Cleveland Guardians Discussion
I tend to agree with this, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't at least a little bit excited about this move.

Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel ran for US Senate.
I'm not voting against Mandel because of his views on abortion. I'm voting against him because he's an inexperienced opportunist with whom I disagree on a wide range of issues. Sorry.

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
Classes, meetings, etc., yeah I've spent a lot of time in that building. It's not terrible, I'm just not a big fan of many of the odd shapes that occur within the building (including the way they affect some of the rooms) that accommodate the exterior. I think CSU needs to try to be a little more traditional in how it has their buildings designed, but that's just me.

Someone was trying too hard when they designed the education building. It's functionality is questionable, IMO. I'd rather see someone come in with an idea for a building with more of a traditional look...something that will stand the test of time.

Lyndhurst: Acacia Country Club
That's a good point, too, about taxpayers subsidizing the sport. In regards to Manakiki (and even the northern part of the North Chagrin Reservation), even if the MetroParks got good deals on that land, it still costs money to maintain and, IMO, it's of little benefit to most Cuyahoga County residents because of the location. It's just frustrating to hear of potential financial issues for the MetroParks yet know that it's holding land in an area where residents pay no taxes to support it.

Like Alomar. He'd be cheap and an easy sell to fans. Ultimately though, the elephant in the room here is that the manager in baseball has less effect on the outcome of games than the coach of just about any other major professional sport. Switching managers at this point is a red herring. Not even Francona will turn this franchise around without the ownership putting more skin in the game.

Lyndhurst: Acacia Country Club
If the MetroParks is having financial issues, I have to wonder why they're running a park/golf course in Lake County where, as far as I can tell, residents don't pay a dime to support the organization. That doesn't make much sense to me, especially considering an arrangement exists with Hinckley Township in Medina County where residents there have a park, but also pay the same tax rate to the MetroParks as Cuyahoga County residents. I honestly don't care if Acacia remains a golf course or if it becomes a full-fledged park. I'm just encouraged by the idea that the MetroParks might be coming in and permanently preventing any developer from turning that land into more retail.

I agree that Acta did not get a fair shot at all. However I'm a huge Sandy Alomar fan and I'm glad he's going to get a shot to manage. I remember watching the Tribe play at old Muni in the early 1990s and he was one of the few players that consistently came out after games to sign autographs. He has always been a class act and it's great that his first chance to take over the skipper role will be in the place where his career began.

Cleveland Heights: Development and News
Agreed...the further along we go here, the more evident it becomes that the development of Oakwood was unnecessary and is adding very little value to the community. How can a developer make claims of all the jobs that will be created when all they're doing is poaching job from other nearby retail centers? In regards to Severance, the more the vacancies pile up, the more it seems like the property needs to be completely re-purposed. I don't have any specific ideas, but perhaps something other than retail should be explored.

South Euclid: Cedar Center
The original Corky and Lenny's left long before there were ever plans to tear down and rebuild Cedar Center north. In fact that location became a Fuddrucker's for a few years in the 1990s and then it turned into something else, I think some sort of an Orthodox restaurant, which I never visited. I have a lot of warm childhood memories of times spent at Cedar Center north, but time moves on and change probably was needed. However what replaced it is a complete abomination. The disappointment of what has become the new Cedar Cedar north is in large part reflective of the terrible leadership running South Euclid these days. They've made some really bad decisions and taken on huge debts and a lot of what we're seeing now is what what happens when a local government becomes desperate to remain relevant. And in the process they've done things that affect and hurt residents in that entire area, not just those that live in S.E.

I like that design. If Cleveland State is going to assert a presence south of Prospect (which it obviously already has), then I agree with the idea of orienting the CIHP building in that direction. Right now Prospect near CSU sort of feels like a glorified alleyway (with speeding motorists, of course). And of course the idea of a parking garage makes perfect sense. The South Garage is already getting pretty full certain days/times due to limited parking elsewhere on campus and the new parking fee scheme (I also think that there are some residents of Heritage Hall parking there overnight now, but I'm not 100% certain--however this appears to be a new issue that needs to be monitored).

Cleveland: Downtown: Huntington Bank Field
Interesting, I didn't hear this. Another possibility that hasn't been mentioned is the Big Ten Championship for football.

Cleveland: Downtown: Huntington Bank Field
Baskin and Phelps have a great show. And they've been trumpeting this issue for some time now (though as recently as last week they were discussing because this became news again).

Cleveland: Downtown: Huntington Bank Field
It does have to be retractable, IMO, which is what I forgot to mention. The city also needs more hotel space so we can land big-time events like political conventions, the Final Four, and, dare I say it...the Super Bowl.

Cleveland: Downtown: Huntington Bank Field
I know this topic is really old, but with the new ownership taking over the Browns, it seems that talks of putting a dome on the stadium have been revived a bit. Today Haslem met with city officials and one of the issues brought up was the idea of putting a roof on the stadium. Also apparently three architect firms will be brought in to discuss the feasibility. Has anyone's opinion changed on this? I vaguely recall being opposed to the idea when I first heard about it a few years ago, but now that I'm thinking about it again I think I'd like to see this happen.

Not sure about Cincinnati, but Columbus makes a lot of sense as the home of The Limited and Abercrombie & Fitch.

Ohio Congressional Redistricting / Gerrymandering
I saw what I think was the first ad against this proposal on television yesterday. I'm on the fence about this specific proposal (I have to read more about it), but the fact remains that Ohio's system for drawing districts is incredibly unfair and way too biased. In a state that is as closely-split as Ohio, there's no reason that more than 60% of the delegation to DC or in the statehouse should be from one party or the other.

Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel ran for US Senate.
Mandel is such a political opportunist it's disgusting. He doesn't deserve to represent Ohio in the Senate.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Anyone see that article in the PD yesterday where George Forbes and Tim Hagan say that they offered Modell a spot at Gateway and he turned it down? I thought the timing of the article was unfortunate, but necessary because of the way some folks in the national media tried to place full blame on Cleveland for the Browns moving.

I was just happy to see Cleveland in the middle quintile.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
UCF is a decent team, so I'm happy with the result. But I'm also concerned with how much Braxton is carrying the ball (and as a result, taking hits).

Cleveland Browns Discussion
It really doesn't make sense. It's my understanding that the NFL is sort of forcing the Browns' hand on this one.

Lyndhurst: Acacia Country Club
First off, Acacia is now off the table and the thought of more retail coming to the Cedar-Richmond is now a distance pipe-dream. Even if Beachwood Place is thinking of expanding, it's going to receive a huge battle regionally and particularly from Beachwood residents (who if you'll recall shot down a hotel at the corner Richmond-Chagrin just last year). Second, I agree with your arguments in principle re: amenities. But as you present it, I'm seeing a larger trend, that being that no region, besides the 5-7 big boys near the coasts, is ever going to have EVERYTHING. So while it may be a noble goal, I'm not going to lose sleep tonight over the fact that we aren't sacrificing quality of life for many residents in the Beachwood/Hillcrest area in pursuit of something that's never going to happen anyways. I'll rest easy with the comfort knowing that Cleveland has a number of amenities (including undoubtedly some retail options) that a number of cities our size and even some bigger do not have.
