Cleveland Guardians Discussion
Definitely overpaid for Swisher, but I'm okay with the signing because his production has been consistently solid in recent years.

That's what I'm thinking, too. Scary to this about this being a possibility.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Hmmm, surprised no one has posted about this: http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/12/rta_bus_driver_dead_after_cras.html This happened in my neck of the woods.

Cleveland: 2013 Mayoral Race
Let me preface by saying that I don't live in Cleveland and thus cannot vote. That said, I think Jackson needs to go. His schools plan helped get a levy passed, but in the long-term the Transformation Plan is not going to work because it ignores reality and places emphasis on things that will backfire. Other than that, his leadership has been mediocre, at best. I do think he will win, though, no matter who he runs against. The city appears to be rebounding (which I think has little to do with anything he's done) and that's all that will matter to the voters that remain within city limits.

And saves are overrated, too. Perez's stock will never be higher. Makes sense to pawn him off now and get something decent.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
I'm not bothered by trading Choo (and I wouldn't mind if they unloaded Perez at this point, too). Neither of these guys were going to be on the team come 2015 when they win the World Series. I'm also okay with the Mark Reynolds signing, because his OPS is solid, despite the strikeouts. What I don't like is the pickup of Stubbs, even if he was only a "throw-in." He is absolutely terrible and I'm not optimistic about him ever improving at his age. My Cincinnati friends constantly complained about him and most are happy to see him gone. I'd rather the Tribe put Carrera or some other young prospect in CF.

How does it compare to other recent convention host cities?

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
Just my personal opinion, but I've found the Heights Observer to be pretty legit and informative, even for a paper that apparently lets anyone write for it.

Lyndhurst: Acacia Country Club
Great news, particularly for the residents of that immediate area! Just kind of makes me more bummed about the Oakwood situation and what might have been.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I understand the law and what you're saying is definitely true, but the cops are given enough flexibility that in their jobs they do have the opportunity to fabricate probable cause if they so desire (and some take advantage of this freedom). My only point is that if their probable cause was based on a fired shot, and yet no gun or bullet casings have been found, then I don't think that public demand for scrutiny or an independent investigation is unwarranted. I honestly don't know what happened, and there may be a perfectly legitimate explanation for the inconsistencies, however as of now it appears to me that something isn't adding up.

A Story Without Words
I first read about this story a while back on The Chive (a tad embarrassed to admit that, but whatever). I'm fairly certain that they were the first to write about it, but either way the soldier and his fiance had always dreamed of getting a cabin of their own and Chive readers made enough in donations to either purchase it outright or put down a significant down payment. The last picture is related to the cabin part of the story.

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
I don't count the Beacon Journal (or the News Herald for that matter) because they don't target "Cleveland". They're in the market, but they target the outskirts of it, and papers that do that usually don't count as another "major" paper Yeah I'm sure there's a more specific definition that could be used for "major newspaper," but I generally consider the News Herald to be in the same class as the Sun Newspapers because they deal with suburban areas. Then again I would actually count the Beacon-Journal as sort of being in the same class as the Plain Dealer because it's the main newspaper for a large, urban area based around a big(-ish) city. I could see how you could consider the Beacon Journal as in the same class as the PD. I still consider them not counting in terms of the other "major" paper because the city they focus on is Akron. They don't really serve Cleveland. They're in the "number 2" by default, not by design Oh yeah, for sure, the only part of Northeast Ohio that might be able to say that they have two "major" newspapers would be Macedonia, Twinsburg, and Hudson. ;)

US Economy: News & Discussion
I've seen numbers (and maybe these are guesses at what the final total will be) that have the costs of military adventurism in the Middle East in the past decade sitting closer to $3 or $4 trillion.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I don't think anyone here is questioning how the chase ended. The police reacted in a manner that was seemingly appropriate. I think that most people are concerned about how/why the chase started and continued.

MAC: General Conference News & Discussion
It's a bummer that Kent State could have been that team in the BCS bowl game if the ball had bounced a little differently in the MAC title game. Hopefully Hazell sticks around and can turn the Flashes into a perennial MAC contender that can occasionally make a play at busting the BCS. Although if I were to guess, I suspect he's getting a lot of phone calls and may be given an offer he can't refuse. Anyways, how cool would it have been for Kent to get into a BCS game? That would mean that in about the span of a decade, they would have been to an Elite Eight, a College World Series, and a BCS game. Would any other non-BCS school be able to lay claim to such a breadth of success in the major sports?

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
I always thought the Dolans would hold on to STO for as long as they could, even if they sold the franchise. I'm not going to try to read too much into this, but I'm wondering if this either means that the sale of the franchise is right around the corner, too...or if they're going to hold on to the Tribe into perpetuity, shattering the dreams of hundreds of thousands of local fans hoping they'd be selling soon. ;)

Cleveland Browns Discussion
The Raidas are the picture-perfect definition of "lowly," but I'm still very satisfied with yesterday's win. It's not easy on the road in the NFL, and that team showed a lot of perseverance. I wish they would have put their foot on Oakland's throat late in the second quarter, but I think they'll get there at some point. Either way, this team is still making great progress and they should be able to build on their streak with KC coming to town next Sunday.

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
Not sure if this has been posted here before (probably on another thread), but I just saw a very piece from PBS from a while back about Cleveland. Anyways, it's up for free online and it has some really good stuff that I think relates very closely to the regionalism discussion and general urban policy: http://www.lincolninst.edu/pubs/video/169d849520894f0a926a60d646448071/Making-Sense-of-Place---Cleveland

I believe that the PD makes money as is, printing seven days a week. I don't know the full story, so I won't give my opinion. However the guild seems to believe that this move is being made to break them.
