  1. Looks like a "Burgers-n-Beer" is moving into the old Coventry McNulty's space in Cleveland Heights. Not going to lie, I'm kind of going to miss McNulty's even though there was nothing particularly special about the place and I haven't been there in a few years...just had some good times there in my early post-college years back here in Cleveland. http://clevelandheights.patch.com/articles/mcnulty-s-moves-out-burgers-n-beer-to-move-in

Former Red Josh Hamilton went ballistic tonight hitting four home runs in one game. One of the rarest feats in baseball.
  3. This sounds like an awesome idea and a win-win for the district which needs cash and the area that could use another nice hotel in an historic building. Hopefully they can make this happen!
  4. I'm not sure I follow what you're saying here.

I believe that CWRU owns that observatory dome. Wonder why they haven't done anything with it? I'd also be curious to find out where that Belmore apartment building is located. Looks like it has some really cool architecture that I'd love to see renovated and resided in again someday.
  6. Right, it's annoying because it had nothing to do with anything Ohio State did or did not do while the young man was visiting. It's something that could have happened anywhere...any probably does. But since this happened at Ohio State, ESPN will try to blow it up into a national scandal.
  7. The fact that so many people simply accept the validity of standardized tests and the growing role they're playing in the public schools is mind-boggling to me. These are one week tests that are so questionable and subjective on so many levels that they cannot possibly be as important as they're made out to be. And yet now it's being proposed that these tests should be used as the basis for a significant portion of a teacher's salary? Maddening.
  8. I sort of like the idea, but I think it should be an "open" division. That is, take the largest two dozen schools with the biggest enrollment disparities from the rest of the division, but also allow some of the other smaller powers the chance to "play up." Under the new format, I think some traditional powers like Massillon will not be in the big school division.
  9. My biggest complaint about this draft is not grabbing Stephen Hill (or even Reuben Randle) with the 37th pick and grabbing Schwartz with the 67th. Even if Schwartz were gone by then, I have a hard time believing that there wasn't another tackle to be had.
  10. Here's a fun little data source I found, basically shows a number of urban inner city school districts receiving much much more funding per pupil than other suburban or rural districts. East Cleveland in the Top Ten. Shaker Heights & Cleveland Heights right near the top also. Cleveland Municipal schools in the top 20, spending over $15k per pupil. Districts at the bottom spending less than half as much per pupil.... http://stateimpact.npr.org/ohio/2012/01/17/see-how-much-each-ohio-school-district-spends-per-student/ I wouldn't call SH urban and I'd even hesitate to put CH-UH in that category either (even though the actual student body in the latter comes very close to fitting the bill). Ultimately I think if a plan like yours is put into place, we're much more likely to see a race to the bottom in terms of teachers' compensation (and classroom conditions), especially in regards to median salaries. I don't think this is in the best interest of public education on a larger scale.
  11. The BottleHouse in Cleveland Heights finally opens next week...can't wait to try some of their brews! http://thebottlehousebrewingcompany.com/
  12. I could have sworn that they renovated the science building recently, but maybe I am actually just thinking of that connector that was created in 2003. Wow that doesn't seem that long ago, but according to my math that's nine years...time is flying!
  13. No, as I've said numerous times, I rarely parked there. My "axe to grind" is with this administration who is making questionable decisions and turning its back on its current customer base in hopes of appealing to some imaginary future customer base in some imaginary future version of the City of Cleveland. These types of issues with the development which seem to be arising every few months, only validate those concerns. Not that my view on the larger issues of CSU expansion has anything to do with the way the developer (and by extension, CSU) is slapping the community in the face with its employment practices. Dr. Schwartz said that? Talk about out of touch and disrespectful to the people who were paying his salary. I still don't understand how this line of discussion isn't considered "on-topic." But regardless, it appears that it was actually a moderator who sent it off-topic with his comments changing the subject and making it personal.
  14. This. Though I think Pena will be putting up big numbers all year and I really wish they would have landed him--he would have made a significant difference for the club. Supposedly they did actually offer him more than the Rays did but he just wanted to play in Tampa. Oh well...
  15. A little off-topic, but if you want to see something really cool, check out Hessler Court (next to Hessler Road, which is a brick road) basically on the campus of CWRU. I've driven on it a few times in recent years (mostly at night I guess) and always just thought it was brick without looking too closely at it, but a week or so back when I got out of my car and walked on it I realized that it was wood block! And it's still in pretty decent shape, too. Any other wood block streets in Greater Cleveland?
  16. What can EC do to really attract new residents to the city and make them feel comfortable/safe without displacing or slapping its current residents in the face?
  17. Not an exactly awe-inspiring move, but he will bring some help to the lineup, almost to the extent that Abreu would have, but at a fraction of the price.

I wasn't being serious with that comment. I was being sarcastic shedding light on the Tribe's terrible attendance and the arguably minor league quality product they've been known to put on the field in recent years.
  19. CSU also got a transfer from Penn State, a young man that I believe played high school ball at Garfield Heights. His name escapes me at the moment.

I tend to agree with the idea that it's a pipe dream to think that this will spark other investment in that area. I just want to see this happen because I want to see a piece of Cleveland's baseball history preserved.
  21. I got that letter as well. Sounds like the University is trying to have its cake and eat it too. Why the need to play the role of landlord? If you're going to do that then take some responsibility for the slimy behavior of the developers you brought on board for the project. Otherwise just outright sell the land and wipe your hands clean. Vacancy for what exactly?

I got a laugh out of that too. Lots of Choo jerseys as well. I agree it would be cool if the Tribe played a regular season game or two there. This park apparently would have the capacity to host such a game too.
  23. Ohio State will be very competitive once again next year with Thomas returning. However the Big Ten as a whole is going to be absolutely loaded.
  24. Is it really "high-demand" if taxpayer funds need to be used to build it? Berkman and CSU leadership seem to be trying to create demand where it currently does not exist. We see how well that's worked out for Wolstein Center.
  25. The casino is hoping to address it by constructing a skywalk Really? The proposed sky-walk on the on the prospect side will do what exactly? Hypothetically speaking, if people are coming from, say, city hall, to the Casino, do you really think they would walk passed the PS entrances, to Prospect, to enter the Casino? Or is this sarcasm? I'm sensing sarcasm. I laughed, anyways.
