Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I've heard a rumor that the Cavaliers are working the back channels to see if they can make a trade for the #1 pick (if they don't end up winning the lottery).

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
I wasn't really defending him. As I said, he's been awful. I was just saying that it's not accurate to say he's not giving us a chance to win because somehow (and I'm not really sure how either) he's managed to get more wins than losses. It's a statistical anomaly. Just like the Tribe's actual record compared to its run differential. These are the types of things that over a larger sample size is not going to bode well for Ubaldo individually or the Indians as a team.

Ubaldo has been awful, but somehow he has been giving us a chance to win sometimes, as he has won more games than he has lost, even after yesterday (his record is now 5-4). That can't be said for Masterson, Tomlin, or Gomez. He's got an ERA of 3.60 in the five starts he's won, averaging exactly six innings of work per game. Not terrible, but not exactly great either, and certainly nowhere near what was expected of him. He's so inconsistent and while last year I thought he'd eventually snap out of it, this has gone on long enough that I just don't know anymore. If/when either White or Pomeranz breaks out, management is going to really hear it from fans.

It's so refreshing to find someone else who realizes this! Perez is a good relief pitcher, but he's not as good as one might think by simply looking at his saves and he's definitely overpaid. In regards to his actual comments, he should done a better job of phrasing the part about the fans supporting the first-place Tribe, but he wasn't wrong. However what he said about Carlos Beltran was ridiculous...Beltran took more money to play for a proven contender and the defending World Series champs, period. The fact that their fans are more supportive (and STL is a huge baseball town) is a secondary issue.

Excellent photos! I love the murals of the Cleveland athletes and entertainers. Looks like they did a nice job with that stuff.

I hate to say it, but I'm not sold on this team being a true contender. With a run differential of -5, they seem to be overachieving in a way that isn't sustainable over 162 game schedule. I'm enjoying the ride and hoping I'm wrong, but history and statistics is not on their side unless they turn that number around significantly.

Let me agree with the posters that are saying that some changes need to be made to the alcohol rules. In my younger years I would visit St. Louis once or twice a year and the "eastside" (aka across the river in Illinois) was a popular late-night destination because the bars were open until 4 am. The bars at Cleveland's casino should be open just as late. The demand would be there, and really there's no great reason why bars need to close at 2 am instead of 4 am, but this is Ohio and the rules of our lives tend to be dictated by the backwards edicts of the downstate folks so I'm sure this good idea will never see the light of day.

I'll be honest, besides Anthony Davis, I don't really know who else is highly-rated for this year's draft. For those who do follow the mocks and stuff, who might the Cavs benefit from drafting?

Wow did they do a nice job with that video. I hope this excitement can last a while, it's nice to get this feeling around town!

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
I'm not a huge fan of Melt. It's an okay sandwich, but it's certainly not worth the wait. And although I've never noticed this, from some of my other big eating friends, they apparently rip-off customers on amount of meat they use on their sandwiches. That being said, I do appreciate the fact that people like the food and that the Cleveland Heights location has become a bit of an eastside destination. I think it's unfortunate that the new location is going to cut into some of that CH traffic.

South Euclid: Cedar Center
Yeah I was thinking the same thing when the list of tenants was announced a few months back. I think China Gate was also supposed to return to CC-N, but I haven't seen its name on the signs yet.

The middle one is definitely Little Caesar's (aka the revenue generator for Prince Fielder's contract with the Detroit Tigers).

In regards to the Superior Triangle as you call it, that area is bad, real bad, and I have little hope for it in the near future unless some significant policy changes are made in local and Federal government. On the contrary, while the area I mentioned above isn't in the best of shape, I still have some hope for it because the housing stock and location is decent. It's just got some serious issues facing it and still could get much worse IMO.

Cleveland Heights-South Euclid: Oakwood Commons
That's funny, I was thinking the same thing. And in actuality, Lyndhurst never really was going to be involved, but University Heights was going to be. That land/location would have been perfect for a regional recreation facility and athletic fields. Too bad the timing of events was so far apart. I hope he sees significant challenges in whatever he has planned for the CH portion of the property. That area is zoned large lot residential and all of his plans would need rezoning. What are you hearing? Should we start a new thread to discuss it?

Of course not now. I was simply saying that in the 1970s-80s Cleveland dodged a bullet in not losing the Indians to another city.

Possibly. The area I'm talking about is specifically within the borders of Lee-Mayfield-Taylor-Superior.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
Kids walking around in the streets with their pants around their ankles, loose animals, unkempt homes and lawns, etc. Behavior like that that many normal, middle-class families find undesirable and would rather not have to deal with, not to mention the perception of higher crime rates in that area. I suppose that the intersection itself may be a bit of a magnet, but in reality the low home prices have forced many folks who want to sell to instead rent and made it possible for a chunk of this negative element to be able to take over the residential area. It's basically the beginnings of the same type of urban decay that's reduced entire neighborhoods of Cleveland to mere rubble and now it's gotten its teeth into this part of Cleveland Heights. What streets? What area (listed in my previous post) has this "element" to take over? I do not live in this area but have friends that do. I've never seen unkept homes/lawns. Lose animals, other than skunks, raccoons, woodchucks from the park? Do you live in this area? Low home prices? What the average price of a home in that area over the last decade? I can't see any home being over 135K. When my cousins were looking in that area the homes they were looking at were in the 110-125k price range. Again, I don't see a big change in the demographic over the last two decades for this area. Whitehorn Road, Altamont Avenue, Superior Park Drive...and streets all around that area. It's a mixed bag, because there are still definitely some nice and well-kept homes there. But there is also some deterioration that I can't help but believe will spread. I don't think there's been a drastic shift in demographics over the past 20 years, but I do think there's been a slow and steady change. No I don't live in that specific area, but I do live in the district and that's one of the neighborhoods I worry about most.

That's a pretty central location and near the freeway, too. I can't even imagine where they'd find a better location. Maybe someplace on North Chagrin Reservation land with a new freeway interchange at White Road? ;)

Student group trip to Cleveland - suggestions?
Did we ever hear how the trip went and what everyone thought of Cleveland?

Cleveland Heights-South Euclid: Oakwood Commons
It's terribly wasteful and an example of the fractured government in this region that truly blew an opportunity to do something special with that land. It's a complete disgrace and an eternal stain on the records of all of the South Euclid politicians involved in making this happen. We literally went from possibly having something great on that land (a park or recreation space or whatever) to having the absolute worst possible thing: a Super Walmart. It would be bad if the Walmart were coming from nowhere, but the fact that it's simply moving over from less than a mile away is the icing on the cake.

I'm excited about this casino (not because I gamble, but because of what it means for the city) but now I'm beginning to wonder if this is going to become a big piece of our identity (for better or worse)? Are people going to start thinking "casino" when they hear the word "Cleveland"? Just how big is this going to be?

Cleveland: Downtown: Drury Plaza Hotel Development
Hotels make more sense for this building given its proximity to the MM/CC. Also increased hotel space can help in Cleveland's case for a new push for the Democratic national convention next time. (Might be a long shot but I believe we came close losing to Charlotte) This is exactly what I was thinking. Also can only help us in the future when going after other big events (NCAA Tournament games, etc.).

And the idea of the team moving during that era wasn't that far-fetched, either.

There are a lot of very interesting things going on in that neighborhood. I have to sort of agree with willyboy, though, in that a lot of the architectural gems there have become rough around the edges and there is a definitely a seedy element that tends to be attracted to the area. It's not terrible, but it's slowly deteriorating to the point that I don't think many young, middle-class families would ever look to purchase a home around there.
