Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
I think there's actually only 56 other political subdivisions, but I could be wrong. Joking aside, I only started this thread because the suburban thread was closed at the time. As far as I'm concerned the mods should just 86 it.

New job at CWRU
I think that the Little Italy recommendation is a good one. Someone might be able to give more details, but I'm pretty sure that some of these neighborhoods in University Circle and western Cleveland Heights (Cedar-Fairmount and Coventry) have circulator shuttles I think provided for by the University.

2012 Olympic Games in London
I agree with your point generally, but tennis players have made the Olympics a fairly big deal. I don't think this would be as good for Murray as winning Wimbledon--no British player has won there in 75 years, and you could see the level of expectation/desire he has to win in his speech after he lost--but I think it's a big deal. At least as big as any non-major, and maybe as big to him as winning the Australian or something. Plus, I think a lot of them took this Olympics even more seriously because it was at Wimbledon. Yeah, the non-majors in tennis don't seem to carry as much clout as the non-majors in a sport like golf (which will be added to the Olympic lineu in 2016) so maybe the fact that tennis players had made this a big deal has elevated the Olympic competition to a higher level, though not quite to the level of the majors. Murray doesn't have a single major to his name, so I still think any one, including the Australian, would almost have to take precedence over an Olympic gold. But that's just my guess.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
I'm not a big steak eater and I've never eaten at Red, but from what I've heard the place has a sterling reputation. I do think that location is a bit, um, "interesting" for such a restaurant, but it will add even more life to that strip so that's great news!

He sounded pretty professional in his comments. I like him a lot personally and while I obviously don't think he's an all-pro talent, I also don't think he's gotten a completely fair shake here.

2012 Olympic Games in London
I was happy to see Murray win, but part of me has a hard time taking sports like tennis seriously at the Olympics. What I mean is, deep down, do you think Murray would rather have that gold medal (despite it being held at Wimbledon), or an actual Wimbledon title? Someone I know made a great point about a lot of these professionalized sports at the Olympics being a bit anticlimactic because it's not the most important championship in the sport. As for Bolt, he's amazing. I can't wait to see him in the 200 and the relay. I wish there were more events for him to compete in.

Well at least he would be able to throw out a ceremonial first pitch better than Mallory.

Looks like Gocong might be done for the season with an injury during today's practice.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
I've defended the Dolans and the front office in the past, too, but there is still a lot of blame there. I understand that baseball economics is heavily tilted against medium and small market franchises and that it's not easy for the Dolans in that regard. But there's no reason why their payroll should be in the bottom third of all MLB payrolls. That right there is on the Dolans and it gives the front office almost no room for error. And unfortunately, the front office has made a number of errors, including a really bad recent track record on drafting and missing on a few high-profile free agent signings. If it weren't for them hitting on a few really good trades in the past half-decade or so, this team would be a complete laughingstock. No one can honestly expect the Dolans to spend as much as the Yankees or even the Red Sox or Dodgers, but they do need to spend more on payroll. And Shapiro and Antonetti need to start feeling a little heat under their behinds and start seeing a little more accountability for their decisions. I can't believe it's been five years since that magical 2007 season, it really doesn't seem that long. The years of mediocrity are really starting to fly by.

Yeah they're in full BS mode right now, it gives me a headache whenever I hear one of them talk.

In general these educational companies are far too cozy with state and local governments. The kids are the real losers with situations like these.

That's hilarious. And so true. I love the shot at Perez, too.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
Well it's too late now. I just hope that Pittsburgh wasn't really offering Marte. If so and the Indians passed for whatever reason...I just hope the front office didn't blow it.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
I believe Al Lerner's bid for the Browns was around $500 million. So his son is clearing ~$200 million AND still retaining a stake in the franchise.

Governor John Kasich
If Strickland had distanced himself from Obama, he'd still be governor. I don't know, a lot of it is about timing, too. Strickland benefited from running in 2006 (as opposed to 2002 or 2004 if the election had been that year) and was punished for being a Democrat in 2010.

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
I'm not really a big fan of the new Cleveland.com layout, particularly that bar at the top of the screen that follows you as you scroll down. Particularly annoying for me because I mostly use the "pg up" and "pg dn" buttons on my laptop to move the screen and it blocks a lot of the text.

Favorite Music At The Moment?
Johnny Flynn is pretty solid. I was introduced to him through WJCU. Turns out he grew up in the same area and developed in the same music scene as Mumford and Sons, so it's not shocking that there are some similarities.

He's due for about $7.5-8 million in arbitration next season, which means that if (or actually more likely when) he heads into free agency in 2014, he'll probably command $10+ for at least five years, if not more. You can bet that bidding by the usual suspects (Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Dodgers, Phillies, Rangers) will prevent the Tribe from getting Choo at any kind of a reasonable price. While I do think that the Tribe can be pseudo-competitive again next year, once again they'll likely be several pieces away from actually winning the division and I wouldn't be shocked if they're in the exact same position at the trade deadline. As a result, it's not a bad idea to trade Choo now because as mentioned above he will have a higher value. Further, in theory taking his salary off the books could free up that money for other roster purposes. Also if they can get Marte from Pittsburgh I would say that he's really not that far off from being an everyday player and he could likely replace Choo in the outfield.

I think Randy's true love is football...of the international variety. As for the Tribe...ughhhhh. Yesterday it was rumored that the Tribe may have been in discussions with the Pirates regarding Choo. I think it makes sense to trade Choo before 2014 and I'd be thrilled if they could snag Marte from Pittsburgh. In fact that's a near dream scenario for me. I think they also need to get rid of loud-mouth Perez soon, too. His stock is as high as it will ever be right now. I don't understand these Masterson rumors. I believe that they need to hold on to him.

2012 Olympic Games in London
I only saw about 30-45 minutes, but it did seem a bit ridiculous. One of my buddies joked on Facebook about how it the organizers portrayed the English (themselves, I guess?) as stereotypical chimney-sweeps and and Revolutionary-era soldiers. Duh! I knew that, too. He's struggled a bit, but he's still got 17, just one short of tying the record. MINI-RANT: I think that personal medal counts are kind of overrated, especially when comparing from sport-to-sport. Swimming has so many events and also seven of Phelps' 17 medals have come as part of relays, which definitely seems to inflate his medal count. He's a spectacular athlete and maybe the best swimmer ever, but saying that he's a superior athlete to someone competing in another sport simply because of medal count does not make much sense to me.

Yeah that's exactly why I wish I would have watched that event. I think it's technically the first event of the games and is meant to highlight the host city.

Speaking of the Lerners, it looks like they're going to retain 30% stake in the organization.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Yeah, I'm not ready to skewer Lerner as being a bad owner. He's not a real hands-on owner, but I don't necessarily think that that's prevented this franchise from winning. However (and I know this kind of contradicts that sentiment), I don't think it can hurt to bring in some new blood, some new energy in the owner's box.

Anyone watching? If so, what events are you paying closest attention to? I'm watching bits of everything at the moment, but I'm really waiting in anticipation for Track and Field.

Name your top 5 cities...
American cities only for me... 1. Cleveland - Home...enough said. 2. San Francisco - One of the most unique cities in the world, one of the few incredibly dense cities that I've been to that I can tolerate. 3. Columbus - If not living in Cleveland, I'd probably be living here. 4. St. Louis - Lots of history and culture mixed in with Midwestern charm. 5. Phoenix - Not exact a shining model of well-thought urban planning, but still has some positives and personal connections.
