tim Ryan?

Fair or unfair (and probably due to the timing of his hospitalization), Arians' age and health kind of concerns me. I really wanted Bill O'Brien, but at this point I guess I would be okay with Whisenthunt.

Rich Blocks, Poor Blocks
True. I've seen things like "Bluestone," "Fairmount," and "Ambler Heights" listed in the Heights area on certain online mapping websites and thought that was kind of cool. Though I've never seen any of the names for SH neighborhoods that are listed on the above website.

Boy did they mess up those neighborhood names. Laureldale? WTH?! I've in Shaker/Shaker Sq. for 45 years and have never heard that name. That's the Mercer neighborhood!! Malvern stretches from Warrensville South to Lee. Boulevard is from Lee South, to 127 St, North of Shaker Blvd. SMDH! My guess is that they simply used some made up names to describe those respective "neighborhoods," particularly since (as my theory goes) they are based on Census tracts and not on the specifically-defined neighborhoods that Shaker Heights locals have come to know (and officially recognized by the City of Shaker Heights).

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Basketball Discussion
The Big Ten is absolutely loaded this year. Illinois lost last night, though. I'm really impressed with and excited about Sam Thompson. His outside shot/selection still needs some work, but his transition play and interior defense is fun to watch. I want to see more development from some of the other youngsters. Craft and Thomas can't be expected to carry this team if they're going to make it past the Sweet Sixteen.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
I have to point this out: The comment that you made (in bold) is eerily similar to what I heard people say when they gave Hafner a big contract a few years back. But I will say this, I don't get the impression that motivation will be an issue for Swisher. He's the type of guy that plays the game the right way and always seem to give his best effort. My concern with him is that as he continues to age, and particularly as he gets towards the back end of that deal, his skills are going to naturally diminish to the extent that the contract becomes an anchor that to some degree will hold the franchise back. I think there's some value in the deal in the front end of the contract, but then again, is this team even going to be competing in the next year or two? In the fickle AL Central, I suppose it's possible, but it's not like the Tigers are getting any worse.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Although you're right in that the parody in the NFL allows franchises' fortunes to change very quickly, your above example of Whisenhunt and Arizona (and really there are many similar stories) is not really what we want to see here. We want the Browns to get a coach and put together a core group of players that are going to allow this franchise to put together a sustained period of success of (hopefully) 5-7 years. The recent "turnarounds" in Tampa, Oakland, Miami, Arizona, etc., etc. is not what we want here.

Here we go: http://higley1000.com/about-this-site/methodology/neighborhoods-by-metro The above must be older data (from the 2000 census, perhaps?).

Cleveland Browns Discussion
His passion for the game isn't in doubt, as he works the NFL pregame for CBS. His passion for coaching declined, or at least his energy level did while his wife fought cancer. She died in 2010 and I'm sure a big piece of Bill died along with her. Perhaps Bill is ready to consider coaching again. Only he knows. Wait, Cowher's wife passed away a few years ago? For some reason I don't remember hearing about that. She was from Cleveland, right?

You live near Shaker Square and your parents live what, in the tract that straddles Shaker Boulevard east of Lee and west of Warrensville Center, and includes almost all of South Park Boulevard? Why is it a shock that there would be such a difference in incomes? Particularly since your block includes some high-density neighborhoods south of Shaker Square, including part of Buckeye, which as far as I can tell is fairly impoverished. Or are you just taking issue with the way the boundaries are drawn? In fairness, there can be a big difference between income and wealth and I'm not sure that maps like these account for that. For what it's worth, I remember seeing a website a few years ago that listed the 1000 richest neighborhoods in the United States and two of them were in Shaker Heights (along with a few in the further out suburbs such as Pepper Pike, Gates Mills, and Hunting Valley). A lot of it simply has to do with how the boundaries of these census tracts or "neighborhoods" are drawn. No matter how you slice it, though, there is a indeed a big disparity in income or wealth between different neighborhoods in Shaker Heights. Probably as much as you'll find in any one city with any amount of density in Northeast Ohio or perhaps even the entire Midwest.

You have to overpay in Cleveland In any sport that's just how the sports world works I don't think that would necessarily be true if any of the franchises were able to establish a winning culture/tradition. Although at this point, you're probably right. Though my concern lies with the fact that when this tightwad ownership overpays for a player it really handcuffs the organization, particularly when there may have been other, cheaper ways of getting a similar level of production from RF.

I'm leery of Kelly, but even if the Browns brought him, what quarterback might possibly be available to run that system? Or is he already on their roster?

He's coming up on 80 years old, and plus his expertise is really more in the stock market and entrepreneurship. Personally I wouldn't mind Josh McDaniel or Bill O'Brien. :whip:

Seems to me as though whichever lazy employee of Forbes wrote that summary somehow confused Cleveland, Ohio with Cleveland, Tennessee.
