Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
For every gun used in a violent crime, there has to be an irresponsible ex-owner, right?

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
I remember during the late 1990s when it seemed like there was a rash of school shootings. I thought that had ended...hopefully everyone here is alright.

Marcellus / Utica Natural Gas & Fracking
I'm still very concerned with out-of-state interests controlling this process. I understand that for now that's the way it has to be, but hopefully at some point in the nearer future there are Ohio companies running the show and keeping more of that money in state. Also, looking at the map, this shale seems to be quite large and covering almost a dozen states. Why is eastern Ohio the "epicenter," so to speak?

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
While it means nothing because there was no defense played, Kyrie Irving put on a show tonight at the Rookie-Sophomore game, scoring 34 points and taking MVP honors. Also, here's an interesting piece on Irving growing up and the role his father played: http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/page/kyrieirving_120224/nba-father-laid-plan-kyrie-irving-followed-it Go Cavs!

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
Again, KSU is a bad example because it's a residential university (and in a rural town, no less). Not much came out of the forum except a lowering of cost to park at the South Garage (which doesn't help much because it's so unattractive to commuters) and a shuttle which I've yet to see anywhere on campus. As I've said numerous times, I already park in the South Garage. I fully understand that nothing will change with current projects as construction of Berkman's Folly North is already underway. However the goal is to make CSU administrators think twice in the future before pushing forward with more of these misguided, character-redefining projects. Also, where is the CSU general news and info thread?

More on the parking issue (which isn't going away, despite attempts to sweep it under the rug): http://www.csuohio.edu/class/com/clevelandstater/Copy/130901.html http://www.csucauldron.com/news/this-lot-full-1.2779820#.T0fnA3ns5cF http://www.csucauldron.com/news/sga-and-city-council-talk-parking-1.2756841#.T0fnBHns5cF And an SGA poll on the topic, with comments below (some hilarious): http://csusga.com/parking-lot-survey/ What's clear here is that despite the tiny minority of students that attend CSU and also happen to be urban enthusiasts supporting this massive shift in University policy, a much larger chunk of the student body and faculty is really peeved over this issue. More and more folks are seeing the University as slapping their current customer base in the face in hopes of making the school attractive to some hypothetical future customer.

Cleveland: University Circle: Centric Development (formerly Intesa)
Can someone help me visualize where this is? I think I have an idea, but I'm not certain... Thanks!

Cleveland Heights-South Euclid: Oakwood Commons
Another other interesting aspect of all of this is that First Interstate also owns the Cleveland Heights portion of Oakwood, too. He had originally planned to put in some high-density senior housing and some light retail as well, I believe. All of this requires them to get a change in the zoning from the city, because the land is currently zoned large lot residential only. You can bet that there are going to be some very angry residents (and potentially city leaders as well) that, rightly or wrongly, see First Interstate as a villain that stole dozens of jobs from the city. Those are going to be some very entertaining city council meetings with Schneider and company trying to explain why they should get the zoning change after their actions in securing Wal-Mart for the South Euclid portion. Get ya popcorn ready!

Cleveland Heights-South Euclid: Oakwood Commons
It's my understanding that you're also not technically supposed to change zoning either unless there is pressing public interest in doing so. I'm not an expert on this, however. Ultimately what we have here (and I'll freely admit plagiarizing this statement from someone else, but I think it's spot on) is Schneider's company acting as a Trojan horse to get Wal-Mart onto that land, which is debatably in public interest. What kind of tax breaks was Wal-Mart seeing while located at Severance? My big worry here is that while Schneider said he would not seek a TIF for the Oakwood property, if that property is sold to Wal-Mart, who knows what might happen with TIF requests? CH-UH is already losing millions in potential revenue from the TIF that was created for Cedar Center North. Technically the school district agreed to that TIF, but they didn't have much choice because of the nature of the program, and they won't have much choice on a TIF for Oakwood, either. I see this as a big opportunity for CH to finally get it right with Severance. I hate to say it, but a lot of that area just feels really dumpy and underutilized and with Wal-Mart gone, they can make some significant changes for the better. Green City Blue Lake has an idea: http://www.gcbl.org/blog/marc-lefkowitz/turning-50s-mall-town-look-sprawl-repair-prototypes

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Basketball Discussion
When Buford does well, the Bucks do well. Unfortunately he disappears every few games--usually against the better opponents. He needs to become more consistent if they're going to win the Big Ten and make a run in the tournament.
-
Cleveland Heights-South Euclid: Oakwood Commons
Man, you must be talking about a battle that occurred in the mid-1990s which is well before my memory--one that I wish the residents had one. Regardless, CH is going to have a big problem on their hands once Wal-Mart is gone... Or perhaps a big opportunity. Folks with foresight leading the city should probably start thinking of some future plans for Severance that are far less retail-oriented. I've heard that in a lot of Wal-Mart locations, Wal-Mart actually owns the land and after relocating has been known to sit on the property, leaving it decaying and vacant, so that nothing else can be put in to compete with them.

The "Apple Macintosh" Discussion Thread
If you think non-Apple electronics products aren't also produced in slave-labor factories, I've got a bridge to sell you. Many of them are produced in the exact same factories as Apple products, but of course, it's fashionable to single out Apple while ignoring every other company that employs the same labor practices. Obviously I'm not naive enough to believe that it's only Apple using cheap Chinese labor, but that's not really the point. The point is that Apple charges enough for these products that they should and could be made of higher quality materials and with better conditions for workers, as Apple would lead you to believe is the case. Say nothing of the progressive-minded nature of a chunk of Apple's costumer base that should feel especially betrayed by these revelations. In summation, Apple is different here because of the nature of the company and the people that keep it in business.

Maybe I missed it, but does anyone know what's being built in the parking lot behind the Rascal House/Qdoba retail strip, between Cornell and Mayfield?

Cleveland Heights-South Euclid: Oakwood Commons
Someone let the cat out of the bag. Earlier this morning a "brochure" from Goodman Real Estate Services Group (who will be managing Oakwood) showed that part of the Oakwood development will indeed be dedicated to a brand, spankin' new Wal-Mart. Whether or not it's going to be of the "SuperCenter" variety is unclear and mostly moot IMO. What many of us had feared all along seems to be reality. I'm kind of at a loss for words, but it's incredibly disappointing to think that South Euclid's city leaders think that this anti-progressive development makes any kind of sense. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151327907745010&set=a.10151327906810010.832052.464683890009&type=1&theater

I don't think DC is a great example because they're always rolling in Federal money.

ODOT Policy Discussion
This isn't a surprise: http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2012/02/20/donor-state.html But it is frustrating. As I've surmised before, I bet county-by-county numbers for state funding would look similar with Cuyahoga coming out woefully underfunded compared to what we throw into the pot.

Kaptur vs Kucinich
Yeah they did officially endorse her a week or two back.

Beachwood: New Eaton Headquarters
Chagrin-Richmond is a mess during rush hour. I think it's smart that they're building a road that will hopefully encourage some of that traffic to migrate down to the Harvard Road 271 access point.

The "Apple Macintosh" Discussion Thread
I disagree. Apple has amazing marketing flow penetration! the ipad isn't the best tablet out, but it was first to market and has the best marketing. But isn't that the story of Apple? So-so products with great marketing? All they have to do is stick that logo on something and people will buy it. It's pretty sad considering the margins the company must be seeing yet the incredibly shameful state of their slave-labor factories in China.

Ohio "Right-to-Work" Movement
Is it really unfounded? If it were, than what's the point? This whole thing is about lowering wages and benefits and undermining the power the employees have. I think this is a generalization that is sometimes true, though not always anymore depending on specific locales. I do see your point, however.
-
Ohio "Right-to-Work" Movement
I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to the "right-to-work" amendment, but I do have an issue with the freeloader problem that Hts121 mentioned above. Basically the 50 states are racing each other to the bottom, with many Southern states off to a fast start. This is not a good thing in a country where corporations already have wrestled away far too much control from citizens/employees.

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
Beachwood and regionalism? Doubtful. That city as much as any in Northeast Ohio is only looking out for #1. All of its neighbors should install tolls on all of the roads into and out of the city.

Kaptur vs Kucinich
It looks to me like a decent chunk of Cleveland/suburbs is still in Kucinich's district.

Ohio "Right-to-Work" Movement
Polling data out that shows 54% of Ohioans would support making Ohio a right-to-work state. Referendum on the November ballot a strong possibility. http://cincinnati.com/blogs/politics/2012/02/14/poll-ohioans-support-right-to-work/

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Basketball Discussion
That loss was incredibly deflating. Just when I was starting to feel good about this team they have a terrible week. I still think their ceiling, barring an absolute perfect bracket draw, is the Elite Eight. I just don't see this team having the horses to go to the Final Four, let alone all the way.
